Welcome? What's for dinner? What can we afford to eat on a budget? Can we healthily on a low income? Can we eat well when food is so expensive?
brillant meals! Thank you Jane Mike and Puppies.
Whoever says frugal people don't eat well should come and check this out! Bravo on the beautiful platings, Jane! Seeing pretty plating has been a sought-after hobby of mine. You are a good cook! Thank you for sharing! 😋🥰
Thank you so much!
Eating outside makes the food taste even better. Our grandchildren looked forward to sunny days, with a combination of breakfast and lunch under the apple tree (so lovely when in bloom and thousands of bees buzzing above us). Thanks for triggering that memory. The meal today is what is called on the east coast of Canada, "Jigg's Dinner." Boil a smoked ham, add whole peeled potatoes, whole carrots, quartered rutabaga, large chunks of cabbage and whole onion. Cover it with water and let it cook until all is tender. Before serving, I use some of the liquid for a sauce and pour that over the vegetables. I expect there will be leftovers, unless someone joins us.
That sounds fantastic
I see similarities in how you use up ingredients on hand. I saw this with the cabbage salad. When I have something that needs used I have it show up on our plates over and over until we’ve consumed it. The food looks delicious. Being in the US, especially growing up in Southern California near the Mexico border, we were very influenced by Mexican cuisine. So many of our “bits” meals are a form of taco. Instead of pie crust and breads we use a corn tortilla and fill it with bits. Instead of gravy we use fresh salsa. We use tomato, onion, jalapeños, lime, garlic cilantro. Everything different yet exactly the same goals
Something out of nothing is what my family has named it. Always yummy and nutritious even if it is less than traditional for many outside the area we grew up.
That all sounds fabulous to me
Brilliant meals ! Thank you for great meal ideas. Thank you Jane Mike and Puppies.
Thanks so much for your comment
Thanks for watching
I enjoy how the British use the simple word "bits" to mean a variety of things. "Picky bits"sounds much more appetizing than "leftovers" here in the U.S.😅
We also say 'picky tea' tea being an evening meal
In slang
Brilliant meals! Thank you for great meal ideas. Thank you Jane Mike and Puppies
Thanks you so much
My mother used to make frikadellen. All the meals look wonderful!
They were. Thanks for watching
Nothing wrong with having a pre-made salad or meal especially if it saves you from eating out.
I absolutely agree.
Thank you so much for the weekly menu videos they are so helpful. Sometimes my creativity wanes on menu planning...so nice to see what others are eating.😊
I'm so glad! I often just throw what I have together when we don't want what is on the plan
Beautiful plating, Jane! You’re an inspiration. ❤
That's so kind
I often make Wasabi Coleslaw . It has a 'slight" tang but changes up the coleslaw for something a little bit different. I start by mixing 2 T of cider vinegar and mayonnaise together and add a good "squirt" of wasabi, then just alter the dressing to be able to mix through all the coleslaw. The good thing about wasabi, is the taste does not linger which is good🙂
Yummy
Thank you for sharing meal ideas, beautiful presentation❤❤❤❤❤
Thanks so much for your comment
Great looking ( and tasting!) meals.
Now, I have found myself giggling over the phrase, " picky bits". It was new to me and fun to say.
If you're British, you know 'picky bits'
I'm not British but I like the phrase "Picky bits" so it will be incorporated into my food vocabulary. LOL
All looks delicious! Love coleslaw and also potato salad in warmer weather.
Me too!!
I wish you owned a bed & breakfast that included all these delicious meals. I’d gladly pay to visit.
Sorry my computer acting crazy AGAIN !
My mother would call this if it there you can have it.Instead of picky bit.
You seem very hard working and creative, with that practical, very British exterior. I'm from the southern U.S., and you remind me of my mother's side of the family, who originally came from GB. Solid people who know how to solve problems 😊
Cool, thanks. We Brits pride ourselves in our stoicism. There's never any point moaning. We just get on with it.
Thank you so much for your videos. The ingredients for the coleslaw are on my shopping list. Since I discovered your channel, I'm much more.mimdful when I do my grocery shopping. Also, last timeI did my shop, there was a very good offer on quality felt tips so I have bought a packet and put away for September as I always find getting school.supplies such a big expense then.
Thanks
Congrats for reaching 33k!, great video as usual. Everything looks delicious!
Thank you so much!!
The menu at our place this week:
Mac and cheese with broccoli
Chicken, rice and pumpkin
Roast chicken, roast vegetables and peas
Burgers
Tacos
Zucchini slice and salad
Leftovers
Delicious 😋
Great video some new inspiration for frugal meals. Thank you Jane and Mike are a real inspiration to us. We try not to eat out too often too but the biggest simple adjustment we’ve made is packing a flask of hot tea with us with some biscuits when we go to our nearest town to shop. We live by the med and stop on the way home to enjoy the view. We save ourselves at least €6 and find it far more relaxing than sitting in a noisy Greek cafe drinking weak Liptons tea 🤣
You're doing great
We frugal folks sure do eat well. Slow food is so much better for you than the fast foods pushed here in the US. Great recipes 👌 😋.
Thanks so much
It is going to be hot here with temps in the 80's. On the menu is bratwurst in beer and onions and grilled with buns for two and a half meals. Sides can be baked beans or homemade potato salad with eggs, radishes and celery. Tacos with shredded cheese, sour cream, lettuce and tomatoes with taco meat and hard corn shells. I will make some sun brewed ice tea. Hamburger BBQ on buns with homemade cole slaw. You do a lovely job of preparing healthy food.
Thanks
i am a new subsciber and omg you have the cutest fluff balls, i have 2 dogs myself 1 of which is 90 percent blind since birth hes going to be 7 in september😊
Thanks for subbing!
lOVE YOUR CHANNEL, COULD YOU PLEASE FEATURE SOME VEGAN RECIPES / tHANKS
Probably not. We're meat eaters. Plenty of lovely vegan channels out there.
Yummy yummy. All round to yours for lunch!! 😂😂😂 ❤❤❤ xxx
Hi Jane we live in Italy think you are very nice Person, love the tips
Oh thank you! That's so kind.
Delicious nutritional meals jane😊
Looks delicious! I love to make coleslaw and potato salad in warmer weather and we are now getting some salads in the greenhouse.
We're looking forward to homegrown salad too
Everything looks delicious. We love eating salads in the warm weather. Sometimes I'll add some tuna or chicken chunks to make it more filling. Thank you for sharing your time and ideas 😊.
Thank you
Lovely meals x
Thank you 😋
Your food is always beautiful! Cookbook pretty👍🏻
Thank you so much 😊
Hi Jane.
Your meals look great!!
Have you considered putting together a Frugal Cooking, cookbook?
Perhaps one online, for a fee.
I really enjoyed this video. They are inspiring and so colourful.I’ve lost the habit of putting together a salad on a regular basis. My grandson aged 14 loves coleslaw so I will give this ago. Also trying to add variety to our diet. This video came at just the right time. Thank you. Love to see your little dogs xx
Thanks so much
Great meals for the week. The meat sauce with pasta, very nice.😊
Menu planning is simple, do a quick check of the fridge and pantry, then prepare and use what you have.👍
Fixing your own food is far more budget friendly and takes little time, also you know what is the dish✔️🇦🇺
Enjoy lunch in the garden 🪴 with the doggies.
Thank you Jane and Mike for another great video.
Thanks for the tips!
Enjoyed your video showing us delicious yet reasonable meals because you cook from scratch and make your own dishes when possible. Another great video from you both 👌
Thanks 😊
Some lovely meals . After shopping today I sat down with my receipt and costed out all the food. This will allow me follow your lead and cost out my main meals.
I hope it helps
I have never tried to cost out individual meals but as food prices continue to rise it would be good to know the actual cost of each meal. I cook from scratch and have a mix of meat and meat free meals.
Omg your food is making me hungry all of these ideas are priceless thank you thank you thank you 🙏🏾
Thanks to everyone who watches
Thanks Jane. It's so interesting seeing what other people eat.
Here in Australia we are moving into Winter and comfort food. I made sausage rolls plus chicken and vegetable soup yesterday.
We say cold weather is soup weather. It warms you up and makes it easy to get plenty of vegetables as part of your meal.
By the way, I always add a little grated apple to my coleslaw ( a tip from a friend who is Dutch).
Love to you, Mike and the doggies. ❤
Wonderful!
Thank you Jane for sharing your delicious meals! I appreciate all the vegetables that you prepare! I will definitely be trying your coleslaw recipe! I love coleslaw!

Glad it was helpful!
Great meal Jane.
Thanks so much
I almost forgot family I’ve never eaten lentils before and this week while shopping at my local Walmart they had these microwave pouches of lentils just 4 ingredients on the back of the package on clearance for $1 so I picked up a pouch I added 1/2 of the lentils to some broccoli 🥦 cheese soup and omg I’ve been missing out on some fantastic foods because I’ve always thought they were too complicated to cook and too expensive to buy 🤷🏽♀️you all have helped me keep my eyes open and not be in a rush when I shop which now makes grocery shopping a lot more enjoyable for me like a scavenger hunt 👍🏾😉THANKS ❤
Yummy
Hi Jane, informative & fun as usual, thank you. As a Lancastrian born, can I say if you're feeling 'posh' as we would say in those parts, you can use the " best end of neck"(!) on the bone like cutlets, stood up in a 'welsh lady hat' - a deep stoneware pot & cooked in the bottom of the range (often on washing day). I vaguely remember metal plate lid being sealed on with a thick flour &water paste to keep the moisture & flavour in before the potatoes was added for the last 1/2 hour (ISH). I've also had it topped with suet dumplings instead of potatoes - presumably for a change- or because we'd run out!. I can remember eating an extra top layer of dumplings (I e.not sitting in the gravy with golden syrup & custard as a dessert.
Oh yum! All of it!
We eat very well at home. We get everything on sale. Soup, enchiladas, chicken pot pie, hamburgers and fries, fish sandwich with mashed potatoes and canned spaghetti. Tomorrow will be shrimp tacos and Sunday dinner is Italian sausage, pasta and garlic bread with something sweet for dessert. See you Sunday!!
Sounds great!
Dinner tonight was Polish sausage cut into circles, potato salad, baked beans and a few potato chips. For dessert we had strawberry shortcakes using strawberries I had frozen last year. We had enough leftovers for my husband's dinner tomorrow (I will be working) and for me to have beans on toast for breakfast tomorrow. I was introduced to mache/lamb's lettuce by a friend in Germany this winter. I ordered seeds and will be planting them this fall. It's too hot and humid to grow lettuce in the summer here. I like seeing what you prepare for meals.
Thanks so much
Yummy looking meals! Thank you for sharing.
Coming into cooler weather here with our first frost expected tomorrow. More soups on our menu plan now. Yummy.
Sounds great!
Great video Jane and Mike
Thanks so much
Dear Jane&Michael,i love your affectionately called picky bits. We call our bits of food ingredients dabs of this and dabs of that! Either way it turns into a meal to fill our hollow and we don't waste a thing in the process!👍
Love that!
I love your tip from another video to eat seasonally. I’ve been leaning in to this and it’s paying off. I buy sale seasonal items and can quite a bit. Frugality is so fun because there’s always something new to learn. We eat healthy food at home and I google different recipes so we aren’t bored. Bon appetit, Jane and Mike!
And to you too
Everything looked delicious.❤
Enjoyed the video as usual!
