Hi Pete, I bought a dustless blasting machine for my personal use as i have trucking business and i use it for my own stuff, i Also every now and then help a friend of mine that owns a body shop, i have done about 12 cars for him and i haven't warp any body panel, hood or trunk lid, i only blasted an interior of a car and science then i haven't done that as thats a very very big mess When you use the rust inhibitor right and if the vehicle is stored indoor it will not rust, i did a truck bed for my dad and it has been like that for 8 months now with 0 rust, and you are completely right about the crushed glass being exactly same as sand the only thing is that it doesn't have silica that's about it, you only have to have common sense, lowering pressure on hoods and trunks is what i do and has worked great for me, I watch all your videos pet, and i have learn a lot from you,. I did one of my dad's truck (body work and paint and it looks like a very expensive paint job) thanks to all your videos, I don't trust any shop to work on my cars, i wish you were closer so i can take some of my cars so you can do them for me, because i don't have much time to work on them, you are the only person i would trust to have one of my classics, Thank you pet
Hey Pete love your content, i am a sandblaster it all comes down to the operator. I use fine grade of garnet at low pressure, and do not directly blast the panels, you blast the panels at a 45 degree angle, learnt this from my father that was a blaster all his life, and never had warping doing it this way. Thanks From New Zealand 🇳🇿
Thanks Pete. I learned something new today. Did not know that acid dipping would thin the metal, also never considered the loss of factory coating in unreachable areas.
sand-glass bead-walnut shell...........35 years ago I learned how to sandblast and put a small weeble in a door. my boss chewed me a new one and made me fix it off the clock. In all of these years I have NEVER had an issue because I learned how to be careful. I still do all of the blasting at my shop so I know its done right. That's my 2 cents.......thanks Pete for another great video!

I built an 8-3/4 rear end. I rode my Bicycle last night throughout Covina CA. Hey I media Blasted the rear end housing with sand after completely covering with hard plastic and tough tape so NO particulates got inside! Por-15 works great! Yes Harbor Freight is my friend too!
Many years back I was prepping a work Van of mine a 1984 Dodge B250. Took my hand gun sand blaster and used Play Sand inside of it on panels that had rust on the side of the truck. It actually was warping the metal making a bigger mess to deal with. The metal body panels are just too thin to blast with cheap Play Sand. A painted bumper I saw no problem with using it because it was much thicker metal. Anyway sometimes you live and learn the hard way at times when you don’t know better. I wrote this about a 3rd into this Great Video kinda knowing what my friend Pete was driving at because of my own experience of not ever having any experience of doing any sandblasting before.
Agree with Pete. For my two cents.....Bead blasting should never be used on body work, parts maybe but not body' panels. Considering Soda blasting: Soda is the best for body panels! But I wonder if the original "soda blasting service" wasn't asking enough and that caused their failure? Concerning Acid dipping: Acid dipping without a 'base' (like soda / baking soda) wash and rinse to neutralize the acid is begging for trouble.
You are so right. I had a dustless blaster that was not very dustless but it worked good. Problem was no one would last for more than a day running it. Impossible to train people to do it right.
I also saw a video about a 68 Charger that had been dustless blasted. And afterwards they cut the quarterpanel and there was a lot of dirty remnants from blasting on the inside of the panel. I think I am gonna search some more info on soda blasting. First time I saw one of your videos. Lots of info, exactly what I was looking for. Thanks. 😎💪

Good video Pete. You are good when you are on fire. On the question of “dipping” you are wrong. The car is placed in a vat of warm caustic soda ( sodium hydroxide). The caustic removes only paint, filler and tars. The car is then placed in a tank of acid (hydrochloric acid) at a weak concentration. I would take it to a PROFESSIONAL Blaster and have him blast it with #4 sand which is fine grade, and done at low pressure.. THat old of a car you don't have to worry about warping...
Hey Pete, I have been a follow of you for 5 years. I have learned alot from you and you gave the inspiration to do the bodywork on my 1970 Chevy pickup. However, I am a Dustless Blasting owner/operator. I mainly do automotive. I don't recommend Dustless Blasting for automotive due to the mess and potential for rust if you don't get all of the media out. I don't use sand. I typically use recycled glass or nickel slag. I did a 1962 Mercedes for a body shop. I typically blast my cars at 60psi to 80psi. I find that 70psi is perfect. I invite you to check out Rockymtnecoblast on Facebook and you will see that I don't trash cars. I am a classic car owner .
I'm very sad that you left DFW, I live in Carrollton which is down the road from your old shop. I also have a spare hood for one of those (from a Euro car). These old W114 coupes will rust in the Sahara.
Warping happens from to HIGH PRESSURE !!! DrBlast in Texas is the best blaster I know ,he does low pressure20-30psi high volume 350cfm,plastic media . THE BEST He has videos on RUclips
That owners a moron...I had fully planned on having my car blasted and thank God came across your channel and you saved my project! Only had to tell me once to know that's a bad idea
Believe me i know. I am a professional gunsmith/rifle builder and 1000yd benchrest shooter but some of these idiot people want to listen to their friends who dont do what i do for a living instead of follow my recommendations. Then it ends up being a problem down the road and its my favorite thing to say "well i told you but you didn't want to listen to me when i am the guy who does it"
E Coat is the best stuff, Epoxy is the best we have in the aftermarket. I will sandblast door jambs but never complete cars too easy to screw up. Been around the business for 35 years have seen alot of BS sold for stripping paint good old -12 blast sand will do it.
I'm joking when I ask if I can bring an old rusty truck out for you to paint . it would make great content to see you Ghost ride it off a cliff around your new shop somewhere in the mountains .
I appreciate what you do- -you have great advice I used often- especially the Napa spray rust killer- I have to know-I love busting balls- tell me if back when you were 25 years old -tell me what would have happened to me I went up to you and told you you did everything the wrong way - what would have happened to me?...lol
My first Q, why don't you do the soda blasting yourself? You have the space, it's probably a messy job but if you set up for it then you can't complain about others screwing it up. I don't like blasting, it's messy, media can get in your eyes and mouth if you aren't careful and totally suited up, the media goes everywhere, then I worry about cleaning it all up and what about the crevices that don't get painted, the possible rust and rot you can't see...plus the pitting, warping, thinner metal- also, how will one do a better paint job than what the factory did? I prefer to keep things as original as possible, plus less paint & solvents, less toxic chemicals to deal with, less money to spend, I like the idea of "patina" vehicles and if such vehicle gets a repaint, much of the original paint and primer will still be there if it isn't all blasted away. I want to ask you what you know about Penetrol, they claim it can be used as a metal primer, so I've been experimenting with that. The Penetrol seems to work great for bringing old "patina" paint back and it brings faded black rubber trim back but one has to make sure it gets wiped down so it doesn't "eat" the plastic and rubber. I also want to know more about soda blasting itself, you didn't explain about it in this vid but I can do my own research on that. But great vid, I appreciate your ranting and raving, lots of little truths to be had. I don't expect a reply as you have so many comments and you have other work to deal with but I'll keep watching your vids when I get moments of time. Thanx for all you do! You are doing the Lords' work, trying to keep the older, more practical vehicles than today's plastic disposable electronic nightmares, "iPhones on wheels" -on the road.
Soda blading is great. When finished, hose down the area. The baking soda dissolves and leaves a clean workspace behind...you do have to do a meticulous job of post-blast cleaning to make paint stick.
@@FieroDoug2010 I never heard of using baking soda, I'll have to look into that and try it, thanx for the tip! Seems like an inexpensive blast media to use.
I sandblasted copper casting wheels and I never screwed up one, but everyone else screwed up their share. I didn’t teach anyone my system due to job security, but it’s okay to say it now. I blasted at 22.5 degrees when everyone else did it all different angles. Maybe I shouldn’t be saying anything. I doubt anyone who works in a copper mill will be watching this.
I remember the dustless blast job and the dude was totally unprofessional and he blew that damn sand everywhere especially up in your shop where you got to do paint..... jack wagon

Good advice Pete.
I'm very sad that you left DFW, I live in Carrollton which is down the road from your old shop. I also have a spare hood for one of those (from a Euro car).
These old W114 coupes will rust in the Sahara.

God bless you Pete...........
That owners a moron...I had fully planned on having my car blasted and thank God came across your channel and you saved my project! Only had to tell me once to know that's a bad idea
Pete's the best...
Thanks Pete! Love the videos ! Say hi to swampy for me
were you in the navy Pete?
Believe me i know. I am a professional gunsmith/rifle builder and 1000yd benchrest shooter but some of these idiot people want to listen to their friends who dont do what i do for a living instead of follow my recommendations. Then it ends up being a problem down the road and its my favorite thing to say "well i told you but you didn't want to listen to me when i am the guy who does it"
For your next video please work on 1969 camaro engine I need help on it thanks buddy. Keep working hard
Soda blasting is good from on a Budget
LMAO at crushed glass
I believe you my friend Pete!!!
E Coat is the best stuff, Epoxy is the best we have in the aftermarket. I will sandblast door jambs but never complete cars too easy to screw up. Been around the business for 35 years have seen alot of BS sold for stripping paint good old -12 blast sand will do it.
I prefer an eastwood SCT, angle grinder and a DA sander. However I have more time than money. Saved $1500 only cost me a days labor.
Aircraft Stripper used to be the BEST! Not anymore -- the stuff is so EPA Screwed up that it's pure junk and doesn't strip anything!
@@diyautoschool Government ruins everything.
@@fraserfab68 there coming to ruin our lives soon . stock up on food or learn to grow it . and you know what else .

I'm joking when I ask if I can bring an old rusty truck out for you to paint . it would make great content to see you Ghost ride it off a cliff around your new shop somewhere in the mountains .
My db won’t warp ant Panel when used right
I appreciate what you do- -you have great advice I used often- especially the Napa spray rust killer- I have to know-I love busting balls- tell me if back when you were 25 years old -tell me what would have happened to me I went up to you and told you you did everything the wrong way - what would have happened to me?...lol
God bless mini🎉 hire out the knee action
God bless you Pete good man you are
What happened with the clutch
lol pete ya you knoe the guyyyy ya the guy
Seems like an inexpensive blast media to use.
does grinding the paint removes ecoat?
Yes it does.....
Wow! That hood looks like some squid went at it with a needle gun!
Love your videos
Just use plastic media blasting to avoid all of these heat issues.
what about walnut blasting ????????
I didn't know people still did that.. Ive had a few cars done with that and they came out great..
@@diyautoschool i know you can get walnut grit for blasting at harbor freight :-)
My friend Pete would you soda blast or sand blast a cast iron skillet? 🍳
No blasting anything. This is why I just sanded my car down to the factory primer and stopped. Then epoxy sealer and body work.
Abrasive blasting is a bit like paint and panel the quality 100% comes down to the skill of the bloke on the nozzle and using quality abrasive media!
It’s straight now!
My friend Pete!
God bless u car brother !!
I remember the dustless blast job and the dude was totally unprofessional and he blew that damn sand everywhere especially up in your shop where you got to do paint..... jack wagon
