Dear old slam doors :) they may have been clanky and a bit creaky but they had comfortable seats, like sofas. I remember Connex bringing in the first electrostars to the Dover/Ramsgate line. They were so new and shiny
And, contrary to popular belief, the slam-door trains loaded and unloaded far quicker than modern power-door stock. Particularly the suburban sets - where you had a door to every seating bay, you could get people on and off very quickly. With power door stock, just the door opening and closing sequence takes 30 seconds, because there are less doors everyone is funnelled down to two doors on each car, and at a busy station it can take 90 seconds for everyone to get on and off. I do miss the noise as well!!

When it come to railways Britain got there first, but now we’re the worst! How can that be possible? Quite simple; government support has gradually been reduced over the years. This was one of Maggie Thatcher’s major faults. She was never seen getting on or off a train, nor was she ever seen to promote them. Just imagine if billions had been invested instead of being wasted on unnecessary road schemes that as soon as you build them they clog up! The one sure way to bust road congestion is to upgrade and build new railways. British passenger railways have never been run successfully, going right back to the onset in the 1800s. The fact is, a comprehensive and well maintained rail service will never turn a profit, so if a quality and affordable service is wanted (and I would suggest that it is), then obviously private companies will never be able to meet those requirements. The only way that could happen is for national Government to accept that railways are a cost to the country and shoulder the financial burden. In other words, nationalisation - and my personal politics is right of centre. The view would have to be that rail transport is integral to industry and commerce, and so the cost would be offset by a resulting growing economy through better efficiency of moving people and freight. There is also an environmental and moral requirement to provide a service that is fit for purpose.

If prices rise too high, and there is a modal shift away from rail, yes, there will be increased congestion, especially around the major cities. However, if you live nowhere near a rail line, that wouldn't be an issue for you locally, and you may question why you should contribute towards the cost of the rail network when it doesn't serve you're area. Even now, with fares rising to shift the burden of cost to the user, the rail network still gets huge subsidies, especially into the infrastructure through Network Rail.

In the decades since this film was first made, the U.K. railways have got worse not better, even since the failure of HS2 - at this point, the ONLY solution is to invite in an external body from the CCP, Japan or Taiwan and to change the law to legally give them complete and direct control of the U.K. railways, with no interference of any kind whatsoever being permitted and to totally ban all trade union membership, making all strikes and industrial actions illegal, as we simply have got to change the whole culture that has held the U.K. railways back for decades, through a series of tough and draconian laws focused on improving the railways and ending privatisation, which simply does not work, aside from some (very rare) exceptions - in the last 30 years alone, we have seen fares go up, with standard of service go down, with constant disruptions and industrial actions and it is frankly unacceptable - deliberate mismanagement and wastage has caused the failure of HS2 and many other U.K. rail improvement projects to a stage where very drastic action is now required to get the U.K. railways up to acceptable international standards as the current status of the U.K. railways is abysmal and has no room for improvement - a case in point, aside from HS2 is the high speed rail tunnel under the Irish Sea from Holyhead to Dublin, but because of deliberate mismanagement and wastage it has been constantly suspended and put on hold due to lack of funding

That's why we need to make employers pay a minimum wage of £8.72 per hour. If you can't pay your staff at least £11 per hour then you shouldn't even be in buisness. Evelyn everyone uses goods and services that will have travelled over the motorway network, and the cost of roads is more than covered by vehicle and fuel tax. The argument isn't the same.

If prices rise too high, and there is a modal shift away from rail, yes, there will be increased congestion, especially around the major cities. However, if you live nowhere near a rail line, that wouldn't be an issue for you locally, and you may question why you should contribute towards the cost of the rail network when it doesn't serve you're area.
Even now, with fares rising to shift the burden of cost to the user, the rail network still gets huge subsidies, especially into the infrastructure through Network Rail.

@@onlinefriend3889 they don’t - tax revenue from motorists (fuel duty, Road/vehicle tax, VAT on fuel, car sales and repairs) is far higher than the road building and maintenance budgets.
In the decades since this film was first made, the U.K. railways have got worse not better, even since the failure of HS2 - at this point, the ONLY solution is to invite in an external body from the CCP, Japan or Taiwan and to change the law to legally give them complete and direct control of the U.K. railways, with no interference of any kind whatsoever being permitted and to totally ban all trade union membership, making all strikes and industrial actions illegal, as we simply have got to change the whole culture that has held the U.K. railways back for decades, through a series of tough and draconian laws focused on improving the railways and ending privatisation, which simply does not work, aside from some (very rare) exceptions - in the last 30 years alone, we have seen fares go up, with standard of service go down, with constant disruptions and industrial actions and it is frankly unacceptable - deliberate mismanagement and wastage has caused the failure of HS2 and many other U.K. rail improvement projects to a stage where very drastic action is now required to get the U.K. railways up to acceptable international standards as the current status of the U.K. railways is abysmal and has no room for improvement - a case in point, aside from HS2 is the high speed rail tunnel under the Irish Sea from Holyhead to Dublin, but because of deliberate mismanagement and wastage it has been constantly suspended and put on hold due to lack of funding
