  • I did it, I finally got a pet spider. I've not been a fan of inverts but my good friend Dayyan at ‪@Reptiliatus‬ gifted me a beautiful jumping spider and ‪@tarantulacribs‬ hooked me up with a great enclosure so, it's time to get over my fear.

Jumping spiders are THE best way to get over arachnophobia - they're adorable, personal, and smart. The enclosure is great, they don't need more than a spritz a week, and generally they just hang out. I do find mine enjoy being in a busy area as they like to watch going-ons outside of their enclosure. For handling, I also have a little paint brush handy to gently encourage them to move if need be.

Had violent arachnophobia growing up. Had a jumping spider protect one of my plants for a bit and once they left I felt kinda bummed out. I now have 6 tarantulas, 4 scorpions, a vinegaroon, and a jumping spider. Recently got a Gigantometrus swammerdami (BE JEALOUS YALL) as well as have a Lasiodora that will both reach almost 11 inches. Hey you did what I did! I moved out of my dad’s recently and realized a few years ago I had to prepare to deal with spiders in my house on my own, so I prepared two years ago by getting a grammostola pulchripes tarantula-calm terrestrial, mostly likes to shovel dirt and eat worms, to learn about them and get desensitized. But I learned through having her that they’re just as interesting to watch as my reptiles, so now I also have a davus sp. panama and a pumpkin patch. My favorite is the Venezuelan sun tiger based on color, but I need a bit more time to prep for faster ones.
But I didn’t get used to spiders in a way that makes it more comfortable to kill the ones in my house, instead I now cup them and take them out. Having tarantulas made me good at it!

I love how the jumpers are helping people overcome their Arachnophobia. You'd be amazed how intelligent they are and there's been documentation how they have the ability to recognize their caretakers as they have superb eyesight, unlike the tarantulas, that communicate through vibration and movement. I know its a different experience for everyone when they first interact with spiders, but the more we're educated and learn more about them, the more people becoming accepting of them. I know I was weary of spiders at first myself, but I've been bitten by hamsters more in my lifetime! I'm glad you're thinking of showing off more arachnid stuff now that you have a little jumper to look after! I'm honestly nervous to handle amphibians.

As an arachnid owner (mainly tarantulas but others too) I'm super proud of you!! It takes a lot to overcome a phobia and part of that is confronting the fear and learning about how interesting they are. Fear can turn into curiosity then appreciation then fascination. I'm also someone who had an irrational fear of spiders. The only way that I got over it way by interacting with them. I would force myself to get as close as possible in the wild, then I would start catching them in the house to take outside (using a cup or jar), eventually I got comfortable enough that I will just scoop them up with my hand and take them out.
My first pet spider (and every subsequent spider pet) was also a jumping spider like the one you've got there. I currently have a small male. Probably one molt away from being an adult.
Thanks for sharing this experience, I'd love to see more arachnid/insect content on your channel in the future.

This is the exact route I took to get over my serious arachnophobia. One jumping spider led to 4 jumping spiders, then a tarantula, then 19 more tarantulas. Turns out they are pretty fascinating critters! I wouldn't say I'm completely over my fear but I am definitely a lot more comfortable around them and will now happily leave them be in my house or relocate them outside instead of killing them. Good luck with your new spider!

Jumping spiders are probably the best spider to start with. They tend to be really pretty, really docile and avoidant of your movements. They are the spiders I am least afraid of and that is pretty typical for people with arachnophobia as well.
I would highly recommend looking into Travis McEnery on YT, he has a great channel that takes deep dives into individual spider species. He has helped me face my arachnophobia a lot. It's still there but I don't have the irrational kill response like I used to and only the occasional jump scare is what usually gets me. I still don't have a pet spider but it's really common for people to get a pet spider in order to conquer their arachnophobia.

I've had to learn as much as I can about spiders to be less afraid of them. I can finally muster the courage to get them in a cup and outside if they're in my space or a high-traffic area. I used to completely freak out with only the knowledge a spider was in my room, even if I didn't see it. Severe anxiety, uncontrollable bawling, the whole 9 yards. Learning about jumping spiders started it. They're extremely intelligent for a spider species. They really are interesting little creatures.

For your 1st T, I recommend a P. miranda. They are decent size, not terribly skittish, and soo freakin beautiful. Plus, they are not the "ball python" of T's. Not everyone's cousin Sally has one. And while I can't speak for all of them, I can tell you that mine is not really a strong hider. She actually stays visible, as long as it's not ridiculously bright in the room. If that is too spicy, I would try GBB. Still decent in size, amazing colors, and they are cool to watch when they web up their enclosures. Kudos to you for holding the bugger. I have never been interested in holding any of mine, and it would be unwise with several OW species.

I was scared of spiders at first and then I got a jumping spider. I did not handle it but I have handled a few that I find out in my yard or at the park.
It also got me interested in tarantulas and I got a Caribena versicolor. Again, I never handle it but it was awesome seeing it grow from a tiny spider to a large one. Rehoming makes me nervous, and the first time both the spider and I were freaked out about it, haha. But after some practice it has been smooth sailing and is a lot of fun seeing your spider use the decorations and design of their enclosure to build themselves a new home.

I got rid of my arachnophobia after decades on this planet and now I adore them. There isn't the One True Reason why people are arachnophobic, so there isn't an approach that works for everyone.
For me, it was the uncanny valley that my brain couldn't deal with. So, yes, the way they moved, it was just a blur and unpredictable, with no clue of how and what's going on, and what could happen next. One big step forward was to toss out the "haha, kill it with fire" attitude and being in reptile groups for a couple of years pretty much puts a stop to that (you can't just keep up that rude haha-behaviour if someone gushes over their pet spider with the same love you have for your reptile. You might not agree, but you keep your mouth shut, unless you are a stone.). But after that, I think the big spider puppet from the "Le réveil d'Astérion" (le gardien du temple) video pushed things forward. Even if obviously not 100% authentic, it was easy to follow the way the legs of the spider moved. It suddenly made more sense. The next step were tarantulas. The ZeFrank video came out and was interesting to listen to. Clint had a video, Snake Discovery, too, and I at least listened to it.
Then yt suggested the Tarantula Collective and Richard's amazing footage made it incredibly easy to see what's going on. And once my brain got a firm grasp on spider locomotion, the phobia went poof. Now I love spider content, and cohabit with local spiders if they happen to show up (only rule - stay away from my bed or be kicked out of the bedroom). My housemate used to save me from spiders, now I save the spiders from them. And there's so much stuff to learn about them, holy shit! Fascinating stuff! About spiders chasing laser pointers, or being able to see the stars (some of them), the varying degrees of intelligence, hunting methods, that two tarantulas mating looks like Thing's two hairy cousins having a bar fight...and my phobia had kept that away from me for so long.
Anyway, TL;DR: if the way they move freaks you out and your brain bluescreens, consider starting big, really big, and artificial.

I actually got massively over my fear of spiders by going to the Toronto Reptile Expo (easily ten years ago now) and my father made me a bet- Get a video of me holding a tarantula, and he’d give me $50 (and I was a college student in my second round of schooling. I needed every penny!).
I then met “Teddy”, the therapy tarantula (I miss when expos would actually let you hold animals at random from people’s tables… I discovered so many cool reptiles that way). He was so calm and chill and surprisingly soft and tickly. ❤ I still don’t want a tarantula (I WOULD like a jumping spider though!), but now I happily shoo all but the wolf spiders out of the house on my bare hands.

I recently took the same jump🥁 I found it was hard to keep one contained. They live around the house and can get away from the cats better, free range. I handle them without fear now, though, and they help control the insects I don't want.

Fear of snakes is why I got a pet snake, and I picked an adorable ball python with unique coloring. I can now hold snakes when previously the mere sight of them would have me screaming. Immersion therapy is the best! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻

Spiders are fun. If you decide later on to get something bigger try an Arizona blonde tarantula. Easy to keep and a good eater too. Good luck and another great video too

I think your ready for a Goliath birdeater. Lol. Good job, dude. My first arachnid was an emperor scorpion, and the first night I had it, I didn't sleep at all. But after that I was good to go.

I've kept two species of tarantula (Mexican Red-knee and Guyana Pink-toe) and three species of scorpion (African Emperor, Asian Forest and Desert Hairy) and I've never really handled any of them. Instead, I think of them as hands-off pets. Like fish, they're interesting to watch, but don't like being touched.

I was afraid of spiders, but I started watching Clint, and by extensions found a ton of reptile and arachnid youtubers, and so I decided that the fear was stupid and got 3 spiders within a month. Also just rescued someone small reptile collection consisting of a bearded dragon, blue tongue, and a viper boa. I am suddenly swimming in animals of all kinds and I blame Clint, you, and everyone else making great content that shows how much we misunderstand these guys. Thanks, lol.

I terrified of larger spiders and tarantulas. Oddly, I love jumping spiders and play with wild ones frequently. I watch Richard and Kat and a few others regularly to try to get out of my fear and I CAN watch them in videos now with no problem. For some reason true spiders still give me the heebie jeebies. I’ve been trying to talk myself into getting a grammostola pulchra but I’m not quite there yet. 😂

I didn't buy a jumper one found me I used to be petrified and I remember when Brian Barczyk started getting some for the repterium and did his getting over his fear of spiders videos and I not thinking I'd even consider one yet kinda brushed Off the thought and then years later after watching Brian get a few different tarantulas and knowing Brian of course he got the biggest and baddest one lol and I started doing research and with that I realized how epic they are and how many colors they come in as well as diff types n long story short i now have 7 tarantulas and some love to walk out onto me when i open up the enclosure and let me tell u years ago id have taken a sneaker to one if it ever came close enough

I've been a massive lover of spiders my whole life. Always thought they were amazing, fascinating and simply magical.
Paradoxically, I've also always been absolutely terrified of them.
It took me years to get over my fear, but what really helped was how much I loved learning about them; from observing the varied ways they use silk to searching for information on the enzymes in their venom. How alien they are is a big part of what I love about them.
I think it's really admirable to be trying to get over a phobia like this, and if anyone can do it, it's somebody who's as passionate about animals as you are.
Side note: definitely try handling wild species of spider before you move on to tarantulas. I doubt anyone needs to tell you this, but tarantulas are terribly frail (even the arboreal ones) and really are best as the kind of pet that you only take out if you absolutely HAVE to. Scorpions, on the other hand, are definitely some of my favourite arthropods and I love handling them. Still handle with care, but I think generally most scorpions are going to be less difficult to handle than tarantulas, too.

Let’s goooooo! I don’t know if my profile picture could make it any more obvious, but I like spiders a lot. I’m not saying that you’ll go down this path, but I’ve seen many stories of people who were afraid of spiders, bought one as a pet to fight their fear, and ended up loving them in the end. Just like snakes, they’re often misunderstood. I definitely recommend you get a juvenile tarantula at some point if you ever feel like you’re ready for it. Good luck with your new pet!

So proud of you for handing this spider! The top phobias for people are a fear of spiders and fear of snakes. Sometimes people have negative experiences with these animals but we don’t have to to feel afraid fear isn’t usually rational. But I’m also thinking about getting a jumping spider because I don’t have a fear of any spiders really as they are quite harmless and I think they are cute! Just not sure how I feel about feeling fly larvae I don’t want them to grow up and have a ton of flies 😅 I’m fine with other bugs though as I have a gecko.

I'm right there with you. The only thing that worried me about spiders, though, was being bitten. I've been watching all the major tarantula youtubers for years, and now that I know that's rare, I am very interested in all aspects of this hobby. I have a ton of native jumpers here in Northern Cali, but I just hang out outside and observe them. They're incredibly observing of their surroundings and interactive, but I don't want to take any out of the wild, so I just observe them whenever they're around and then they go about their business.

Jumpers are the way to go to get over your fear. They are the cutest little things. I spent 45 years terrified of spiders but now have2regals named Spinderella and Webster. I was trying to see the pedipalps, little boys look like they are wearing wee little boxing gloves and have a thinner abdomen. 1 person at a time will stop being so terrified of these little cuties and stop squashing them. Also scientific studies have shown jumping spiders dream and can recognize someone they have constant interactions with.

Good for you! Jumping spiders are pretty irresistible, and the more you learn about them, the more impressed you will be.
I think that, as with snakes, some people may have an inborn fear of spiders that has to be overcome. Our distant ancestors had good reason to fear snakes and spiders.
