Led Zeppelin got their name from Keith Moon.. drummer with The Who. He is reported to have told Jimmy Page that Jimmy's new band would go down..'like a lead balloon'. This tale has been very well reported in many books.

Exactly. And they changed lead to led, so people didn't pronounce it as leed.

Yes..,,except that it was uttered about a possible band made up of Moon, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, and John Paul Jones or John Entwhistle….They were jamming and there was idle chatter about them forming a band together. Moon Didnt make the comment about the actual lineup of what became Led Zeppelin. . Jimmy just loved the name and kept it in his back pocket for future use.

This song is about the Viking invasions of Great Britain over 1,000 years ago. Lead singer: Robert Plant, guitarist: Jimmy Page, Bass and Keyboard: John Paul Jones, and Drums: John Bonham (RIP). Four of the most talented musicians ever to grace rock music. Their influences were, well, a lot of things. Black American Blues, folk music, rock, et al. They can't really be tied to one genre as they are so versatile, and a true force of nature.

As part of the 'Yardbirds' package, Page acquired the services of Peter Grant, as manager. Grant was a 6' 5" 300lb former fairground wrestler, who had also worked around many of the original rock 'n' roll package tours, and witnessed how the artists were often screwed over by the management /promoters. Often, they would grab 90% of the take, & the artists & everybody else scrabbled for whatever was left over.
Peter Grant handled ALL negotiations with record companies & promoters. He left the artists to do what they did, make music. He was the first to TELL promoters that the band took 90%, the promoter 10 - " Do you want my band to play, or not? ". He was the same with record companies. He told them WHEN the band had something worth releasing, and what it would be. No single release[?] - not his problem. Even the album packaging was down to them, hence the fourth album, which has no identifying marks, just the 4 runic symbols.

to clarify the singer is Robert Plant, the guitarist producer and founding member is jimmy Page , the drummer is John Bonham and the bass and keys player is john Paul Jones. They did not have a record company for the first album Page and jones funded it so consequently they had total control of everything incluing content and artwork and the name. Jimmy page had experienced the difficulties of management/ record company forcing his previous band the yardbirds to release commercial singles so he avoided that and by the time they signed with Atlantic for the second album they were so successful they could dictate terms and that included not releasing any singles. They formed Swansong later. Peter grant the manager was the strong arm but Jimmy Page was the visionary and they were all intelligent and musical geniuses . This song is about the viking invasion of the british isles because Robert Plant is interested in British History hence it becomes the theme for thor , but there were no marvel movies when they wrote it. If you want to know about the band the best thing to watch is it might get loud which is a 90 min documentary about 3 guitarists Jimmy Page , the edge from u2 and Jack white for the white stripes. Each one gives their own back story and then they get together and jam. There is no substitute for hearing the led Zeppelin back story from Jimmy Page. and something magical happened when those 3 got together. If you are going to watch it make sure you know the songs Whole lotta love , Kashmir , In my time of Dying and when the levee breaks to get the most out of it .

Actually Jimmy Page suggested to Keith Moon & a couple other band guys, that they should get together & form a band. Keith Moon said it would go down like a Led Ballon. When Page got Led Zeppelin together, after touring as The New Yardbirds, Page asked Keith of he could use the Name Led Zeppelin. The Immigrant Song is about Vikings, after the Band went to Iceland, they were interested in the Viking invasions especially into England. Yes it’s been used in several movies, funny thing is, it really was written as a joke but is very popular. Early on Immigrant Song was the opening song to many concerts, later Rock & Roll became their opening song, both were to get the fans enthusiastic.

Peter Grant, who was Led Zeppelin's manager, and Jimmy Page negotiated a contract with Atlantic records that not only gave them a record-breaking advance, but also gave the band nearly full creative control of their music. Page produced their records, so they sounded exactly the way he wanted them. They also had control over the album artwork. Where they did have to compromise was in the release of singles. Page wanted the music to be experienced as albums and of course Atlantic wanted hits. A few songs were released as singles but not in the quantity the record company would have preferred. Led Zeppelin also changed the way bands were paid for their concerts, for which many bands took a loss. Zeppelin were well paid for their shows.

There is an expression in English that something that fails badly "goes down like a lead ballon" ( I don't know if its used in the USA ) Someone said the band would go down "like a lead ballon" and they dropped the a from lead and replaced ballon with Zeppelin which is the airship used as their logo.

Before LZ formed, Jimmy Page was in a band called the Yardbirds. He was thinking about forming his own new band. He went into a rehearsal studio with Keith Moon & John Entwistle of The Who, who were getting a bit tired of Pete Townsend & Roger Daltrey. At some point, Moon quipped that if anyone from The Who or 'management' found out, it would go down like a lead Zeppelin [ ie a lead balloon ]. That new band never happened, but Page filed away the name, for later use.
Before long, the band 'The Yardbirds' basically imploded, over issues including drug use, 'creative tension', fatigue etc. Page was left with the name, catalogue, but also concert commitments, so had to form his new band in a hurry. He approached another well known session bass player called John-Paul Jones. Page had a long career as a session guitarist around London. For a singer, he approached first Terry Reid, who declined, & Steve Marriott, for whom other people 'declined' on his behalf. He was advised to see a new young singer in the Midlands of England, called Robert Plant. He was in a band, which also featured one of the best drummers around, called John Bonham, and they basically came as a package.
At first, the performed as 'The New Yardbirds', to complete the contract obligations of the old band. Then , they changed the name, dropping the 'a'. So, Led Zeppelin was formed, and the rest is history

One thing that emerged from that original rehearsal is a track called 'Back's Bolero', which surfaced on a Jeff Beck album. Beck & Page had both been involved in The Yardbirds.

you are right in the fact that Zeppelin was a company building airships in Germany. They used hydrogen as the gas to fill the airships....what could go wrong? It infamously went wrong with the Hindenburg which burst into flames as it landed, leaving an American reporter to comment 'oh the humanity'...surprisingly, people actually survived the crash....Led 'Zeppelin as a group got into trouble for using the name by the Zeppelin family, who didn't want to be associated with the group

Bad Co was the first group signed.

Keith Moon from The WHO joked to Jimmy Page that his new band would go down like a lead balloon. Page was considering naming the band Lead Balloon but eventually settled for Led Zeppelin - they removed the a from lead as they thought it would cause confusion with pronunciation

The Who drummer, Keith moon suggested the super group that would become Led Zeppelin would go down like a lead balloon.
Led is not spelt Lead as their manager thought that Americans would pronounce lead as leed.
In the UK apart from the metal lead as in a dog leash is known as a lead. If people saw the name written before they heard it said, they might easily assume that it was pronounced 'leed' (as in the verb) rather than 'led' (as in the metal).
    Google:
The newly formed group finished the obligatory concert schedule of the Yardbirds, but then went on to record their first self-titled debut album under their new name, Led Zeppelin. The name came from a comment made by Keith Moon of The Who, who once said the band would go down like a lead balloon.
If people saw the name written before they heard it said, they might easily assume that it was pronounced 'leed' (as in the verb) rather than 'led' (as in the metal).

This is live footage from the 72-world tour ... The venue in this video is the Fairgrounds in Sydney, Australia ... The sound is from the Long Beach, CA or LA gigs later on in the same tour. The footage is likely bootleg, acquired by the band, (Jimmy) later on and edited as best they could to sync with the sound. Yes to most of the answers on the band's name found below. The truth is likely pieces of all the versions of the story given. They were legally challenged by a former Yardbird on using "The New Yardbirds" after completing the tour contracts that remained when they formed. (Thank God for that!) They returned to England and recorded the 1st album in 36 hrs (or less) over a 5-7-day period, finishing in early Oct,68. Peter Grant shopped the album, and they signed with Atlantic in Dec, 68 with the Album dropping in Jan, 69.

LZ never took directions from a publicist or consultant on how to dress or wear their hair. Peter Grant was their manager and no one told them what to do or he would beat them. No one ever chose their album covers. They fought that battle with record companies and insisted on the covers they designed. Read Hammer of the Gods if you want the real story.

Also I remember hearing the song by Led Zepp " In My Time of Dyin " during my drug years and made me think about death and Jesus. Then a hippy friend that dug Jesus told me more of Jesus love and forgiveness and how I could also know Jesus love. So in 1981 I cried out to Jesus and wow man He came into my life and I had and have so much joy and peace and now know that through Jesus when I die I will be with Him in Heaven. Hey Jesus loves each of you also and yall can know Him if you are at all open. Just cry out to Him and a good question to ask yourself if you were to die today would you go to heaven ? And if yes why ? To find out more please read the Gospel of John in the Bible or check out the movie on RUclips. 😀
