    keep in mind for new students, silat will make you sick, because it will be trained very hard, usually silat applied to the world of the Indonesian Military. You will be kicked in the thighs, legs, hands, etc., to strengthen your body's hardness to endure the pain, then you will be taught Yoga to calm yourself after being beaten repeatedly by your trainer, then you will be taught the first to intermediate techniques, then the level of proficiency. So do not be afraid, in martial arts taught to treat and taught self-immunity.

    silat came from the culture of nusantara (thailand,malaysia,indonesia,phillipine,brunei,singapore), its focus on strengthening the core muscle rather than build muscle. most of the 'gerakan' (step) came from the malay mentality which is, must be 1.beauty 2.simple 3.deadly. They always think how to kill the opponent in easiest way. Thats why its not suitable in sport. nice sharing.!

    I disagree with the idea that going to the ground from the getgo is the best thing to do in a self defense situation. Self defense should be about creating opoortunities to extract yourself from a physical confrontation asap, not prolonging it by engaging in a wrestling match with the opponent. Ideally, you should end the confrontation quickly by stunning the opponent with strikes and running away. Grappling and ground grappling should only be reserved as second and third lines of defense.

    • @steveo13757
      @steveo13757 4 года назад +1

      Not only that, but going to the ground with syringes and broken glass on the street, ummm no thanks. Also going to the ground leaves you wide open for his buddies to come up and kick you in the head while your on the ground. Sure ground fighting has its place in martial arts just like everything else, but should only be as a last option.

    • @godtale8117
      @godtale8117 4 года назад +7

      Its a finisher move, its not to prolong the fight, if u watch closely his hands/legs already on the neck or the joint part of the body than move to the ground ( its a k.o or broken hand/leg ), actually u already talkng about the basic idea of all silat movement, to end the fight as quickly as posible with less physical confrontation.

    There is a sport Silat but it is highly limited to keep it safe. Silat in Belgium is like Karate in the US. Sport Silat looks a lot like TKD or karate and usually does not go to the ground or use locks. Full Silat is based on knife fighting and doing joint damage... not good in sport lol.

      @chornahlk as a neophyte silat & kali practitioner who's also a firearms instructor and who's spent a significant portion of his life "in the streets" so to speak, I can tell you there's a reason why soldiers and gangbangers alike will all tell you that you're not much if you "Don't have no hands" as they say. Many people are not good marksman at close rang under stress unless they practice at least weekly. Proficiency with a karambit and basic silat jurus that can actually be executed with decent speed and quality would turn the tide in many an altercation. In the U.S., I encourage my family members to trained in silat & firearms because you never know what kind of situation you'll be in. Remember, Semi-Autos jam, primers can be bad, but a sharp, live blade against a major artery is always lethal.

    You can practice gouging the eyes or biting the neck - but in reality - most people can't or won't do that - they will do what they practiced many times - in a sport mma type training cos u know it works - obviously u can't practice biting the neck - so your mind will think of the most horrible scenario (maybe the guy holding his gushing neck and yelling at the top of his lungs) - and u just can't do it. So, yeah, u might have to do this and that - but most won't.

    Silat is interesting but has no real way to practice at full speed like combat arts like boxing, muay thai, wrestling, judo or bjj. That is why its effectiveness will always be questioned. It is a problem that silat needs to figure out. The old excuse that "its too deadly to spar with" or "its meant for the street" is not an explanation in 2022. The world knows too much now about how to train effectively to actually make an art work.

    • @Rigan-gemink
      @Rigan-gemink 2 года назад +1

      In silat there's tons of dirty moves that not allowed in mma caging, so there's no way to prove how effective silat is, striking to the eye, stomping head, etc.

      You can see silat practiced on competition, just search "tanding silat sea games" and you can see how we reduced the technique of silat to the point it can be used to competition, but the whole point of silat as "self defense" is gone since it turns to a form of "sport" with scoring, rules, etc.
      It's still a good sport tho, where you need speed, and techniques to do "tanding"

    This is just horrible jiu jitsu ... done in the guise of Silat. I trained all throughout Indonesia from '75 to '82. Had a lot of 'matches' - both in sport (world championship in '82) and against many teachers throughout the length and breadth of Indo. generally, the best 'competitors' kicked the living shite out of all the 'art' (pencak) oriented guys. We did our bagwork, our running and our sparring. In the 'streets' - the top competitors did the best; not the 'seni' crowd.
