  • ARNALA
Arnala is a historic place with a fort on an Island.
    ARNALA FORT
In 1516 a local ruler in Gujarat, Sultan Mahmud Begda, built the fort on a small island of the port town of Arnala, strategically situated at the mouth of the Vaitarna river. In the 1530s the Portuguese gained control of the island. The island was donated to a Portuguese nobleman by the captain of Bassein who ripped down the old fort and began construction of a 700-by-700-foot (210 m × 210 m) fort. The nobleman never completed the fort. Still, it remained under Portuguese control for two centuries and they used it to control shipping and navigation along the northern Konkan coast.
Since the fort is built on an island and surrounded by water it is also known as "Jaldurg" or "Janjire Arnala".
The Portuguese, who built the fort called the island Ilha das vacas. which means 'Island of the cows' in Portuguese.
The Main solid stone entranceway on the northern side is adorned with carvings of tigers and elephants.
There is a huge freshwater reservoir inside the fort.
The Arnala Fort is a fantastic combination of 2 different cultures with a mosque, tombs of hajjali and shahali and temples of goddess Bhawani, lord shiva and ambakeshwar in the Fort.
The villagers grow vegetables on plots within the fort, also as on the western aspect outside the fort.
The entire Fortification wall is interconnected.
Fort exploration takes around 1 hour.
Maintained by ASI archaeological survey of India.
