From his "bad boy" act you could come away with the impression that travis is a dumb muscle-headed goon. But when you see him speak, he's actually very eloquent and astute. Of course most armwrestlers are scientists of body strength.
He's a natural teacher! He earned my resect in this. He is a true master of the flash-hit win. Brzenk said most wins take less than a second. Travis has proved it.
Got to respect, Travis. Did his best to put arm wrestling on the map. A lot of people hated, Ali but they watched him. It's all good for the sports recognition. There needs to be characters in sports. Love them or hate them, they serve a purpose.
as much as I'd like to hate him in competitions and some interviews for the sheer cockiness, he is actually a really good teacher. his calm side was showed in "pulling John" too, he a cool dude
Alexey Voevoda just did an expo in Russia where he talks about the importance of finger strength. "Like a strike by a martial artist or boxer," he says, "deliver power at the fingers first, then the hand, wrist, arm, etc." Their techniques are a little different though. Alexey relies on that explosive, almost perfect timing. He also moves his entire body with his hand and arm as one. Travis holds them in tight, waits for the opponent to break uniformity, and then makes his move.
Archibald Doogan I think it's a lot to do with Alexei is a top roll 100% of the time and Travis is a hook and or high hook fighter so different techniques.different training style
You know, I was never a fan of travis because of his lack of respect before, but he really looks like he's maturing. Really really good for him :) He's great :)
He grows on you. Once you realize he's "poking fun with friends" instead of what, at first, comes off as ego. After awhile you see that he's really a great guy, a good sport, and a good showman to get Armwrestling the focus/drama it needs to push the sport forward. FYI, I used to dislike him as well, for the same reasons most here have stated.
Travis has always been a great guy, probably one of the nicest guys you will ever meet. Super knowledgeable and has a really high arm wrestling IQ on the table.
I am from MARTINSBURG West Virginia and I grew up with Travis and we have been through some crazy shit but I ended up going down the wrong path in life and he stayed focused and now look at him..
Travis Bagent has the strangest technique. He does the EXACT opposite that Devon Larratt does. Bagent is all about the pin line, he's all about side pressure, he thinks working out in the gym is better than being on the table and he just lets the opponent decide how they want to go at it when he just slams hard with side pressure. He's fast and it's obviously very effective. He doesn't seem to have much wear and tear on his joints like larratt, who has his calcified elbow with limited range of motion. However, I can't find any information on Bagent and his Training techniques.
Iairon its hard to balance it out though , side pressure puts a very demanding stress of the internal rotation which is hard to duplicate for the external.
You bring up an interesting point. If you say two guys have a 20 year armwrestling career, but how long were they physically pulling in matches. Just in competition Bagent has probably been pulling 1/4 as long as Larratt, because he ends matches quickly and concedes quicker if he is in a bad position.
Its kool AF to have a strong hand when most ppl rely on the biceps i trained immensely on my grip strength(left hand) after i ruptured my pinky flexor tendon on my right hand and my left hand has almost 150lb grip strength now.(my healthy hand) the average male is stated to be at 72.5lbs...thats INSANE lol now that im almost fully recovered,i hope and pray i can get my right hand to even 120lbs would make me happy
I would think there would be advantages to both using your fingers and palm to hold on, and I think tension in the fingers can make them stronger as well as extensors in the wrist.
According to Wolfes law your fingers can get stronger (ie. bone density or a build up of callus making fingers thicker), but Travis is right there is no such thing as strong fingers. There are no muscles in the fingers to get stronger. All your fingers are controlled by muscles in the hand and forearm.
Pretty outstanding. Can we pair this with a rock-climber's take on grip strength (as they would favour strong fingers)? Just so we can see both sides, and then apply either were applicable.
Travis, Thanks for sharing your knowledge to help others!! When working-out I now use my hands not my fingers. It didn't realize how weak my hand was, my forearms were on fire!!!
He should walk around gyms near the pullup bars telling people "put it in your haaaand!" He did drop some serious science in this video though. People don't know this stuff. Holding something with your fingers is different than holding something "in your haaand."
His advice makes sense, but how would you deal with the flesh of the palm being crushed up painfully into the fingers and causing callouses/torn callouses?
Think about deadlifting big weight. You don't hold the bar in your fingers. The bar digs into hopefully callus and your palm. This is similar to that you wrap your fingers around
I kinda have to hold the barbell in my fingers, because I have very small hands. It sucks and gripping strength has always been a limiting factor for me.
grip strength... go buy a pair of metal snips and find a piece of old sheet metal and start cutting. That or carry around cinder blocks in your finger tips. try other methods. that stuff a make man out of ya.
So for all the gripsters/arm wrestlers/anyone who took his advice, which do you find you have more strength in? Grabbing with the hands or the fingers?
false grip is great for elite arm wrestling where you let the ref bring you to center and dont let your opponent pressure up into you hand ( a no / minimal back pressure start) takes a lot of time to perfect the feel and timing of it! Need to put in a lot of table time to make it work :)
Your grip is stronger when you put weight in your fingers and not in your hands test it with your fingers and put it above your callouses or in your palm and try to squeeze "[that will only increase] "Finger strength" aka "Forearm strength" aka "grip strength" ?
This is the smartest Travis I've seen. Left handed monster.
Both arms monster (specifically left tho)
Cheater

Wow! Travis is really good with explanations
lmao this comment made me laugh because he was really good explaining this making It look so easy based on his voice
Y a he is
for any crossfiter stop doing crossfit

This dude is great for the sport... And has done so much to bring light to it
I saw this video many years ago.
But after all these years of training, it was only recently that I realized...this is gold.
I'm pretty sure Travis came out of the womb with sweatpants on.
He did
That's some badass training advice Travis! Wisdom from a true pro. Thanks!
Enjoyed meeting Travis in person in Prescott, AZ. Very personable, engaging, and full of vitality.
He looks like Stifler on steroids.
Not just looks, but personality too
Dude stiffler is jacked way more than Travis . Lmao.

He was favorite. Miss that show.
Travis is the best in breaking down technique that I have seen in Arm Wrestling
Women use their fingers, men use their hands...
+Corolex
well played well played
It's actually the opposite if you know what you're doing. ;)
Antreas zeusson I was joking, it's a sexual innuendo.
Ellen Degeneres gave that a thumbs up, I heard. She knows.
Bois use their fingers me use their hands
In my 33yrs in 4mins Travis has just shown me how to use my grip properly!! Lol
Over a decade later, and folks still don’t get it…
Wow!!! That's a great advice. Never thought of that before.... Thank u pal👍
Exactly what I was thinking,!!
as much as I'd like to hate him in competitions and some interviews for the sheer cockiness, he is actually a really good teacher. his calm side was showed in "pulling John" too, he a cool dude
Around this time, he was #1 in world left arm and #5 right arm.
Travis is such a strong beast , I don't know how John was able to beat him in his career

Archibald Doogan at the A-1 right ?
There is a 30 minutes video of him on youtube.
Archibald Doogan I think it's a lot to do with Alexei is a top roll 100% of the time and Travis is a hook and or high hook fighter so different techniques.different training style
Travis trained with our soccer team in college. The guy is awesome. Saw him snatch a 100 pound DB like it was nothing.
You know, I was never a fan of travis because of his lack of respect before, but he really looks like he's maturing. Really really good for him :) He's great :)
He is a showman stupid. He was allways doing mindgames with his opponent.
Psychological effect - stupid? Wait- which one is stupid again??

Since I started training false grip on a super fat bar my wrists and joints have been doing much better
What an amazing teacher. Wow.
Travis Bagent is really good at this coaching and explaining...
is anyone else fascinated by the way he says "in your hand"
yes
Best advise ever told by an armwrestler

Well done. Another solid advice from legend
That was actually really insightful..gonna start holding things with my hand instead of all the pressure on my fingers..
Charisma and intelligence....great competitor
Travis , ur a beast , I DEFINITELY give u that
Great video! Learned alot!
you would definitely be a great teacher. well explained
Do these holds help build up the forearms?

they dont ,what the fuck, fingers are just bones and tendons, the muscles controlling fingers lie in the forearm,
Awesome wear out move to wait for your opponent to sort of take advantage of a week moment.

Wow great video!!!
Very good advice all these guys are beast's.
"No such thing as strong fingers"? He needs to meet Alex Honnold.
alex honnold weights 100 pounds ( not taking anything away from him)
well that was a really good point

We need to hold on the hand or in the finger?
Sorry I am not English, I am trying to understand
GREAT TIP⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The beast himself!
What if you can’t fully bend your DIP joint of your right index finger anymore?
would this apply to doing a chinup bar hang?
Think about deadlifting big weight. You don't hold the bar in your fingers. The bar digs into hopefully callus and your palm. This is similar to that you wrap your fingers around
I kinda have to hold the barbell in my fingers, because I have very small hands. It sucks and gripping strength has always been a limiting factor for me.

Matt J
Thanks alot, I'll do that. I really hate my hands, they are small and kinda thin, I'm not a weak guy but I need thicker hands for sure.
Matt J I think experts hold the bar in their fingers because that way you can start higher and therefore pull more weight.
Now that I you call school!!
this is fucking genius
So for all the gripsters/arm wrestlers/anyone who took his advice, which do you find you have more strength in? Grabbing with the hands or the fingers?
Does it build forearm muscles too?
