I think this is one of the most asked questions I get right after "why do you say solder wrong" haha I'm going to share this on my community tab. Thanks for all the great info 😊👍
Great video Dan. I would like to suggest that creators have at least one or two high quality, items for sale with properly high prices on their site or in their booth. Then have the rest of your items be competitively priced. People will see the high priced items, and think that the lower prices items are a great deal because they get to buy from the same artist.
Paul Buckel Jr yeah definitely agree there. The same goes for online sales. In any product line it’s good to have 1-2 really high priced items and 2-3 lower priced items so that the mid ranged products seem more attractive. That really works too!
Thank you so much for posting this video! This is something I have always struggled with over the past decade of metalworking- I always just estimate prices and this video has laid it out so much more clearly for me than anyone else has been able to before! It’s very much appreciated!!✨✨✨
Thank you! It’s not totally exact (as has been pointed out in the comments lol) but as long as you cover costs, pay yourself a wage and make a profit for the biz without lowballing the market then you’re golden 😁👍🏽.
Definitely one of the most informative, and much needed videos I've ever watched on here (RUclips). Thanks for the info. Loved the analogy as well, as it made the point crystal clear. :)
@@ZebranoWoodCraft Don't sell your analogy short. It is an excellent one, and makes the point very well and makes absolute sense. If the video consisted of JUST that analogy and nothing else, it STILL would have been a good piece of information and therefore a valuable aid. It definitely ISN'T a "stupid analogy." Well done ...and I don't do ego stroking. I tend to tell it like it is ...like it is in my opinion, anyway. :)
@@ZebranoWoodCraft "A" beer, or "some BEERS?" I can put away a lot of them you know. Amber nectar (lager) or Black harp (Guinness), I don't mind either. They caress and lubricate my throat equally well. I just might have to take you up on your offer, as Birmingham isn't exactly a million miles from... I forget your address now without looking at my contacts list. Let's just say "where you're at" for now, lol. . :D
Cheers dude! It’s easier for businesses who mass produce items and can say for sure how much time something will take to create, but when you’re a skull carving master who can’t rush the work then it must be tricky!! I think you price very reasonably for what you do, and it allows you to live a happy life 😁. Though I’m sure nobody has ever complained about having too much money lol. How’s the YouTubing going man?
Zebrano Wood Craft slowwwwwww lol!!! It will take alot of work and consistent content to build it up. Like everything else I suppose.... i have some new ideas brewing but i guess it won’t happen overnight lol!!
Leroys Woodentattoos yeah it’s taken me years to build a small (but awesome) audience. There are some channels who get lucky and the algorithm picks up a few of their videos and they get huge real quick. I think the key is consistency and making content that will help, inspire or entertain someone!
I haven't gotten too far into the video yet so, maybe this is explained later but, when you are including your material costs and you are adding in things like glue and sandpaper, what are you charging? I mean, do you charge for a sheet of sandpaper even though you may use less than a quarter of a sheet? A bottle of CA when you might be using an eighth? This is what really confuses me. I want to get my materials back but I don't want to over charge. Having said that, I also would rather be making things rather than figuring out the price of an 1/8th of a sheet of sandpaper or 30 drops of glue. Can you point me in a direction?
Haha I know what you mean, the small sundries like that can be annoying and nobody wants to get bogged down with silly details. I just estimate that and add on a £3-4 just to cover the costs. The main things to concentrate on are the expensive supplies like if you’re using gold, or if you’re only paying yourself £2 per hour.
How much should i price my hand crafted bentwood rings ? 100 pound ? I make bentwood rings using the no power tools technique from the video you made. It was.amazing so is this one.
10:10 Okay, these processes might be working well for you and yes! it is very good advice for us, but let's talk about math... You're wrong when you said that if you wanna get 265 after paying 10% to Etsy all that you need to do is add that 10% to the total you wanted. This is a very common mistake. Accordingly to you 265 + 26.5 = 291.5 so you're losing money right there. Etsy is gonna take 10% out of your price tag, from the total 291.5 - 29.15 = 262.35 is what you gonna keep to yourself and not 265. This is not the correct way you do this math. If you wanna get a certain amount of money, 265 in this case, AFTER 10% is being taken from a total you don't know yet, the X of this question, all that you have to do is divide the amount you wanna keep, 265 in your example, by 0.9, thus the correct total should be approximately 294.44 Now try to take 10% of the price tag 294.45 to see how much you gonna keep after paying Etsy... 265 !!!! 10:10
Haha yeah you got me there my math was obviously off and you are right. Thank you for the updated equation too 👍🏽😁. In my defence the Etsy fees vary quite a bit now and aren’t always 10% so it sort of averages out and still works well for me. Also I’ve factored in a great wage and a good profit margin so I’m not going to be too upset by losing £2.65. If anything I slightly overestimated my costs to absorb small mistakes like these so it’s not the type of thing that will put me out of business haha. It’s also probably a good idea to add a little extra in the profit margin too just to cover little things that you might have missed out. I guess the point was just to show how to cover costs, make a profit and pay yourself a wage without being a lowballing douche lol. You have a good point and thank you for pointing it out ... it’s a bit late for me to go back and re edit the video now so I’ll have to leave it 😂.
@@ZebranoWoodCraft lol No! Didn't mean to you to edit anything, you surely gave us such a precious guideline to help us price our handmade treasures and the profit margin you suggest is more than enough to cover my point. I love art and math so much that I used to say that "Art is the Math of the unpredictable". By the way, I'm learning a lot about the art of ring-making with you here on your channel, thank you!
Hi Zebrano. I have a question about cure times. Do you include cure times to your labor time. Say if your rings clear coat needs to sit and cure for an hour. Do you add that or not? Or do you only include the time of hands on work?
Hi mate yes I include that as labour. I use accelerator spray so the glue cures within 1 minute and in that time I’m hands on making sure it’s curing properly. Also for the Uv resin it’s still quite hands on. Plus you can be doing other workshop stuff while you wait (like cleaning up or whatever) 👍🏽
Just found your channel and I’m loving it. One question though how long do you wait after applying the activator for the glue before-applying a second coat Robbie
I recently started making my own metal rings with the support of my familly but I really don't know how to price them, I use a Lathe (so usefull) but kinda cheap material (cause I'm just starting and I wanna train on easier material, not damas for example) like alluminum, brass, CA glue for inlay with some stones of multiple type and lately some glow powder too but I feel like a ring cost me less than 10€ (I'm in France) and selling the ring for more than 60€ for example would feel wrong, it takes me about 4-5-6hours per rings so I'm paying myself 10€ per hours and that's not a lot at all but still more would seem too much here in France The minimum salary in France is about 10,5€ per hour btw, I'd like to know what you think about all that if you have the time, thank you very much and great video !
Hey man looks like you’ve been making some great stuff. You can either find a way to make rings much faster, put your prices up or both. At the end of the day you’re a craftsman, that’s worth more that a tenner an hour in my opinion! Alternatively develop a product range that’s made with more expensive/precious metals with elements added that not everyone can do. That way you stand out among the competition and you can charge much more. Otherwise you will always be working super long hours to make not much money.
@@ZebranoWoodCraft thank you very much I think I'll try yo work faster as I'm still new it should be possible and I'll also try more precious metals and other things like that with time (only problem is I haven't been able to find some seller in france and the shipment fee would kinda hurt if I buyed in the us or uk but I'm sure I'll find), thanks again for your reply and all your videos
