  • On this Old Friends Virtual Tour, meet King Kreesa, Kharafa and Lubash. Filmed by Mary Greene. Please consider making a donation to support our over 200 thoroughbred retirees. As always, thank you!
King Kreesa’s turf stakes wins include the 2012 New York Stallion Spectacular Bid Stakes and London Company Stakes, for owners Gerald and Susan Kresa and trainer Jeremiah Englehart. Irad Ortiz, Jr. rode. At four, he won the 2013 Kingston Stakes with future Old Friends colleagues Kharafa and Lubash running second and third. So began a three-way rivalry. King Kreesa garnered his first open graded stakes win in the 2013 Poker Stakes (G3), over Lubash and others, Irad Ortiz in the irons. He won the 2013 Mohawk Stakes with Lubash close behind and Kharafa in the field. In 2014, trained by David Donk, King Kreesa finished 1-2 with Lubash again in the West Point Stakes. As in all real rivalries, the tables were turned when Lubash edged out King Kreesa in the Ashley T. Cole, Kharafa running third, then Kharafa won the 2014 Mohawk with Lubash second and King Kreesa third. King Kreesa won the 2015 Poker Stakes (G3), Jose Ortiz up, and also with Jose Ortiz, the 2015 Forbidden Apple Stakes. He continued placing in stakes against his
two old rivals, for another few years, earning a total of $1,431,654. Old Friends thanks trainer David Donk and owners Gerald and Susan Kreesa for enabling King Kreesa’s retirement at Old Friends, where he joined Lubash in 2018. Kharafa soon joined them.
For seven years Lubash was one of New York’s best turf horses. From ages three through ten he raced gamely and consistently, always eager to forge to the front. Trained in his early career by James Ryerson, and owned by Leonard Pivnick’s Aliyu Ben J Stables, the homebred won the 2010 New York Stallion Cab Calloway at Saratoga with Kent Desormeaux riding, and the Fifth Marine Stakes at Belmont with Jose Lezcano up. He ran the Monarch’s Maze Stakes head to head with, and outfinished, fellow Old Friends retiree Little Mike. Trained by Christophe Clement, Lubash won the West Point Stakes at Saratoga over a field including future Old Friends colleague Johannesburg Smile, then took the Ashley T. Cole Stakes. At six he won the Grade 3 Fort Marcy Stakes with Junior Alvarado riding, and at seven the Tropical Turf (G3) at Gulfstream Park under Brice Blanc. At eight he and Alvarado won the Kingston Stakes, the 2015 West Point Stakes, and the Mohawk Stakes. At nine, he repeated his Tropical Turf (G3) win with Joe Bravo up. Lubash raced remained a top New York stakes competitor through age ten. He retired with 54 races, 18 wins, 9 seconds and 7 thirds, and earnings of $1,515,139. He retired to Old Friends in 2018.
New York-bred Kharafa won from ages two through nine in New York and on the Eastern Seaboard, first trained by Timothy Hills for owners Lawrence A. Durocher, Jr., and then for owners Paul Braverman and Timothy Pinch. Kharafa’s victories at age four include the
Ashley T. Cole Stakes at Belmont Park and the Three Coins Up Stakes at Aqueduct, at five the Kingston Stakes at Belmont and Mohawk Stakes at Aqueduct, and at six the Elkwood Stakes at Monmouth and again the Ashley T. Cole Stakes at Belmont. As a seven-year-old he tripled his Ashley T. Cole Stakes victory, and at nine he won the West Point Stakes at Saratoga. His competition on the track included his now-colleages at Old Friends, Lubash and King Kreesa. A true “grand old gelding,” Kharafa remained a competitive stakes earner throughout his career. He retired in October 2018 with earnings of $1,238,622. In 52 starts he gathered 13 wins, 13 seconds, and 9 thirds.
Old Friends is a 501(c)3 non profit organization that provides a dignified retirement to Thoroughbreds whose racing and breeding careers have come to an end. By promoting these one-time celebrated horses through a campaign of education and tourism, we hope to raise awareness of all equines in need. Michael ..... thank you for these wonderful videos on Monday. They start the week off so brilliantly for all of us.
I know you are trying to do your best about Covid but That mask seems to really be bugging you.
Do you feel like you need it around the horses?
These three horses were just so amazing. I wish every retired racehorse could find their way to your farm.
Please continue with them. So uplifting in these restricted times. Stay well and thank you again.

Bless you for providing an alternative to the slaughterhouse for these wonderful horses so they don’t end up like poor Ferdinand 🥵🥵but instead get to live out their remaining years peacefully and with treats like Cigar and John Henry did at KHP👏🏼♥️👍🏼👍🏼
