  • Winter Hiking Mount Haystack, Basin and Saddleback Mountain in the Adirondack Mountains Through 75 MPH Winds, Snow, Sleet, Hail, Freezing Rain and Waist High Trail Breaking in a White Out
    _________________⚠️Danger ⛔️ _________________
Hiking in such harsh conditions is extremely dangerous and could potentially be fatal for even the most experienced hikers. There is no guarantee that any hike will go as planned. The best thing you can do is research every aspect of the hike including, weather in the days prior, weather on the day of and weather of the days after because sometimes rescues can’t come right away and you need to be able to survive the duration of time it takes to get rescued! Please study the regular weather forecast and also the summit forecast for the mountains you are climbing.. Research your bail out options and have all the necessary gear to be able to safely spend a night in the mountains.. I repeat, Always carry everything you need to spend the night in the mountains. Brittany and I, as well as our entire group are extremely experienced in Winter Hiking / Mountaineering and went into this hike with full knowledge of the weather and every aspect of what we needed to know. With that said this was an absolutely epic, amazing and exhilarating experience hiking these three mountains in such harsh conditions with high winds, white out conditions, hail, rain, snow you name it! We started by going up the Orbed Slide to Saddleback. We then descended the Saddleback Cliffs and headed up and over Basin Mountain which was waist high Spruce traps every other step. I had to pull out my GPS multiple times to confirm I was on trail and we were definitely on trail. Basin is so ridiculously steep! We got down into the Cole between Basin and Haystack to take one nice final food break. We got up to the base of little haystack around 1 PM and geared up appropriately for long exposure in high winds and white out conditions with precipitation of snow, sleet and hail and even some freezing rain! All 10 of us were very happy with our gear and layering system and just another hike that confirms how well our winter mountaineering skills are. None of us would’ve changed a thing!
Before you go out and attempt a hike with predicted conditions that are similar. Please, if you’ve never done it before I assure you that reaching out and asking for advice, opinions, gear, layering options etc. are no trouble. I am only here to help. I just want to make sure that everyone can make safe and smart decisions. All I want is to share my experiences, love and passion for the mountains with you guys and hope that it has a positive outcome. Social media can be used as a positive things to help people gain knowledge on how to be better prepared and be safe. Rather than going into these things and winging it and hoping for the best you can at least now have someone to talk to about it to get a real true game plan from someone with experience. I truly only want the best for each and everyone of you. After all we all want to go home at the end of the day just as safely as we left the house in the morning!! Thank you all so much for watching and being a part of our journeys!

No, it wasn’t bad at all. To be totally honest with you it was easier now than I thought it was in the summer but maybe because there was a lot of snow in the cracks and some of the stuff we had to go up and down was filled with soft snow
