Please be mindful that we will pause (we prefer to react in the moment & to avoid copyright strike), we will react with enthusiasm, smiles, tears, conversation, exchanged looks and air-instruments. We are expressive by nature and are truly very quirky in every sense of the word. This is who we are and this is what we’ve got to offer. We understand it may not be for everyone, but here's to hoping you all enjoy and we absolutely love positive comments and feedback.

#BrandX #PhilCollins #reaction - Видеоклипы
Bill Bruford who is a big friend of Phil Collins once said that Phil could do anything, even sound like Billy Cobhan and this is what he was talking about. Phil is a monster of a drummer.
He used to be, but now he has a physical disability.
@@davidpeters44 Unfortunately yes, but his son is an excellent drummer, following in his father's footsteps, and he will support on the up coming Genesis reunion tour.
Recorded around Genesis' Trick of the Tail. This is why that is Genesis' best album IMO. Selling England by the Pound is #2.
He said that Phil and himself have a similar sound. That’s as close to an approval that you’ll ever get out of Bruford.
Translation to non-Briton “Phil’s the man”.
@@mvjonsson his eldest son Simon is a damn good musician himself and the youngest boy is a footballer.
Phil's solo career overshadowed the fact that he's one of THE greatest drummers of all time... Phil always played to serve the song. And to clear up a misconception, Phil did not "Turn" Genesis to be more popular, it was Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks who decided collectively with Phil to go in that more simplified "poppier" direction. Brand X were/are brilliant, they're still together (without Phil) and they still bring the fusion goods.
If anything Phil was pulling Genesis towards fusion.
Phil continued to say throughout his life that he is a drummer, not a singer
Exactly what I would've said, but you beat me to it ;) Respect.
Yes and Steve Hackett left do to the different path the band was taking
People confuse Phil’s love of the Beatles and especially Motown with simplifying Genesis. That really lies squarely on Rutherford’s shoulders even more than Banks. Notice how Phil went on tour with Peter when he went solo? If Peter would’ve stuck with anyone it would be Phil.
THE WHOLE ALBUM IS A JOURNEY, PHIL COLLINS GIVING A DRUMS MASTERCLASS.
Percy Jones is for me a bass living god ! Try "Nightmare Patrol" from the album "Livestock", a pure jazz rock fusion bliss
Yeah! But there it's Kenwood Dennard on drums. Saw him with Jaco Pastorious (also featuring Mike Stern on guitar). One of my top concerts!
Livestock was the first Brand X album I purchased... back in the 70's at a local record shop. This album got me into Pat Martino as I had to find out where Kenwood Dennard came from.
mine as well
..."Livestock" was my first, summer of '77. Graduation.
Got to see them in London a few years later. I'd truly have to say Brand X is my favorite. Them, RTF, RUSH, and of course, Frank Zappa. Don't need anything else....🎉
Don't forget John Goodsall on guitar. Highly underrated
John Goodall’s solo on “Deadly Nightshade” from “Do They Hurt” is one of the hottest electric guitar solos all time bar none!
You probably dont give a shit but if you guys are stoned like me during the covid times then you can stream pretty much all of the latest movies and series on instaflixxer. Have been watching with my brother for the last few months :)
@Jude Steven Definitely, I've been watching on instaflixxer for years myself :)
I learned a lot of blues links from Atomic Rooster IV. .that's guitarists must.
He was also great on Atomic Rooster.
Brand X is great, Percy Jones on bass is amazing. Phil is great. Make sure to check out "Bruford", Bill Bruford's jazz fusion band from the 70's as well. I assume you've already heard Mahavishnu Orchestra and Weather Report?
Mike Rutherford Bassist of Genesis said "Phil can play any time signature that you throw at him and more" And that is a great thing! Phil is under rated if anything!
Rutherford couldn't match Percy Jones on his best day.
My fave drum album of all time.. and for me the best drum album ever ....🥁
Phil had power and endurance like no one else.
This is a clinic of drumming. Absolutely out of this world. Sadly John Goodsall passed away in November 2021.
The bass player is Percy Jones. He plays a fretless bass. There's a yt video about him called 'Bass Exploration of Percy Jones'. It's in 4 parts. Enjoy 🙂
RIP John Goodsall. Guitarist supreme.
One of my favorites. Overlooked for their entire career. Stellar musicians.
Percy Jones on bass is a monster!! John Goodsall on guitar. Yes!!
Whenever someone doubts my claims of how good a drummer Phil is, I always grab Brand X and it works every time. For you, I recommend their album Product from 1979. Many high points.
..."Product"?! I would put that like in 4th or 5th place 🎉
I like this first album the best and this first track shines...one of my all time favourites....Spine tingler...
Welcome to what I have been listening to since the album came out 😊
Up there with Mahavishnu Orchestra as two of my absolute favorite classic fusion 70s band, phenomenal. And oh yeah, Brand X and Racer X, can't go wrong with either!😁
Dang, Phil is a monster. Listen to them both go "ooohhhh" when the drums kick in at the beginning of the song.
I've listened to this since it was first released. I find it fun to re-listen and focus on a different instrument each time. They're all virtuosos, of course, but Collins drumming is incredible here.
... you two are cracking me up! I've been listening to this beautifully amazing & awesome music since 1977. Brand X is the shit!(Good thing) Hope you're listening to their other albums. Use headphones. Thanks for the upload 🎉
There's a couple Brian Eno records with Phil Collins and Percy Jones on them. Well worth checking out!
Cool background story on how Phil ended up on Eno's albums. Gabriel brought in Eno for a listen while Genesis were recording the Lamb and Pete had Eno "ennosify" his vocals here and there. When they asked Eno how much for your services, Eno said...give me that Phil dude in trade in my studio. I guess he knew talent when he saw it.
Brand X for my birthday? That was too nice, you guys!😂 Glad you're discovering them. Not only Phil, but Percy Jones, who is an absolute beast on bass. Phil and Percy also contribute to Brian Eno's great solo albums, Another Green World and Before And After Science. We need to get you digging into Eno sometime! Nice reaction!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!! 🎂 🥳
Thank you for all your support! Hope you have a great day!! Love, Lex
Love Eno's solo albums but I wonder how "Here Come The Warm Jets" would be received ? Lol - Especially "Baby's on Fire" my favourite track on that album. A weird and wonderful album I doubt he could have got Roxy Music to say, ok we can do this with you, & considering tracks like Ladytron, that just tells you how weird Eno decided to go with that solo album.
Actually, Jim, I say we try and talk them into an album review of Tiger Mountain. Now THAT would be fun!😂
Brand X is brilliant, and the album “Moroccan Roll” was my first of theirs (LP). You can hear Phil do vocals on the song “Sun in the Night”, and Phil wrote a good bit on their albums.
Brilliant song. Shows how great a drummer Phil Collins is
Great Review! I love this album. The 6 tracks are amazing! Nuclear Burn opens the door to an amazing expirience. Born Ugly and Euthanasia Waltz are my favourite tracks of this album. Percy Jones is one of my favourite Bass Players, he is a beast of the fretless bass! Hear him in Tunnels with Percy Jones: Natural Selection! What a disc! Blessings to you both my friends!
Nick,
Same here, always heard of them and a band called "Be Bop Deluxe". I know Phil was on the original line-up (Brand X), and I may have heard 2 tracks (this may be 1 of them?). I LOVE the beginning of this track (this may be the only LP I have of them, but its in "storage" with most of my Lp and CD collection). One of those albums I never got around to. Loving the sound of the keyboards on the solo! Phil can jam, if he can do it live with Chester Thompson, he's capable of anything.
(With hands on my hip, wagging my finger) For more Prog Rock/Prog Metal, go listen to the playlists I sent last month. You'll get to know some obscure/underground bands that I KNOW you will enjOy (no, really), and you may want to look into each band a bit more as reaction videos :D.
Still have all those lp's. Love those guys, along with Dregs, RTF, all that 70's fusion.
I think you would like "Take a Pebble" by Emerson Lake and Palmer. This Brand X song is very Jeff Beck like. very nice.
This was my first time hearing this band too. Very jazzy. Great musicians. Loved it. More please.
Been out RUclips for quite awhile back so take some time so catching up on you two's videos back in the Spring (2021) Love,Love,Love Brand X. I seriously doubt Phil could do this again but, this really shows off his talent as well as this collaboration ..Love, your reaction...WooHoo!
Phil is just SICK here.
Brand X were more of a collective, sort of a night band and day band while working on material.
Bill Bruford was part of it as well, though Phil played on most early studio albums, there are live recordings with Bill.
I used to have a monthly catch up beer with Robin Lumley when he relocated to Aus before passing away a few years ago.
I resupplied Phil with an early studio live recording of the band they thought was lost for good...i think that's available now.
Brilliant band, and Robin was great at producing them....and those creamy moog solos with trippy tape-echo...what can i say.
John Goodsall (guitarist) had a band called Fire Merchants in the 90's that was badass, was lucky enough to see them.
Its so refreshing to see a reaction on a relatively unknown, but hugely talented band. And yet again you managed to transport me back in time to my first listen. I was instantly hooked, and they became my favourite fusion band for many years. And yes, what an incredible drummer Phil Collins is. Sadly his solo years overshadowed his drumming talents... Cheers Bob.
lol! love watching you expieriance Brand X for the first time, you have many albums more to get through now!
You guys...this was so great! 🍀 I was listening to Brand X - Missing Period recently... which is also so good! I can’t wait for you two to react to more Brand X. 🥁 Also please check out Bruford’s One of a Kind, Gradually Going Tornado and Feels Good to Me for more fusion greatness in the late 1970’s. Thx so much 😎
You picked a good first cut to listen to! (Try "Cambodia" as well)
I got to see The John Goodsall band once at the Baked Potato. He did Brand X, Fire Merchants, and a cover of Red by KC.
Great selection to listen to. I added Unorthodox Behaviour to my collection way back when, then picked up a cd copy more recently. It's one of the albums I've loaded on my work computer for some background while working the day away.
...again I will suggest Be Bop Deluxe... since you liked this song, I'll suggest one of two songs from their Live! In The Air Age album:
Adventures In A Yorkshire Landscape
Shine
Both are relaxed numbers... good for cruising in your car or just kicking back in a dark room.
Saw them recently with Kenwood Denard but still Percy and Goodsal...Amazing group...We were rocking them on the corner in the 70's on the FM overnights or College stations or 8 track...:)...Moroccan Roll, is a killer album too...And So to F or Not Good Enough are two of there greatest jams...
Genesis' The Lamb Lies down on Broadway is like four Supper's Ready.
Brand X at start of Knebwoth,U.K at the end of that night Genesis.Sometime in the 1970's.
I was there. 78
Do more of Brand X, please!!!! You have loved it that much, just can imagine your future pleasure o lots other great tracks and albums they did!
I love you guys! Lex is beautiful, can I have her? LOL...No seriously, can I? Keep up the great work, more Renaissance please.
WOW! I have to find this on vinyl. It sounds kind of like a Billy Cobham album.
Had the good fortune to see these guys live, opening for Genesis of course. Pretty smokin live as well.
Ugh! That was SO AWESOME!! OMG! You guys have the best Reaction show! Your choice of music is so fantastic! I've been a fan of Brand X (and, of course, Genesis) since the later part of the '70's, thanks to all the great albums my brothers were listening to! They were into Genesis, King Crimson, Hendrix, Rush, Yes, Brand X, RTF, Gong, Gentile Giant, Frank Zappa, Steely Dan, Zeppelin and the list goes on! So I was blessed to be turned on to that music pretty early on. My favorite Brand X album is their Live album called "Livestock". It's basically an EP, since it was only a single disc offering, but it gives you a great introduction to the band. Great fusion, you all! Thank you! Hey, also don't forget about Genesis, live, "The Musical Box" (1973, audio only)!
Great comment and last line which is that Musical Box Live request. My little laugh was the minor misspell by accident of the band Gentle Giant. "Gentile" Giant, the non-Jewish cover band I never heard of, lol. All good and a great list of so many bands that I also grew up on in the late 70's. Going to look up RTF, never heard of that one.
@@Vince-lq3ve, haha! Oops, darn typos! 😄 RTF is Return To Forever, who im sure you know! Yes, tons of excellent music, growing up! Throw on Jean Luc Ponty and John McLaughlin and you get a food picture. I grew up around musicians and music lovers!
Wow!! Did not expect Brand X tonight! A college radio obsession...👍👍🎶‼️Very trippy sound...a prolific collective, so much talent, lineup changes every album. Worth exploring 🙏🏼‼️
Now we're talking!! I saw them twice ( cafe campus near the university of montreal and the st. denis theatre also in Montreal), back in the 80s. Awesome!!!😀
LOVE Brand X! Seen them many times and own most of the records/cd's.
Percy Jones is a Mack Truck and only a few could match John Goodsall.
RIP Johnny you are missed.
Such a great album! Start to finish this one’s a gem!
It's Beautiful! Greatly enjoyed! :)
My first live concert as a 16 year old was Brand X at a small club in San Francisco. Can you say mind blowing...?
First time hearing Brand X for me, should be interesting. I'm really enjoying the drumming from Phil and the other instrumentation is great as well. Very solid track.
This is great! Now I can only hope that someone else will ask you to react to Zappa’s Little House I Used To Live In from Burnt Weeny Sandwich since you won’t do it for me!
Burnt Weeny Sandwich. First album I bought. 1970.
Reacting to some Brand X. Awesome. My favorite album by them is Masques, but this is great too.
I happened upon this album in the store and thought it might be stale brand x, but then was I in for a surprise. Euthanasia Waltz is another thriller off this album.
RIP 😮robin lumley keyboard player for BRANDX !!!!
todavía tengo el vinilo! hace 20 años que no lo escuchaba, pero sabía que iba a entrar la guitarra como entra, así con ese riff. nice reaction you!👍 (yes this sounds like Romantic Warrior)
I think the best Brand X song is "Macrocosm" off the "Moroccan Roll" album. You might want to check it out.
Agreed
When I first heard this song, I made a "Fusion" playlist based just on this song. Now that playlist has over 67 songs from varying artist. Another thing I noticed about this song, "who the hell is this drummer and why haven't I heard of him before?" Found out later it was the legendary Phil "Remember the Alamo" Collins. ;)
FYI, the guitar player is John Goodsall...and he is absolutely amazing. I saw these guys at the Roxy in Hollywood after this album came out. As I recall, they played four songs in two hours. I could be wrong about that (it's been awhile), but it was an improv fest. Great band.
This one, Moroccan Roll and Masques are the top BX albums, I’d say. Masques has dome wicked guitar by Goodsall, but the drummer is not Collins on that one.
This was released the same year as the first Genesis album after Peter Gabriel left, “A Trick of the Tail.” For another example of how good a drummer Phil Collins was, try the first track of that album, called “Dance on a Volcano.”
Brand X did for some time have Pierre Moerlen as a drummer. He was incredible but sadly die May 3rd 2005 (so almost exactly 16 years ago). He was the drummer of Gong, a highly original progressive rock band that you should definitely check out. As a starter I recommend "Isle of Everywhere/You Never Blow Yr Trip Forever" (actually two songs played as one) from their 1974 album "You". Great rhythm section with Pierre on drums and Mike Howlett on bass, and Didier Malherbe on saxes and flute and Steve Hillage on guitar are fantastic too. Here a link:
ruclips.net/video/4Oh-zvoS1rw/видео.html
Pierre and Mike start simply but gradually complicate the stuff they play.
Sweet.... So very tight.... It's been so long for an ear full of this....
Ears instantly drawn to the drums, i mean, if the only thing anyone knows of Phil Collins is him singing and playing drums in "In the Air Tonight", then they know absolutely nothing about why this guy became such a huge star, insanely talented individual, great reaction guy's
Saw them at the Tower in Philly with this line up.
What wonderful music, much dif than PCs radio friendly stuff
GOOD FOR YOU
I went to a concert of the George Duke Billy Cobham Band, with Brand X as the support band. I saw Phil Collins outside standing on his own, so I walked up to him and said, how come you're not on stage, as the concert started five minutes ago? He told me that he was only producing Brand X now, and that he had now replaced himself with Rick Parmell.
Parnell became best known for playing the part of Mick Shrimpton, the drummer in the film of Spinal Tap.
And if you want to hear some other incredible UK jazz rock featuring, surprisingly, the blues rock virtuoso Gary Moore, then you must check out the last two albums by Colosseum 2! Those albums are Electric Savage and War Dance. For example, check out Intergalactic Strut from the former and The Inquisition from the latter. The preceding album also featuring Moore. Strange New Flesh, was more proggy, although a great listen too. Moore shows his virtuosity in this context, turning in a very DiMeola like performance in places. The group grew out of the original band Colosseum, which was formed by the amazing drummer Jon Hiseman, and Colosseum is widely regarded as one of the founding fathers of both prog and arguably jazz rock.I consider Hiseman to be one of the greatest drummer of all time bar none, especially as a soloist. You can find out more about C2 here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colosseum_II Here is a short live gig they did and about the only live footage of the band: ruclips.net/video/BwvzYvyBZT4/видео.html
edit:
During conversations I found out that the drummer, Kenny Grohowski, had been playing with Felix Pastorius, Jaco's son.
(sometimes my brain doesn't know what my fingers are doing)
John Goodsall is the guitarist.
John Goodsall was the lead guitarist for Atomic Rooster , hell of a player
Sorry guys - just got back to your channel after about 6 months. Its amazing to see you guys do a Brand X tune. Most people when you say "Brand X" they just look at you funny. This was actually the first concert that I had been too in 1979. I had just arrived from Germany (from a small village) so no concerts. I made friends with some cool people - good musical taste Genesis, Yes, Jethro Tull etc. So my friend literally had to drag me out to his show in Toronto. Very amazing to see Brand X with Phil Collins. My next how was Steve Hackett at the same Venue in 1980 and then Genesis in the summer of 1980. do you see a pattern???
Love your reactions, guys!! Brand X is always fun to listen to!
Have you heard Camel? If not, I'd suggest a reaction of the track "Ice", Please!!! Andy Latimer is in the same league as Gilomore when it comes to play with feeling. Fun fact, Roger Waters auditioned him for a post-PF tour, but Andy Latimer didn't make it just because he didn't have the vocal range and RW wanted a guitar player who could sing.
Very cool music! Reminiscent of some of the Chick Corea/Return to Forever, John McLaughlin, or Al DiMeola that I loved to listen to in the 70s, but I'd never heard this before. It's as if we discovered it together! I might recommend you look for an album with Paco de Lucia, John McLaughlin and Al DiMeola for some virtuosity that is just . . . OUT THERE!
If you like Brand X, check out an album called "Marscape"... it basically is Brand X plus more... also "Peter and the Wolf"... more of Brand X and Eno as the wolf...
THIS - it what you play for anyone who says Phil Collins was a "blah" drummer.
Or anything on 'The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway'! Phil elevates Genesis.
If you like this... try "801 Live" by Brian Eno and Phil Manzanera. All the track eclipse their studio counterparts ( when there are any ). Try the track "East Of Asteroid" similar to Brand X. Also their version of The Beatle's "Tomorrow Never Knows" is spectacular! TRUST ME, JUST ONCE! LOL
And now Hatfield and the North and the amazing Dave Stewart rabbit hole - next to Emerson and Wakeman the best keyboard players.
You can hear this fusion style drumming influencing Phil's work on Genesis' The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. Phil can play any style, anything really.
(oh, Genesis was in big debt when Peter abandoned ship) Their first real hit (and money) came in 1978 with 'Follow You, Follow Me'. Debt gone!
Phil Collins - Drums, John Goodsall - Guitar, Perc Jones - Fretless Bass, Robin Lumley - Keyboards.
I pretty much have all their albums. "Do they Hurt" is fabulous, especially "Voidarama", "Cambodia",
"Triumphant Limp" and "D.M.Z."
One of my favourite Brand X songs is "Operation Hearts and Minds" from their last album "Manifest Destiny". John Goodsall is a great guitarist.
How about doing the Brand X pop song? Streets of Soho. Phil being Phil, before he was Phil. It's a fun tune. By the way, I love this one...I used to have it on vinyl, never replaced. I have to amend that mishap!
Soho is a great song, really like it! I believe there were only one more song with vocals in english, from the same album, Don't Make Waves. Another song which was not in english but in sanskrit, Sun in the Night, from the album Morrocan Roll.
For your edification: BRAND X are
John Goodsall - Guitar
Percy Jones - Bass (Greatest electric bassist (along with the late and much-lamented Jaco Pastorius) of the last 50
years!
Phil Collins - Drums
Robin Lumley - Keyboards
Morris Pert - Percussion
Unorthodox Behaviour and Moroccan Roll are their two best albums!!
Yeah, I felt like I was transported by that. I think it's my first listen although I've heard Brand X before. That time period had such creativity zooming about. Speaking of Genesis have you listened to their piece Firth of Fifth yet? It's nothing like Brand X except for Phil Collins, but it has some extraordinary musicianship in progressive fashion. Cheers!
Great Band !
Yes, yes yes!!! Brand X!
Phil has developed his skills grace to Brand X. He used to call BrandX as his mistress compared to Genesis, his "regular" ;-) He was far more free to experiment and have fun with Brand X in a more loose concept ;-)
John Goodsal : Guitars
Phil Collins : Drums, percussions
Percy Jones : Bass
Robin Lumley : keyboards
Now you're fan of jazz-rock-fusion from Brand X, you have plenty of jewels to enjoy, try all the albums from the first to "Is There Anything About?" (1982)
One track I hugely suggest to you is "And so f…", from Phil mostly (he used to play it live on his first solo tours)
And try "Livestock", a live album that gathers all the best first songs of Brand X in the live context which is AWESOME!
Oh and Masques is their most 'composed' album, where John Goodsall hits his peak. The drummer is Chuck Burgi who does an amazing job. Masques is my favourite after Unorthodox Behaviour.
Yeah, Phil and the bass player, Percy Jones played on Brian Eno's Another Green World. A very unique sounding record. Some of the pieces are like paintings with music. "Over Fire Island" is a good instrumental with the two of them. It really is a must hear album.
Brand X had a couple different drummers cover for Phil Collins' commitment to Genesis, including Bill Bruford, who also provided percussion with Phil on an early tour (!). Brand X and Genesis had the same manager, Tony Smith. Collins left in 1980, busy with Genesis and his solo career. That same year Brand X and the band Bruford toured together. Percy Jones left the band in 2020, leaving John Goodsall the only remaining founding member.
Just to correct my previous post on Brand - X, it Masques, and a great track is Deadly Nightshade!!
If you like Goodsall, he features prominenly on Macrocosm ( Moroccan Roll) and Deadly Nightshade (Masques)
Nick & Lex great job as usual. I want to say something about the Phil Collins critics who blame him for the direction the band took after Steve Hackett left the band. I being a major early Genesis fan (Up to Duke then things get real spotty ) I too became disenchanted with Genesis's direction, but then I heard an interview with Phil about those criticisms. He gave a very good answer that made sense and I've come to terms with the direction they went in. When asked about it he said that when the band was younger they were listening to different music than they listen to today (being older) so the music they now create reflects that. He added that we all listen to different music at different stages of our lives and I and the band members are no different in that respect. So there you go, an answer that I respect even if I don't like the music they have created since 1980. I hope that makes others take his words to heart and come to peace with it, I have. Keep up the great work and keep on loving each other.
ahhhhh just one word.......MONEY
the song reflects perfection on all levels.
Now you are talking! This was an astonishing group that allowed Phil the ability to show his incredible drumming ability, and the rest of the band are insanely good also, with John Goodsall on guitar showing what a unique voice he had on the instrument! Got to say though, Goodsall does not sound like DiMeola or McLaughlin, he is literally one of a kind?! Over the years they have had many drummers, including Pierre Moerlen from Gong (who I saw live with them). Just check out their live album Livestock, although the drummer on that is Kenwood Dennard. The next track to listen to on this album is Running on Three, the guitar solo will melt your face!
Great underrated band - I had all their early albums
Before this band, guitarist John Goodsall played with Atomic Rooster, after Brand X he formed the group Fire Merchants. I have one of their songs on my list. Once Goodsall had to abandon a tour because he developed tendonitis from playing too fast.
i have both fire merchants cd's. and no, they are not for sale.
Brand X is one of my favorite fusion bands from the 70s, if not my favorite. The band on this album was Phil Collins - Drums, Morris Pert - percussion, Percy Jones - bass, Robin Lumely - keys, John Goodsall - guitars. Malaga Virgin still one of my favorite tracks from them, they just burn on it.
Some other prog/fusion/Jazz bands to check out:
National Health
Hatfield and the North
Gong
Aquarium Rescue Unit
Tribal Tech
Brian Auger and the Oblivion Express
Chick Corea Elektric Band
Jing Chi
Happy The Man
