Georgia - It’s home to tall mountains and vast swamps. Farm after farm as well as one of the largest cities in the country. Long suffering some of the worst racism in the country, it played a central role in the Civil Rights Movement, and is today a center of Black art, music, and business. Georgia is a unique and fascinating state, and is the fourth place I will talk about in The US Explained, a 56 part series on every state, territory, and federal district in the country.

You left out chickens. Agriculturally the biggest export for Georgia is chickens. Something north of 60% of all the chickens consumed in the US are raised in Georgia.

I've lived in South Georgia my entire life and this is the first time I've seen a video about my state that actually covered the whole state and not just Atlanta. Great job I'm forward to more videos so I can learn about other states

The University of Georgia in Athens was the first public university in the country. Sherman missed Athens on his way to Savannah so you can still see some quite old (for the U.S.) buildings there. It’s a lovely campus and Athens is a great city to visit!

@honkeykong9592 UK is mixed. You can never predict what sort of summer we will have, whether it's a long dry summer or an unpredictable wet summer with sunny spells inbetween. The past 7 days, for example it's been hot and now its raining cooling right down.

I went to Georgia Southern (grew up in Statesboro) and currently live in Savannah. The gnats are no joke.

It's worth noting that Athens, GA is called the "Liverpool of the South" because of its tremendous influence on alternative rock music. Bands like R.E.M. and the B-52's originated there that revolutionized rock music. Over the last few decades, they've produced so many great bands like Neutral Milk Hotel, Widespread Panic, Drive-By Truckers, Harvey Milk, Elf Power, Of Montreal, etc.
A few months ago I was looking at GA’s northern border and I noticed that it went up in the northeastern part of the state. I found nothing about it. This channel kicks ass.

Kinda sucks that the state is pretty under rated, not many people seem to consider it very much. I did in fact move from Virginia to Georgia a long time ago, and I honestly don't think I would want to move anytime soon. When it has literally a perfect weather balance, and all four seasons. Also I really liked how you took your time to explain all about the state, that is some pretty good effort! 👌👌

They certainly don’t overlook the Atlanta area, which is in GA. This is evident in the steady population growth for the last 15-25 years.
at first I thought that this was going to be a "pander to Atlanta" overview; and then you mentioned Montgomery's Corner and the waterways and kept going...Appreciate it-Toccoa Ga.
As a foreigner to American culture and history myself, I'm already thoroughly enjoying this series and I look forward to seeing your detailed work in future episodes (especially New Mexico). Keep it up - you deserve far more attention!

@@MarchOnRome I beg to differ. I think GA is better than Tennessee. I know this is not fair, but first thing, yall got Memphis. But to be fair, the state is cool disregarding Memphis. GA is an economic center in the United States, and one of the economic centers of the south. To add on, Atlanta is THE biggest economic center in the Southeast. We also have an increasing entertainment scene(highlighted in the video) and Atlanta is one of the fastest growing cities in the Country, with more than 100,000 people moving to the Metro Area every year.(Probably not this year because of covid.) I could go on. Now Although I think GA is better than TN, I do love TN. Nashville, Chattanooga, and Knoxville are cool, with the beautiful smoky mountains in the east. Also Nashville, Although not on the same level as Atlanta, is becoming more prominent in the Southeast.
Georgia's western border is also the line between the central and eastern time zones.

Another cool feature - Lake Lanier. It's a manmade lake made by damming the Chattahoochee and Chestatee rivers. The city of Gainesville used to be down in that valley, and it was evacuated and flooded... Whenever we get a bad drought and the water level drops enough, ruins of the old city will start showing up. There's an old racing track arena that's been uncovered as well
There's also the Black town of Oscarville down there which was firebombed shortly before lake Lanier was created
Please consider also doing the Indigenous countries and current Indian Reservations. Like how the Cherokee went from Tsalaguwetiyi to their current Oklahoma and Eastern reservations. The reservations are integral parts of the United States, even if they are disputed territories (and plenty of countries remain unceded)
He said he was doing every state territory and administrative region. So maybe he will do them in the future.
@@acezszx I hope he does but I doubt he's going to do all 326! ;) But who knows... In this one he forgot to mention Etowah, one of the great Mississippian towns/ cities. A wonderful place!
I also like to mention that the Cherokee and other native nations were technically not living IN Georgia. Like the majority of reservations today, the native lands were not part of the states. Which means that sentences like "many native people in Georgia..." & "still inhabited much of the state" are actually incorrect. Georgia (as well as the federal government) claimed their lands, wanted their lands, made treaties to get their lands, fought over their lands, etc... All prove that they weren't seen as part of the state. Just like the US constitution (and many court cases) says.

As a life long Georgian, my home is Rome; Home to Berry College(the world largest college campus, and founded by Martha Berry) and the home of First Lady Edith Wilson (she is buried here is Myrtle Hill Cemetery in downtown Rome. Rome has 3 rivers, all flowing through the downtown district. Like Rome, Italy, (our namesake) we have seven hills. Our convention center is called The Forum.
I'd love to see you video updated to include Rome.

this is definitely one of my favorite episodes in your state series!! i feel like people often overlook georgia (really most of the south) but it’s history, politics, and culture is some of the most interesting of the US. this video taught me way more about america’s history and really just the whole country in general than i ever did in school 🥹 thank you so much for putting all your time into this series!!!!!

I am from Georgia, and to be honest, it was explained like a Georgian. I also note: Why did you not go into more detail about state parks and landmarks to visit? All the other Georgia explained video's I've watched all talk about Stone Mountain. But this one didn't. You also missed placed like Brasstown Bald and Cliudland Canyon. Nevertheless, It was really good!

Stone Mountain is a natural monument that seems to rise out of a rather flat region in Georgia. I grew up with no education into the realities of the massive engraved confederate generals that were considered heroes. I'm nearly 50 years old, and I have learned a lot about my home state as an adult who has come to realize that I was lied to by my parents and my grandparents were openly racist and hypocrites blessed by their white Jesus and the USA is God's gift to white Christians and the greatest country in the world. Sorry. I gotta contextually remind folks that I was the first generation in my extended family to attend integrated public school from kindergarten through graduation. That is important because since the early 90's and since then the number of private schools has doubled in the Columbus, GA metro (350,000 population) Columbus High School has been recognized as the #1 public high school in the entire state and the district designated CHS as a magnet academy. This has become a school that has an entrance exam and employs the top teachers and administrators to insure funds for the top technical services and science labs in the first and. oldest school building in the city. Decades of upgrades and additional modernized facilities, even parking lots and athletic facilities, primarily baseball. Obviously, Columbus High School enrolls the best students and hires the best qualified teachers at the expense of the 7 other high schools. The racial make up is 90% white. The MCSD is a failed public school district yet proudly advertised the many years of being home to the #1 public high school in Georgia and the most number of state Championship Baseball teams in the state. Hall of Fame Coach. The private schools are mostly faith based and embarrassingly 95% white. The tragedy of the Columbus metro area has a chance to be a leader in public education and diversity for all the families of the city. The cities racial divide is roughly 50/50. The other advantage is that Fort Moore (Benning) is the largest Army base in the US. Home to the Infantry and the Rangers all train there. The Army base is now the main training center for the new tanks and has miles of tank trails today. The farming and agriculture counties have a small public school for primarily the blacks and poor whites. The quality of education is getting worse for those students. And the state has been quietly allowing Charter schools or small Independent schools to operate unchecked and that's where the white kids go to school in rural counties. They have become their own segregated Independent school association. Which means that they compete within the Independent athletic division. The point is that I've been quite successful with my integrated experience in the public schools in Georgia that were diverse and I was a minority some grades and majority in other schools. We got along with one another because we lived in the same neighborhood. This must have been too much for the bigoted elders to handle. The public school district is basically segregated again. It must have been really frightening for our families to see us getting to know each other better and be friends. But I recall the negative effects of interracial dating had on white adults/parents and church elders. I understand that ending racism and prejudice are not going to happen anytime soon. My generation was probably better educated on slavery and the Civil Rights Movement in our public school with white teachers and black teachers. We discovered WOKE in conversation with your black friends especially by high school. My generation welcomed differences in music and style. Because our history books had pictures of hateful white kids yelling slurs at a little black girl in her nicest dress just trying to go inside the school. I am a Georgia man who had been lied to about racism by parents and elders as a child. The truth is that I knew it was wrong at the time. I would pay attention to the news and newspapers. We were the change in the 90's or at least we knew better. Movies were great sources of information about historical people and events. We had a different experience and another perspective. It was common sense and our families were not willing for positive change. I reckon we were getting along too fast. Because it is 2023 and over the last 30 years in my opinion racism is now raging in our country. White Supremacy is acceptable. If you would have told me that Donald Trump would be elected to the Presidency and cops would be killing unarmed black men with no consequences back in 96.I would have laughed it off, yall. Now I am afraid of what we have become as a society. 2017 Charlottesville, VA white supremacist walk through town with fuckin tiki torches chanting Nazi slogans! WTF! The white supremacy dumbass group of men returning with the BS fight college kids and one young coward ran his car into a crowd of people full speed and killed a young woman. The President would refuse to simply denounce the white supremacist actions! Cmon man! That was six years ago. White Supremacy has been escalated since then and Americans are not concerned about the racially motivated attacks on black folks on a dock trying to do his job. Young white men jumped his ass. The white supremacist are gunning black people down in Jacksonville and no one has the will or courage to just call out the truth about America's white supremacy being a dangerous group of terrorists in 2023. Fuck. Stone Mountain, GA was owned by the daughters of the confederacy and the KKK for a long time. They would burn crosses on the grounds surrounding the mountain and have meetings and shit that dumbass bigoted folks do. The KKK funded the daughters of the confederacy to etch their confederate generals into the large mountain of stone outside the city of Atlanta with the approval of a segregationist governor of Georgia. So I imagine that it would have been done by 1873 or close after the Civil War. Right. The etching of these heroes was completed in 1973. 1973.
I'm from NY but moved to Georgia and bought my first house in Peach County (Byron) when I was 20. Cool to see it mentioned within the first minute!
This series is so amazing and I can't wait for you to get to all of the states, we live in Oregon and have been considering moving to the Midwest or back East so these videos are really fun for informing our perceptions of places we have yet been ❤️
That's so cool. I hope this channel releases a new or updated video for each state every few years. I know that they'll be a good resource for me if I ever move out-of-state.

Not often that I hear anything about Georgia that includes my hometown of Brunswick, GA. I know native GA folks who don't know about Brunswick. This video is pretty thorough. I currently live in metro Atlanta nowadays.
By the way, Atlanta's metro population is actually over 6 million people.

Hey I have been watching/listening to your videos for a while and I wanted to say I really appreciate and love your videos.
West Point, Ga and Lanett, Al have an interesting history of there own. Because of West Point Steven’s mills a number of small towns and Lanett are the only Alabama cities to run on Eastern time Zone
Phenix City, AL sticks with Eastern time also. Columbus, GA had the mills on their side of the Chattahoochee River and employed folks from Phenix City.

I’m happy how you approached the whole civil war, slavery, and racism thing. You acknowledge it happened(ing) and that it’s bad, however you did not dwell on it, I’m kind of fed up as a minority (gay) living in the south of people demonizing the south, you even mention the south first thing people think of is racism, sexism, homophobia etc. some people even think lynching still happens. I believe that to not acknowledge it and pretend it didn’t happen or is somewhat still happening would be a Mistake, however to only focus on it would also be a mistake, I really appreciate it and hope you continue approaching it like you did in this video in the future especially for when you get to the more “notorious” ones such as Alabama or Mississippi.
The thing is though the south hasn’t moved past its racism homophobia and xenophobia just looking at this year and how southern politicians and southern authority’s treated civil rights protests shows you how the south and specifically Georgia has a lot more work to be done on updating and rethinking how it treats marginalized groups

I have visited Georgia many times visiting family. It's a very beautiful, green state with so much to see and do. The people were amazing and the food...omg to die for! I love how one can spend time deep in the mountains of North Georgia and then in just a few short hours be relaxing on the beach or taking an airboat through a swamp. Would love to move there one day

I’m from Georgia born and raised here. I love my state it truly is a beautiful state. I grew up fishing the flint river and grew up on a farm. My dad and brother still farm cotton and peanuts.

One minor correction re Georgia’s river systems (not sure if anyone else pointed this out): the Flint does not begin in Appalachia/North Georgia. It begins in East Point, GA near the Atlanta airport.

Well done. I am Georgia born and Georgia bred. I have been here for 50 years now. I was raised in Columbus, GA and I have a home in Harris County which is the county just north of Columbus and Phenix City, AL.We are just across the Chattahoochee River that is the state line between Georgia and Alabama. This state is my home and I have no plans to leave.I'm a Georgia Southern grad in Statesboro, GA. I am proud of the progress made in Georgia and I am frequently in the ATL. it is a great music scene and plenty of attractions and lots to enjoy. I am a husband and father and a southern gentleman.

I would stick with the assertion that Georgia near Russia is named after Saint George hence the George Cross on their flag, similar to the flag of England whose patron saint is Saint George. Great channel btw.
