I use a pad just like that for my Gossamer Gear G4 frameless pack. My pack is so outdated but every time I see something like the nero I realize how awesome my pack is. Instead of the cordage to hold the pad it actually has super thin netting to hold it in place.
Super GREAT video. I believe I have a few changes for my Nero to pack on my hikes in the Mojave. Really well done, informative video. A yes on the Pit Stop and the Dr. Bronner's lido soap. Why NOT? :-)
Thanks for talking about the wind pants again, I had completely forgot about them on your JMT hike and was going to order them for my AT thru hike next year.
Camping in your own tent is not allowed basically anywhere in the trail, so be aware to set up camp very late and take the camp down early to avoid any problems. The scenery is amazing! Went there the same time last year. Last year there was some snow, and as of today 21.6.2018 Fenetre d'Arpette is not accessible for example, so be careful on the snow descents(get a insurance with helicopter rescue, they a relatively cheap there). Bring proper water tight mountaineering shoes if you go trough the high passes! This is the best site for the recent conditions on the route www.autourdumontblanc.com/en/index.cfm/general-conditions.html it's updated every few days, and when they(the locals) say that you should not go to some route, you better believe them :) their definition of "dangerous", really is dangerous!
not sure if anyone cares but if you guys are bored like me atm you can watch all the new movies and series on InstaFlixxer. Been streaming with my girlfriend recently :)
Thanks Bigfoot. Glad to see you enjoyed your TdMB. Just wondering if you will do a post-TdMB video talking about which (if any) changes you would make to the above gear setup, knowing what you know now about the trip. I live in Europe and would like to do the TdMB. I was curious as to whether you got any use out of, for instance, your trowel and your water filter. Thanks!
Never mind the weight, the cost must be astronomical. Do you have a close round number for the cost of that setup? I’m interested in seeing the cost per ounce.
Would anyone recommend micro spikes for a June/July hike. I see lots of snow, but no micro spikes in Bigfoots gear list. Is it that the areas with snow are not difficult to traverse and micro spikes are not necessary?
Quick question: Instead of Dr Bronner's, why not flakes of Ivory Bar Soap? I put some flakes in a small empty shampoo bottle from a hotel, then on the trail add a little bit of water, shake, then use the all soapy liquid to wash. The bottle keeps the rest of the moist flakes for the next time. I feel I don't need to carry the extra water if I can make liquid soap on the trail. Is Ivory soap not 100% natural, organic, and biodegradable? Does anybody know? I'm not sure, but I like it. Thanks!
Bigfoot - thanks for your great video and a Minnesota hello from a fellow hiker in Bloomington MN. My wife and I are planning on do the TMB next summer (2019) around the same time of year. Would like to use my Lone Peak 4.0's for the hike but members of our group are recommending waterproof hiking boots. Wondering if you ever regretted trail hikers rather than more "sturdy" boots? FYI - done much of the SHT with Lone Peaks 3.X's.
fuck 'em! I am offended that people think stinking is a some sort of stupid right of passage, "embrace the stink" whatever, clean up and learn to have good hygiene in the woods, it's not difficult or cumbersome. Grab a bottle of liquid spray hand sanitizer, it actually kills the bacteria that causes the pit stink and weighs less than a roll-on stick Then you can eliminate your gel hand sanitizer and big deoderant combo. Also wear wool t-shirts to reduce bacteria growth. I do this every day for almost 20 years, little to no stink. Dr Bronners can double as toothpaste and laundry soap. A few dabs in your dry bag vigorously shook with a liter of water and your clothes does double duty to your bag and cleaning your clothes....
dmcbyerly you can still have good hygiene and not use deodorant. Good hygiene is washing yourself and your clothes, or changing clothes. Trail laundry is easy enough to do with the synthetic clothes that dry quick these days. But if you don’t wash and just use deodorant that’s not good hygiene, I think that’s why you may be “shamed” because people probably think you just slather on that stuff on and not wash off the sweat and stink first. But hey, why care right?
Tbh, I was pleasantly surprised when doing my first hikes without deodorant. I was in the military and was used to what I now call survival hiking. Even in the civilian world my packs frequently weighed near 100 pounds until I realized I dont have to do that to myself. Lol Since then I have slowly started becoming ultralight and gave up deodorant on a 3 week trip. When I came off trail, I kept apologizing for my possible odor. I kept being told that I didnt smell, some people reaction was that "you smell terrific for not showering or using deodorant for 3 weeks", and one girl even said she would "still take me home" before her face got red. A freudian slip I suppose. Lol I do think it is preference though. If it makes you feel better or think you smell better....I fought it for years. Now I dont care anymore.
Thanks for the video Bigfoot! But seriously, why to you bring that big heavy sawyer bottle / foam filter? I think the micro filter is more than enough for the places you'll be hiking in.
No need for a filter there's fresh water everywhere and nearly ever village has a clean water fountain , I did it two years ago didn't take one extra weight
Hello ! Thanks for this very tuned gear list! if it wasn't an affair tu buy it, would you go with the new Plexamid on a thruhike such as the PCT? Or wouldn't you let go the Duplex extra space as you had during the PCT?
If I didn’t own either and had money to buy either, I might go with the plexamid. If you are expecting to do a lot of backpacking with another person and will be sharing your tent, then I would go with the Duplex. I use my Duplex all the time for solo and dual adventures. I love having all the extra space though.
I noticed that you are trying montbell stuff but have alot of the ZPack gear as well. are you just a person that likes to try new stuff or are you not liking the ZPack gear OR...... is someone paying you to try their stuff or.... is it that you don't want to be the guy who just goes with one brand? I must admit that I'm a sucker for ZPack since Red Beard hiked with it back a few years ago on the AT but it works really well and for an ounce or two here or there I just don't see the sense in buying a different brand for just that.
I love Zpacks Gear and have since I started using them when I did my AT thru hike. I bought the pair of Tachyon pants last year for my JMT thru hike and really like them. Montbell reached out to me and wanted to know if I wanted to test some of their gear, so they sent me the Versalite and the Plasma. I have never been paid a penny for any review or video that I’ve ever done by any company , nor do I do fluffy reviews for anyone.
I was wondering that's all. Not trying to get touchy. Wasn't trying to assume that you do. I guess this is what the channel is for is to try out different stuff. Just thought that once you found something good you would just stick with it. I think there will be a time where things will be as light as they can be and you can't get any better then whats in your pack. I hate to keep spending money getting the latest and lightest.
hey great videos but one question ? is it a gear nerd thing ? or is weight actually important ? im thinking about the treking poles i easy carry up to 44lb on longer winther hikes and never used them ? why do i need them ?
I was in Switzerland last summer. The only difference between the Euro plug and Swiss plug is the Swiss plug is missing the third prong (ground). A euro converter will work just fine, but might want to fall out.

I'd love to see a video of how you use your bronners w/that ziploc bag in the field. great content as always!

Outdoor Adventures without the leggings? Cause that what he said he did
Did this as a thru hike in 2011. Best hike I’ve ever done

better bring an outlet adapter or buy one. The USB charger will be 110-250v but you will need a US to EU outlet adapter.
Great gear! I’m jealous AF! Looking forward to the Sawyer S1 review for sure. Good luck on your hike!!

@Jaziel Jaiden definitely, I've been using InstaFlixxer for since december myself =)

What camera did you use to film your TMB hike? Just the iphone7? The colors look really good.
Would anyone recommend micro spikes for a June/July hike. I see lots of snow, but no micro spikes in Bigfoots gear list. Is it that the areas with snow are not difficult to traverse and micro spikes are not necessary?
Hey Biggie! Great stuff as always. Question for you... What is the best way to track the weather while on the trail???
Quick question: Instead of Dr Bronner's, why not flakes of Ivory Bar Soap? BF how concentrated is that soap? How far does it go on a hike?

Are you gonna be swimming for your life, like you were on the Ozark Trail? That was some funny shit!
First. Nice set up.
Will you be able to bring the trekking poles as carry on item
Bill Benton no
How are you going to use that charger when you’re ineurope?
Cool
Thanks for showing people that you can have a super light setup and still use deodorant. I'm tired of people shaming me for good hygiene.

Good trail hygene saves hikers!! Being dirty spreads diseases. A staph infection is no joke. I won't sleep in a trail shelter.

where spoon ?
I thought electrical outlets were different in Europe
You look like my father :D
hey great videos but one question ? is it a gear nerd thing ? or is weight actually important ?

You need at least 2 power plug adapters... Switzerland and France use different plugs, and neither are the same as the USA...
I was in Switzerland last summer. The only difference between the Euro plug and Swiss plug is the Swiss plug is missing the third prong (ground). A euro converter will work just fine, but might want to fall out.
Normal EU wall plug works fine every where in TMB, I walked it last year the same time.
My French adapter didn't work in Italy last time I was there either - the prongs are slightly smaller in Italy for some reason.
@Ines Reid It all depends. Modern Italian sockets are compatible wit EU standards, but probably in older building you will still find old sockets only
Obtw! Check out my border collie's Instagram to see our pictures from the trail.
Lucky Collie 6200!
# shill alert! Lol!
$100 for a cook pot? This is a million dollar setup. I can't hang with that.
Ool
cut off toothbrush, lol... just buy a kids bamboo brush and use Dr Bronners Peppermint to brush with.
its too heavy
Refugio not refugees
Refuges in France and French speaking parts of Switzerland (as per TMB). Refugio for the part of TMB in Italy. I would just bivouac.
I don't like that
Unsubscribed. Sick of you trying to see me a t-shirt 😡😡😡
Go for a hike...
I’m taking your advice, enjoying myself on the TMB right now!
