13:44 the platforming in these game actually makes you feel like you've accomplished something. The precise angling, the different types of jumps, the lag time between the button press and jump, the way you have to build momentum for certain jumps-there's a lot of gameplay depth; it forces the player to be really precise and deliberate with their movements, and it makes a lot of the more complicated jumps really nerve wracking and rewarding. Modern platformers trade depth for fluidity by automating it-the player is magentized to ledges and only needs to point in the direction they want to jump.

7:43 "Have an updated version of those versions with *better* controls" lol you have no idea what you're talking about [EDIT] And after seeing him miss easy jumps on TR2 and TR3, it just proves my comment.
Looks like the modern controls are going to cause issues with new comers who don’t know that these games jumps have a certain momentum system, and that’s evident by the guy playing the game. You can’t just stand in place and jump, sometimes you have to make a running jump. It’s very strategic platforming, which is why the tank controls are sooo important. The modern controls remove that and thus you end up trying to play the game as if you’re playing TR2013 or uncharted.
Exactly. Modern controls seem way easier to move around but I don't know if they allow you to do the little hop back to be able to do the running jump. If not, then modern controls are not adapted to the game.
I was thinking the same thing. One full square of space required for a long running jump is gonna be way easier to set-up with tank controls than it is any modern equivalent. It was frustrating watching a newcomer play this who clearly didn’t know the optimum positioning and momentum required for jumps.
I’m 30 years old and I remember trying so hard to play these games but it was too scary and the controls were too hard. I can’t wait to play these again with modern controls, though the statues coming alive in tomb raider 3 are still a deeply scary thing for me hahah. For tomb raider 2 the only thing I remember is fighting a dragon, I’m glad that my memory was somewhat accurate. I remember also fighting the tiger and it was a total butt clencher. I hope they remake tomb raider 4 because ancient Egypt is my favorite.
The modern controls does something interesting to the combat. The initial point was that Lara controls like a Tank but in combat you have to keep moving so you use her front, back and forward jumps and flips to reposition her and keep enemies in her line of sight. Gives you the feeling of being a flipping femme fatale, she's basically supposed to be Black Widow or a Matrix character as an archeologist. But with modern controls there seems to be no need to jump around too much cause you can run around in circles or just stand in place and turn the camera.
Dont press up+jump at the same time. Its better press JUMP and immediately up! This way you’ll never fail. I finished all 3 games but never played the expansions. Im so happy to play this tomorrow night!!
I recall playing TR 1 and 3 back on the original playstation when they were brand new. Man I missed those games, they were so difficult but fun back then. In fact, every time I hear the original sony playstation boot up noise... it's a 2 part thing. you get the sony heavy bass tone, and then the Playstation shimmering tone.... and my brain is forever hardwire to then hear the TR1 intro theme because it would start right after the PS tone. God I miss these games. What a time.
So, you dislike the original controls but struggle to do jumps with modern! Proves it was never the control method just a gamer ability to be patient and learn her moves.
8:09 Yeah but you don't mind gunning down people without batting an eye...This is a very strange mentality you youtubers and streamers have adopted over the years. I personally can't get with it, because I believe that anything that is constantly trying to kill you- human and animal- is all fair game to defend yourself with lethal force in games.
AGREED! God I hate this. These animals are literally trying to kill her. What do they want her to do? Let them have their way and not fight back? It annoys me in the same way that people call Nathan Drake from Uncharted a "mass murderer" because of all the people he kills in the games. Except they're forgetting one thing... they're all TRYING TO KILL HIM and he's defending himself the entire time. These people are morons.
What did Uncharted take from Tomb Raider other than a framework already established by Indiana Jones? Uncharted is a narrative heavy 3rd person shooter, while the original Tomb Raider was a Teversal game with heavy emphasis on exploration. Their design philosophies were completely different too with Uncharted being very linear and handholdy while TR was remarkably hands off.
When Tomb Raider came out, I was in awe of the scope. After beating the Greek portion, I thought it was over, but it wasn't even half of it! Uncharted took the Indiana Jones formula, but still felt like its own thing. All good stuff in my opinion!
@@IsidorTheNordicGuy Tomb Raider took from the original Prince of Persia. All games take something from other games that came before and it never was a problem. Uncharted took from Indinia Jones, which was inspired from archeology movies from the fifties that were inspired from real stories and fiction in litterature. OK, it's not like I'm teaching anobody anything!
I will always remember when back in 2004 I was playing TR2 gold, and my friends loved watching my complete the abandoned zoo part of the game and to a person they were jealous they never got into computers. This was my 4th build at the time, thanks to Tiger Direct!
I think I remember the monkeys will hurt if you shoot. It's been a while since I finish this game several years ago. For the zipline, you have to lock walking so you wont fall on the ledge and press action. Seems they add an exclamation mark indicator now. Tank control seems to be still best fit with the fixed camera.
I only played the Square Enix trilogy. My favorite was by far Shadow of the Tomb Raider, despite the stupid plot. I played on the hardest difficulty, had to try some dungeons multiple times and the puzzles were cool.
"oh no i have to shoot wolves that are trying to eat me, I dont like hunting, Oh how could they put a picture of an attractive character on my demo disks...." FFS
These games are what Tomb Raider is all about. The games that made Lara a house hold name. I have my opinions on the reboots but they didn't do justice to Lara of these games.
Really excited to replay these. Put in so much time as a kid and I'm looking forward to seeing what they updated. And yeah, TR 2013 rules. It just looked like an Uncharted-like, so I had no idea it was a Metroidvania.
This game is the anti yellow paint, good old times when people actually played games to explore and have fun, not to just hold the stick foward and wait for the next shiny cutscene.
oh, and the sound file for that gate opening was on the net for like 20+ movies including the gate in the movie RONIN with Robert Dinero, HOW DO I REMEMBER SUCH TRIVIAL JUNK?
I had to return to leave a comment. Saw this in the morning and had SO much fun watching. Believe me, we all been through that struggle with the jumps! Even after knowing how it works, it's still complicated sometimes. And oh, falling by accident sometimes means death, you'll know that a lot.
Biggest issue with the modern controls is that they take away the side and backwards jumping. Making that first timed door incredibly infuriating to deal with. They also make precise jumps way harder, which really drives the point of the tank controls home even harder. It's a grid based game.
the reason I got a PC back in 1998 was because the PS1 controller SUX for this type of game, my E-machine ran TR games for 5 years almost every day. but the tradeoff was me crossing arms on the keyboard to play, but after a few days I got used to it and when I got to TR3 I was like a god, especially when I came to Cleopatra's palace.
I can’t explain how nostalgic and happy this remaster collection makes me feel. It’s done perfectly & the price for all 3 games plus DLC (£22.49 🇬🇧) is a bargain! I feel like I’m 10 again and it’s a Sunday before school on the PS1 ❤ FINALLY A REMASTER DONE RIGHT!
And also every non living thing too..rolling boulders and wheels..spike walls and holes..deadly arrows..fire traps..late 90's fun..gotta replay the PSX blocky games..
Tomb Raider 1 & 2 are classics for sure, but Tomb Raider 3 feels like a jumbled mess, you could tell the devs were getting fed up making Tomb Raider games at this point & they took it out on the gamers with these incredibly tedious & confusing rat in a maze levels. Every path started to look the same, lol.
It's odd cos I remember reading one of the reasons she was named Lara (instead of Laura Cruz like she was early in dev) was to make it easier for Americans to pronounce cos Laura is less common over there but plenty of girls getting names Kara or Sara. Yet it feels like half of American gamers default back to Laura which is an amusing backfire
I played the original TR2 when it came out. These remasters kooj absolutely incredible and have been so loyal to the originals which is what i wanted because those originals are where my memories lie. I cannot wait to dig into these remasters on my Xbox
I'm so happy with the way they approached and executed this remaster. This is the way it should be done for PS1 era games. Crash Bandicoot and Medievil were given similar justice so it's fitting that we got a true to the blueprints remaster of Tomb Raider as well.
If you stick with the old controls, you get used to it. I started playing the PS1 version a year or two ago, took a bit to feel comfortable, but got it. Remasters look amazing
Uncharted - Just played Lost Legacy over the weekend on PS5. Don't sleep on it! It's easily the most visually impressive and has a neat sandbox to play in. Paced the strongest in the series as well!
Doesn't come out here in the UK for 2 more days! This is how I remember the originals 😂 even though PS1 game graphics are shockingly worse than I recall lol.
Do not kill the monkeys 😭. I was screaming a lot during this reaction. Am a tomb raider fan from the first game i played back then in 1996/97. Never had any problems with the controls on pc, Playstation and later on the steamdeck. These first 3 games are probably my all time favorite games. Love they did the remasters. Go to play them probably for the 11th time but on the steamdeck now. Thanks for this reaction.
I really wish a Dead Space/ Resident Evil 4 style remake but if this game can trigger that hope I'm happy with my purchase. It's my first 3d game I played and it was really scary. Just having modern character controller would be amazing but it seems one to one same game with HD texture pack.

Gonna be fun playing this again, my favorite game in 1996...played it on a 100 mhz pentium 1, remember running it in DOS because I got marginally better framerate there than in win95 xD
I remembered playing all 3 on my ps1 and this remaster brings me joy cause this game brought back great memories especially that i finished all 3 so I will play em again for good ole times sake.
They've overdone the darkness in parts making it almost impossible to see. Guess I'll be switching back to old mode in those parts to see where I'm going.
Oh hands down the Tomb Raider reboot trilogy has a far better combat loop than the Uncharted games, I couldn’t get into Uncharted at all no matter how hard I tried. The combat in Uncharted is just super tedious.
oh man I can't get that bundist temple out of my head from TR2, I was burning Nag Champa the whole time I played that LVL, awesome LVL, also they used it in a scene from the first movie when Danel Craig says "STOLE YOUR PRAYER WHEEL"?
Remakes are a diffent beast, but such REMASTERS are the way to go! This is awesome way to preserve the classics, modernize the controls, but still keep super close to the originals and how we remember them
LOVE that its a straight up freaking port with a right stick camera control! man i played this on a Gateway PC and man you know controlling her was almost like driving a car.
To be fair the franchise is borderline 30 years old at this point, nostalgia is holding you back from realising how long its been, I was like 8 years old when I got tomb raider and a ps1 for Christmas, boy I'm in my 30s now😂 I'm basically a grandpa, where as when this first released I was pretty much a baby still 😂
yeah well for you gen zs you missed out big time. so now you will play it probably enjoy it, but many games have gotten better so maybe you wont get the buzz of it. PS1 was the best ever and iv played gow3 on ps3 . the original god of war on ps2 was great though.
It was perfectly fine back then, but today I could never play something that looks and moves like this. I very much hoped for it to be brought on par with the new trilogy at least from a technical point of view, I would have bought it on D1.
Totally agree with the Tomb Raider reboot being better, for me, than Uncharted. Got much more enjoyment out of the new Tomb Raider trilogy, and I'd much rather replay those over Uncharted as well.

Uncharted took ideas from tomb raider Legend, not the classics!
Was that true of the 2013 reboot? I heard that was linear like Uncharted.
@@Volt35the reboot is a knock off of uncharted for sure. Tomb raider lost its identity with crystal dynamics imo.
Her name is lara not laura
Proper annoying when people make that mistake and next to another person pronouncing it correctly so like hes doing it by choice
I only played the Square Enix trilogy. My favorite was by far Shadow of the Tomb Raider, despite the stupid plot. I played on the hardest difficulty, had to try some dungeons multiple times and the puzzles were cool.
21:12
It's almost like you should leave the tank controls on.
"oh no i have to shoot wolves that are trying to eat me, I dont like hunting, Oh how could they put a picture of an attractive character on my demo disks...." FFS
That part p me off like seperate reality from video game seriously
This game is great, however the guy's playing in the video suck
These games are what Tomb Raider is all about. The games that made Lara a house hold name. I have my opinions on the reboots but they didn't do justice to Lara of these games.
You're absolutely correct
Really excited to replay these. Put in so much time as a kid and I'm looking forward to seeing what they updated.
And yeah, TR 2013 rules. It just looked like an Uncharted-like, so I had no idea it was a Metroidvania.
😒
I haven't played these since my windows 95 computer back in 2003 I'm so excited to run thru them again
This game is the anti yellow paint, good old times when people actually played games to explore and have fun, not to just hold the stick foward and wait for the next shiny cutscene.
Good point
Can you have original graphics but 60+ fps?
The more footage I watch, the more it's obvious that og graphics are only 30 fps. What a shame
Amazing. It's taken 26 years for computer processing to be powerful enough to make Lara curvy.
"One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind" LUL
Lara was already curvy in the PS2 first reboot trilogy (Legends, Anniversary, Underworld)
oh, and the sound file for that gate opening was on the net for like 20+ movies including the gate in the movie RONIN with Robert Dinero, HOW DO I REMEMBER SUCH TRIVIAL JUNK?
Agreed that the Halo 2 remaster was amazing
I had to return to leave a comment. Saw this in the morning and had SO much fun watching. Believe me, we all been through that struggle with the jumps!
Even after knowing how it works, it's still complicated sometimes. And oh, falling by accident sometimes means death, you'll know that a lot.
Biggest issue with the modern controls is that they take away the side and backwards jumping. Making that first timed door incredibly infuriating to deal with.
They also make precise jumps way harder, which really drives the point of the tank controls home even harder. It's a grid based game.
I have these original tombraider games on disc 📀. Also the strategy guides as well. Looking forward to playing this remastered versions
don't you guys have at least one person who knows a little bit more about Tomb Raider...?
the reason I got a PC back in 1998 was because the PS1 controller SUX for this type of game, my E-machine ran TR games for 5 years almost every day. but the tradeoff was me crossing arms on the keyboard to play, but after a few days I got used to it and when I got to TR3 I was like a god, especially when I came to Cleopatra's palace.
Every living thing in these early Tomb Raider games was programmed to try to kill you.
Except for the monkeys in TRIII, they actually led you to things! Everything else tried to kill you though lol.
@@melindamercier6811 Creepy as a MF
And also every non living thing too..rolling boulders and wheels..spike walls and holes..deadly arrows..fire traps..late 90's fun..gotta replay the PSX blocky games..
@@markianclark9645 Tomb Raider was a dangerous game 😂😂
I wish Nightmare Creatures 1 e 2 to have that same treatment.
Every path started to look the same, lol.
...and please, it's Lara, not Laura! Thank you, Kyle.
Yeah I am totally sold! So many good memories with this game as a kid and can't wait to revisit them with new controls etc.
Man that Modern Controls option is such a good addition. This is how games should be remastered
I’m going to lock the butler in the fridge on tomb raider 2 when it comes out in the uk midnight tonight lol
Its funny when you think now how bright it was in the cave on the original hahaha.
that intro cutscene always reminds me of the beginning of the movie "THE DAY AFTER TOMMAROW"
Are we really at the point of being upset by killing virtual tigers and wolves? Id assume it was a joke but their reaction seems genuine.
When you showed you can just swap to the old game models with the push of a button my mind exploded. Instantly preordering this now lol. SOLD
No we don't want a remake. It'd be woke
@@iPhone-su8li can it get more woke than almost naked Lara lol
Tomb Raider Anniversary is what you're looking for.
@@LN.2233 anniversary was a different game with weird combat and totally different level design imo. RE4 remake style whole series would be amazing from 1 to Chronicles.
I can finally experience the badass lara instead of whatever we got with square enix
Square Enix Lara was great
17:44 : Did I see the ground textures flickering? And again at 18:17 ? And again at 19:07 ( above the opening door ) ? In addition to the mud no longer moving as you pointed out... Could the game be bugged?
I think it's the lightning (it's raining)
@@thesupremestreams6005 No, the weather has nothing to do with it; those are texture bugs. By setting the video playback speed to 0.25 and clicking on my timestamps, you can clearly see the textures flickering. I hope the trilogy isn't full of bugs like the GTA trilogy.
And one more time 20:31
I want a physical release for the shelf please!
You didn't really notice the pixels on a crt television back then
round boobs triangle boobs round boobs triangle boobs. that's what i'll be switching back and forth for at first LMAO
At least we can appreciate her bust. Unlike the reboot fans who complain
Gonna be fun playing this again, my favorite game in 1996...played it on a 100 mhz pentium 1, remember running it in DOS because I got marginally better framerate there than in win95 xD
1996 was a strong year in gaming: Quake, TR1, Resident Evil 1, Duke Nukem 3D, Super Mario 64. All in 1 year.
Man, I feels like grand PA 😅, the original tomb raider was mind blowing back then.
How come these two don't know a thing about classic tomb raider?
They err... they like the Uncharted clones that's why..😂
I remembered playing all 3 on my ps1 and this remaster brings me joy cause this game brought back great memories especially that i finished all 3 so I will play em again for good ole times sake.
This Remaster looks great. I may buy the games yet again...
N-64 Goldeneye had dual controller/stick settings.
How on earth do I get on the rope on TR III in the jungle?
They've overdone the darkness in parts making it almost impossible to see. Guess I'll be switching back to old mode in those parts to see where I'm going.
Totally agree Kyle with the gameplay of TR2013 being more fun than Uncharted
Ehhhh.... I think Uncharted played better. The fact that 2013 played like Uncharted is why I hated it
Oh hands down the Tomb Raider reboot trilogy has a far better combat loop than the Uncharted games, I couldn’t get into Uncharted at all no matter how hard I tried. The combat in Uncharted is just super tedious.
9:12 SAME!!
oh man I can't get that bundist temple out of my head from TR2, I was burning Nag Champa the whole time I played that LVL, awesome LVL, also they used it in a scene from the first movie when Danel Craig says "STOLE YOUR PRAYER WHEEL"?
Remakes are a diffent beast, but such REMASTERS are the way to go! This is awesome way to preserve the classics, modernize the controls, but still keep super close to the originals and how we remember them
LOVE that its a straight up freaking port with a right stick camera control! man i played this on a Gateway PC and man you know controlling her was almost like driving a car.
How young are these guys if they haven't played the original Tomb Raider games.
This is what I was thinking. Wouldn’t they be better to get someone that played the original games to talk about
To be fair the franchise is borderline 30 years old at this point, nostalgia is holding you back from realising how long its been, I was like 8 years old when I got tomb raider and a ps1 for Christmas, boy I'm in my 30s now😂 I'm basically a grandpa, where as when this first released I was pretty much a baby still 😂
yeah well for you gen zs you missed out big time. so now you will play it probably enjoy it, but many games have gotten better so maybe you wont get the buzz of it. PS1 was the best ever and iv played gow3 on ps3 . the original god of war on ps2 was great though.
Can choose the controls?? 😍😍
It was perfectly fine back then, but today I could never play something that looks and moves like this. I very much hoped for it to be brought on par with the new trilogy at least from a technical point of view, I would have bought it on D1.
Oh my god, you can actually see the items on the ground and what you actually picked up in TR3 now! Nice QoL change right there!
Original TR3 was brutal haha
This was excruciating to watch!
video was pretty cringe.
Waiting for this comment
Then it's clear you and "hammersticks7138" are reboot fans. Go play your Uncharted clone while us legitimate fans enjoy *real* Tomb Raider
@@iPhone-su8liI assumed they meant how bad they were at the basic controls!?
Can we get a remaster for Godhand, Original Resident Evil 1-3, Psyops, Spyhunter 1,2, Dino Crisis 2, Mercenaries 1.
*THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT SHE THE GOAT, THE GOAT!*
An absolute relic of the past.
Totally agree with the Tomb Raider reboot being better, for me, than Uncharted. Got much more enjoyment out of the new Tomb Raider trilogy, and I'd much rather replay those over Uncharted as well.
