Border Hustle: Private prisons, smugglers and cartels cash in on migrants

  • Carlos and his 6-year-old daughter Heyli traveled nearly 1,700 miles together from Honduras to reach the U.S. border - and what they hoped would be the start of a new, better life - only to be separated by more than 1,200 miles shortly after they surrendered to Border Patrol agents and requested asylum. Along the way, they became small players in a shadowy, multi-billion dollar global enterprise: the smuggling of human beings for profit.
    In this documentary, The Texas Tribune and TIME traced their journey and investigated the booming smuggling industry that has thrived as the U.S. government seeks to close America's southern border and record numbers of migrant families make the long trek north.

    This is messed up and hits way too close to home. My dad got his papers fixed years ago after tons of stress, money, lawyer run around bs and it is fucking tough my dad had a heart attack in that time from stress alone. He did come out on top though working his ass off as a lead groundskeeper for the last 16 years hes built a beautiful life for my family and I that I could not be more grateful for, he's officially a citizen and unless he gets in trouble with the law he is here to stay permanently. I hope everybody dealing with family members caught in the system stays strong and pulls through even if there doesn't seem to be light at the end keep pushing cause my family did and it worked out in the end.

      @@OJA-jf7bp your father is an exception. Clearly, or else the arduous nature of all the things you described wouldn’t be sacrifices. Illegal immigration is illegal. Do I get to go to your family and become a member STRICTLY because you can afford it? (For arguments sake since everyone assumes the USA has an infinite number of spots available). Obama deported more immigrants than any other president and he built the cages. Most of us would sit in the muck before we would risk a chance for the opportunity to eventually have a better life. I'm one that seems to admire those that take the risk but I myself would keep my family close and sit in the muck. Who knows what is right. You mean like in 1954 when the president of Guatemala wanted to pass agrarian reform to help poor farmers and peasants in the country? The CIA overthrew him at the request of United Fruit Company (Chiquita Bananas) under the excuse that he was working with the Soviets (spoilers he wasn't!) and replaced him with a brutal dictatorship that threw the country into decades of civil war. Certain countries and certain people have an interest in keeping certain other countries poor and noncompetitive.

    • @for.u925
      @for.u925 3 года назад

      well not shit they don't care about the people they just care about the money. I don't think that's the question tho. Parents don't do that cause they hate their kids and want to put them at risk, its cause they know it will be worth it once their kids can go to school in peace and they can afford a good breakfast. Ik it's hard to comprehend cause it feels like both sides can be on the right but we cannot forget that without this war on drugs the cartel violence wouldn't be as drastic. Also did you know MS13 was started here in the US in like 80s or 90s cause of the ongoing gang war. I'm not blaming the US but things have cause and effect and can't look at it from a bias standpoint.

      Detention centers serve their purpose and I'm all for enforcing immigration laws but what was happening a few years ago was almost the equivalent to the concentration camps of ww2. America would most likely be like Nazis Germany by now if it was not for the left. As retarded as those tree huggers might seem at times they have saved hundreds of thousands of American and Latin American lives. They are the ones keeping the Trump administration in check and if it were not for them the administration would be out of control and there would be a all out civil war in this country.

I can understand a parent wanting a better life for their children but I cannot understand putting them in that kind of dangerous situations . How do they not now about the dangerous situations on both sides of the borders there putting their children in ? I truly don’t and can’t possibly understand I get that I don’t know that kind of struggle I am blessed that I was born and have lived as a Texan . I don’t see any kind of solution for all of these issues besides trying to immigrate to the U.S. legally . Honestly I’m not even sure doing that is a good ideal right now so much corruption and uncertainties in the U.S. these days . God please watch over these children please protect them any kind of harm that the evils in this world would do to them . I wish there was a easy button for all of this but not even in the U.S. do we get that .

    Why it is that in Africa they speak English easily but in South America, which is just a neighbor to the US, many don't speak English. I am from the Philippines and it is so common for a Spanish person to approach locals here and ask, Do you speak Spanish? This I find to be pure arrogant. It is also very common for a spanish person to ask, Do you speak Spanish in the US. They want to come to US, but English language is given no importance to them. Even the poorest of the poorest community in Aftrica or Philippines can speak little English or atleast they try to.

    This not the way. Having children in a poverty stricken place and then running off to a foreign land to take you in is crazy. That little girl could have been interfered with, and the husband killed. Yet the US is complicit in helping keep their countries messed up by interfering with their economies and partaking in the drug trafficking and gun smuggling throughout Latin America. So how do you change it? By bringing awareness to all sides of what is happening. Beginning with why their countries are so poor and controlled by drug gangs, before documenting fleeing people.
