Though then-Governor Jimmy Carter established the Georgia Film Office in the early 1970’s, David O. Selznick really started all this in 1939, when he decided to host the world premiere of his epic “Gone With The Wind” not in Hollywood, but here in Atlanta at the Loew’s Grand theater; the entire cast, including Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh, and Olivia de Havilland, were there. Another premiere would follow at that same Loew’s Grand in 1961 to commemorate the Civil War Centennial (the theater was destroyed by fire in the late ‘70s and torn down for the Georgia-Pacific Tower). BUT…aren’t we forgetting Orlando, Florida? All during the ‘90s, tons of film and TV productions were done there as Disney and Universal had studio lots right on their theme parks; until Atlanta, they _were_ the Hollywood of the South.

Dude.... Where's Tyler Perry? I knew he was building the foundation for the industry in GA a decade ago. No joke should have been a big part of this vid
I officially entered the film industry back in the mid 90's. and even then the studios were looking to leave California to make the move to key east coast states. Back then, Atlanta Georgia was often the first pick, New York was another pick but did have its issues, as the very reasons for leaving California was due to high taxes and high costs. There was already a lot of location filming and in NY not to mention much of the business end of Hollywood was also situated in NY where their parent companies were headquartered. Montreal Canada was also a major draw. There was also the benefit of Broadway and theater work for actors. logistics was an issue for NY, building new large sound stages and the costs their in. The Carolina's and Georgia didn't have those issues. in fact it already had Turner and ESPN, along with a few others that proved the move to ATL was a promising idea along with tax incentives and plenty of great real estate. so what happened? The VFX boom of the 90's. Computer animation and vfx created a new generation of film making, and many of those tech career operations were smack dab in California. All these film ideas that sat in volts collecting dust could now be brought to life because computers dramatically reduced the cost and time for productions. And so the summer blockbusters came. each with newer and better levels of vfx. it brought in billions but also inflated the cost of living in California. extreme greed and the growth of silicon valley made California the place to be. a new bubble that seemingly would never pop. but it did, by the weight of its own greed and inflation. what was once a benefit in production had been manipulated into a burden of labor and ever climbing costs. Hollywood can no longer carry the expense to produce films in California, but you can only move to places that have both sources of skilled labor and actually facilities to make the transition. aka Georgia.
I first noticed how much filming took place in Georgia when I saw The Walking Dead being filmed there (back when TWD was good.) Also TNT has their "NBA on TNT" show in Atlanta which seemed odd 10+ years ago but now it's the norm to have everything filmed in GA.

Nah, thats Freedom Parkway and its never really that congested....now the downtown connecter which is below all those flyover bridges is most likely bumper to bumper traffic that ATL is known for.....

And a culture that is conducive to business. Many California residents and politicians openly despise capitalism and private business. Adding more taxes, fees, and regulations to those that are already burdened. Requiring diversity in upper management and on company boards, painful environmental regulations, poor policing etc. Many Californians are entitled and love to play the victim. Let these business go to where they are appreciated by people who want to work. Not sit on their ass collecting a UBI check.
This was mostly focused on Atlanta but everyone seem to have forgotten Savannah brought Hollywood to Georgia LONG before Atlanta was considered cool. Glory (Matthew Broderick, Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman) Forrest Gump, AND so many more.
Filming in Georgia has been going on since John Wayne and Burt Reynolds. Parts of the movie Green Berets was filmed in 1967 in Columbus Georgia. Deliverance was filmed in Rabun County in 1972. Tyler Perry was not even born in 1967 and might have been a small child in 1972. Yes Tyler Perry has done a fantastic job with film in Georgia however he is part of the big puzzle that makes up the film industry in Georgia. No one company has a monopoly and can take credit for the Georgia Film Industry. They are all contributors.
He’s the individual who’s done most for the film industry. The rest are all big orgs/companies.
It's crazy that Tyler perry started the movie movement to Georgia because it was cheaper and Hollywood studios weren't interested in what he was doing until he started to make serious money
And they never mention that because of their racism

We Georgians are proud!
I love this video. It's good to understand that this video was made to inform the politicians in Georgia so they don't screw it up with politics. Because with the unreal engine and LED panels, production will be able to be done anywhere. The new production ability is almost on par with when talkies came about. It is an industry disrupter.
Well if you're only white make you're good but non-white females and the rest of the colors of the rainbow 🌈 females and males they're out of the population that makeup this industry.
Great setup though. They did a good job setting up the whole 9 yards. How did Atlanta build a town and businesses to build shops there? Did the small business owners have to pickup paying the taxes that the studios had to pay?
I have to imagine that hurricanes present a challenge.

I'm excited about Atlanta taking over Hollywood, but I think it's a stretch to say that it doubles as LA or NY in regard to its skyline.
You'd be surprised what can be manipulated. Almost every Marvel movie in the past decade has filmed the bulk of their work here.
Most people watching won't even know what New York or Los Angeles look like unless you're a local or been there numerous times. Street signs, parking meter and traffic light designs are telltale signs of the location of the production. Suburbs and rural areas pretty much look the same everywhere.
I think that was mentioned about for Toronto, if you look closely.
@Moon Shine they just get the skyline footage of New York and then film the rest in Atlanta. That’s what suits did, but with Vancouver. They would constantly be showing images/videos of New York buildings or the skyline but every single thing was filmed in Vancouver, Canada
The avengers movies you watched did you ever question if it’s New York City or not? Atlanta downtown and midtown areas fill in the street level for the shots. For the skyline shot they will just do CG.
Smart moves. Georgia is really diversifying it's economic base.
