Why do you stop your oval at the top of the ko box then grommet it, when if you squash the sides of the 20 mm oval it will fit perfectly through the ko and into the box making it completely rewireable
I can't believe how chilled out this is. 5 days to do a rewire. I used to be a QS at a firm where we had 2 squads of 4 sparks that did an occupied rewire each per day. They had job n knock and were in the van to go home by 15:30. They had 10 circuits to install and a full RCBO board. And all the bonding / Main earth. They also knocked out every box with a scutch chisel. To be fair that's all they had done for years and could do it blind folded.
Occupied? Move furniture, lift carpets, strip out, put back and done by 15.30pm? Maybe a one bed flat?
@@Poorlybobsdad nope 3 bed houses. Moving beds etc and pulling carpets back. They had been doing just rewires for the local authority for over 10 years. They literally went round the house like the Tasmanian devil and ate their sandwiches on the go. I couldn’t do it but they could.
I always run a smoke alarm feed separate from the lights. However I stick it in with one of lighting breakers. Stops people turning it off like you said, and that way you always got a feed just incase.

That all round band is brilliant. All these years I’ve been using plugs, screws and penny washers 🤦🏻♂️
Not done loop in way since rcd protection required on lights. I fit a deeper switch box and lever wago neutrals then solid wago cpc’s. This leaves just a t&e to the fitting. If there’s a fault you can just remove the switches and fault find all faults from there without dropping the fitting, handy if you’re installing chandeliers.
Agreed...it's also very rare for pendants to used these days, modern fittings are a nightmare to use as a JB...a combination of three plate and neutral at the switch seems confusing to me. I prefer to feed the switch and run a S/L & N to the fitting.

My God ! That is an Astraseal pvc front door made from Brugmann Hoffman profile from the early 80’s. Started my career at 17 in 1980 working in factory making their products then became fitter. Now 60 and totally kaput back from years of lifting frames and glass. How time flys.

I agree 100% with having smokes on lighting circuits as well but I'm pretty sure there's a new reg. which says that new installations have to be on their own circuit? I might be talking carp?

Use an optical alarm or combo alarm (optical + heat) in living areas, or a combo alarm (carbon monoxide + heat) in kitchens to prevent false activations. E.g. Aico Ei3016, Ei3024 or Ei3028.

Interesting to see the sequence other people do things, I always like to do the attic work first on day one, to get it out the way, also I never risk doing all the chasing first, just in case you can't get to a chase you have cut, I always put the cables in, then chase out.

@@mrseanpride6449 you could cut a chase, only to realise when you lift the floor you can't get a cable there, you never what you come across under the floor, personally I don't cut a chase until I have all the cables in.
Just a tip with the old carpet. I find if you roll it you won’t have any creases. All ways come off the lighting circuit as you lot said in the video, always happens.
Like it. Standard 12.5mm plasterboard has to be doubled up to give 30 minutes fire resistance. (Building regs)
Because there were only pvc windows , mostly in Germany at that time Astraseal was sold a a franchise and adverts were placed in the Observer magazine by Hepworth who would then send out tons of leads which were mostly higher social / economic people who may have seen tilt and turn windows or wanted their windows and doors made from this new , expensive wonder material called upvc. In those days because the technology had not transferred over to uk style of windows only tilt and turns were available.
Those windows were the first generation of upvc windows and doors in this country , distributed by Hepworth industrial polymers in Burnley whose M.D. Peter Abbot went on to work as M.D. for Veka ( huge company). Those frames have a sanded and polished finish which was dropped in favour of corner grooving , but with the early extrusions the surface finish was poor and so all the frames had to be sanded all over. I spent months and months sanding with an air DA then polishing with a rotary sisal brush to get an acceptable finish. If I was at that site with you I would have to look along the door frame on the surface those metal gold coloured keeps screw to to point out the brugmann marking which was a small semi circle over a bigger one and two at each side and a date stamp to say when it was made. My guess to get the double glazing anorak of the year award would be 1984-85.

Just had my house rewired. No conduit used. Some of the chases were so shallow, the depth of the plaster the spirit level was rocking on the cable clips. I was going to run plastic caping strip (not sure what it’s called, strip available in different widths with the edges folded to allow a fixing to be applied) over the wire but the wire is often tight to the edge of the chase. I had Ethernet installed, I asked for Cat 6, Cat 5e was installed. There’s no extra shielding between the electric cable and the Ethernet as can be seen in the cutout of plasterboard used to accommodate the wires and they look to be touching in places. Apparently “it’s safe” and that over rides everything.

Best to use the rechargeable type smokes ,as you say with the battery type when the batteries run down you get the annoying beep 👍
Nice in the USA, that we have battery powered units that use 10 year Lithium batteries that will last the life of the unit, however cities require AC powered units, which still use silly 9V batteries and die as well and have to be changed.

its neat clipping the cables under floor boards but sometimes for slip ups we used to leave a bit of spare cable to be able to pull some more through, and also why not go behind the coving instead of cutting it?
Conduit should go into the box. pinch with pipe grips and goes straight in

Good idea on the all round band for the oval conduit. I normally use clout nails but they aren't always suitable so will keep this in mind for future. Oval makes a much neater job than capping I reckon. Much narrower chases too!
I use a makita wall chaser and set it for the width of the oval conduit no need to fix the conduit to the wall as it usually fits snug in the chase. I am thinking of getting the metabo chasing disc as it takes out all the chase so need to to use an sds to knock it out but it seems expensive at £99 a disc
And you don't slice your fingers like with capping. Those cuts REALLY hurt and take ages to heal too.
Capping for first fix on block work extensions etc... conduit for rewires all day long...why is this even a talking point??
Does the banding just fold over oval conduit from both sides and not fixed just folded?

I thought we could only drill holes between 25-40% either end of the joists span? I noticed at 1 minute in they were less than this. Does this building reg only apply to new builds?

Whats that plastic cable channel trunking stuff called please? I just chased out so wide for conventional channeling! That stuff is way nicer..

@@michaelcoleman5229 I just got 1 length of all sizes (not curved.) Using 30mm x 30mm wall chaser but all my chases only 22mm deep. I put them 50mm wide for the channeling now change mind I want to use trunking. Will chase deeper this weekend

Nick, sounds like there is a market for dual circuit smoke alarms.
Dedicated circuit goes down, do some beeps. Lighting circuit goes down, do some beeps.
No idea how you would isolate them on the inside of the smoke alarm, but I bet some landlords would like their renters from disabling the smoke alarms
If its a rental I put the smokes on with a lighting circuit. Prevents the tenants from turning them off.

@@lj6322 it was mostly all good mate, Just with covid we had do some online lessons which wasn't ideal.
If your having the smokes on the same circuit as say the upstairs lights would it be ok to take the feed from the board to the downstairs smokes then a 3core to upstairs smokes then take the upstairs lights off of the smokes. (less wiring as only one cable between floors) thoughts on this anyone
Smokes ‘should’ have a means of isolation without turning the lights off. That being said you could still make it work
Never understood why in the UK we go through all this work chasing out etc and don't install a ducting system to pull individual cables around the building! would enable this job to be carried out much easier when the time comes again. T&E is in my opinion is gash.

I imagine those windows are in that property , in such a wonderful location because back in the day those earlier customers tended to be of solid financial means . Even though I was just a bod on the factory floor I still got to know about jobs for a reallly Rich jeweler and a huge mansion. Irony was our M.d who did the surveying and steered the ship was shrewd but a nasty greedy idiot who mismeasured loads of frames and if he did not own 1/3rd of the company would have been fired the first week for sucking the company so much it never had a chance to grow and being a total idiot. Such a shame how a bad, selfish leader can do such harm. After the initial purchase of the machines from Germany He spent no money on the workshop. One Monday he presented 3 wood chisels to me he had bought from a market.. these were the days Chinese steel was made from butter. We took it in turn to sand the frames and had to use one respirator that just got washed out for your next 2 week stint on the sanders. There is a lot of bad industry out there with some owners taking all the wealth that the men have grafted to make that’s sadly for sure.
