When the Wing Stops Flying!

- I was recently asked a question asking how the NiNE wing reacts to a stall. The easiest way to answer that question is to show you.
In this video, I will explain what a stall is and how the NiNE behaves in a gentle power off stall and also a what happens if you provoke a more pronounced stall.
I am often asked about my aircraft, engine, wing and the equipment, instruments, cameras I use so I have listed links to everything I use below:

Excellent video.
When my dad was going through his midlife crisis 32 odd years ago he decided to take up Hang Gliding and of course I got dragged along too.
It was a brilliant experience and loved the freedom, apart from carrying the thing back up the hill.🤣
I never progressed onto your beautiful hobby and regret it.
I'm in my almost mid 50s now and have booked an experience day this Summer.
Thank you again for the excellent videos.
Hi Vinnie. I loved my mid life crisis and I'm sure you'll get bitten by the bug when you have your experience flight. Please let us know how you get on. 👍
Having just done stalls in a fixed wing (skyranger) you did a great job of explaining it and I think it’s great you included the HASELL check as it shows any student pilots the correct procedures and what to expect.
Ta Jez. Thought I ought to make it look like I know what I’m doing!!
TBF Paul, that landing wasn't as bad as the one I did on my GST........and I still passed! 😲 🙂
Any landing you walk away from is a good one
And I get to use my microlight again, so technically, it was an excellent landing🤣
The aircraft isn't bent, you're in one piece, the runway isn't damaged and you just tested how the aircraft operated in ground effect. In all it wasn't a bad landing.
It wasn’t pretty though was it? I need to spend a session just practicing my landings. I know what I’m doing wrong, just need to dial it in. 👍
Hi Paul,
I watch every clip you make, I especially like the Cross Country Grand Tours you make with Giles & Mark. Top notch.
I ride down to Darley on my motorcycle regularly & have done while Will had his T. Moths there. I’m a member at HEADON.
Keep up the good work, I share a lot of your stuff.
Regards
BATTS.
Thanks for watching and sharing. We’ve got a camping trip planned for next week so keep watching. Also make sure you come and say hello if you see us at DM. 👍
What a great video Paul, love the editing and quality every one gets better and better. I would like you to show us what the real world take off and landing distances are in your flex and what the shortest runway length an average pilot could operate it from on an average day and as a bonus could you show us it's short field performance (you knew I was going to ask that) 😛
Hi Terry, if I ever reach “average” pilot status, I’ll see what I can do. 🫤
Nice video. Wishing you some fair winds and blue skies. Not too bad a landing considering you're flying a very light bird in gusts. 🏆
Thank you. It wasn't a landing to be proud of. Definitely need to spend some time smoothing them out.
Good stuff as always. 🙂 I was at DM last night collecting the PeaBee so I'm a very happy boy. Looking forward to seeing you soon mate. 👍
Cheers Dan. I think Giles and I are dropping into Shobdon soon to pay you a visit. 👍
@@paulieb796 Monday/Tuesday I believe. I'm fuel and food guy so get your orders in before you leave. 😉👍😁
Great video. I don't think the landing was too bad. Thanks.
The camera does funny things. It makes you look fat, but makes your landings look better than they actually were !
Well now that was a good video to watch. Very insightfull on the stall. Thanks! Sending on to my friends! Oh, and the landing, welldone, especially in a bit turbulent condition 👌🙏🇿🇦 Greetings from South Africa🇿🇦
Thank you for your kind comments. Can’t believe my videos are being watched in South Africa! 👍
@paulieb796 you should plan a trip here! And experience our beautiful scenery! Keep on with the great videos, we love them!
Awesome one again and good explanation. I would be happy with that landing tbh
Thanks, but I’m still getting to grips with the new wing and the landings definitely need some work. 👍
Good explanation. Ill have to help you improve those landings..5/10...im feeling generous 😂.
Cheers bud. Its a good Job DM has a bloomin long runway seeing as I float down most of it!!
Good job. Good explanation of a stall.
Thankyou. I did remember something from those exams. 👍
so, in a severe departure from stable flight the airplane will basically snap-roll forward passing vertical into inverted (something which you called a whipstall)... in a smoother scenario, the nose will dip rapidly requiring a quick reaction to regain speed, but the aircraft remains somewhat controllable.... in the smoothest scenario, the airplane will just sink vertically, which does not develop into a flat-spin since you still have your roll control.
That about sums it up although in the gentle scenario, I wasn’t really stalled as the outer portions of the wing were still flying due to the washout in the wing. 👍
@@paulieb796 about the first case, I was thinking something along the lines, hence my question... thanks for the clarification!
Great vid, Paul.Keep them coming! 👌🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Cheers Kev. Been up to loads so got lots of content in the pipeline 👍

@@paulieb796 we are enjoying our beautiful blue sky 25C winter days. Best time of the year to fly here. Storms start in November so have to make the most of it.
Top Vid Paul.
Thankyou. It was a fun one to make. 👍
Good video mate!
Ta very much. 👍
Love your videos. Giving me inspiration 🎉
Thomas, I can honestly say that nothing gives me more satisfaction than hearing that someone might be inspired to do something because they have watched one of my videos. Seriously the greatest compliment you could pay me. Thank you. 👍

You have absolutely made my day Paulie!
Thanks so much for the video!
I really appreciate you taking time out of your life to help a random person see and understand just how benign a full stall is.
Keep up the great work!
I will have more ideas and suggestions for videos!
And you nailed the pronunciation of my last name!
Not many people can say that!😆
Thanks Paul
Thank you Bob. Coming up with ideas for videos week after week can be a challenge so it is a massive help when someone asks a great question that sparks an idea for content. 👍
👍
Thanks Patrick. 👍
Hi from France ! 🙂
Bonjour!!
Interesting video Paul 👍. By the way the landing was perfect, you walked away ok 😎😎
Thanks. I’m struggling to dial in the landing on the NiNE wing. More practice needed.
@@paulieb796 I have an Aeros Discus 15T and I expect to receive my Nine in August. What would you describe the difference landing the Nine compared to a larger wing? Greetings from Austria, just subscribed.
Actually, it’s been 26yrs 😂
I stand corrected. . . Again.
Time flies when you're having fun 🎉
@@paulieb796
As long as she doesn’t say “I’m fine” you’re ok!
Not too sure that first one was a fully-developed stall. I think you were still flying, whilst descending - at or close to vmin - unless you genuinely felt it break. What does the handbook say about spiral dives btw? They really are bum clenchers in flexwings, so I wouldn't recommend you do those for fun unless your very-much across entry & recovery! I nearly offloaded lunch the first time I did one of those in an old F2A.
Definitely wasn’t stalled on the first one. I think the wing tips at least were still flying. Definitely felt a pronounced stall on the second one. Will leave spiral dives well alone. Did them in training and that was enough for me!
@@paulieb796your next hour with an instructor, let's see how they can be safely done. 👍🏻
Hi Paul. Great to see you with some air under yours wheels. Blimey I remember learning about stalls on my first glider course in 1982.
Question - how does a trike deal with a cross wind? I'm very used to how we deal with this in a 3 Axis aircraft.
Note, me second undercarriage, leg, has been fixed, now just building up strength.
So, crosswind landing in a flex. . . There’s another video to add to the list. 👍
Hello!!! 😊
Howdy. 👋
My control bar pushes back at me when I try to stall it. I have to work to get it to stall. I just let the thing fly itself. It's better that way.
The NiNE wing is quite happy to let you approach a stall with very little pressure on the bar. One reason why it is not for beginners! The stall itself though is next to nothing with instant recovery. I agree with just letting he wing fly, I don't normally mess around with stalls other than occasional practice. This was just to help answer a question. 👍
@@paulieb796 You did a great job at answering the question. Great video!
Great video. I don't think that landing was too bad. Your runway is sooo narrow. If the winds are gusty you're going to get bounced around. What do you think of the new Nine wing? How do you think your Fox 13TL wing would have done on this landing? Thanks.
I’m still learning the characteristics of the NiNE and have yet to dial in my landings. The poor landing had nothing to do with the wind conditions (it was quite calm) but more to do with me coming in with too much airspeed. I’m thinking of making a video where I just try and nail the landings.
@@paulieb796 That would be great. Do you still have your Fox wing?
Surely you do a 360 Degree Turn? a 180 Degree Turn is only giving you half of the safety check ;-)
When you are flying a given heading, you have a good 180 degree field of view (probably more) if you then turn 180 degrees and fly a reciprocal heading, you have the second 180 degrees of the full circle thereby giving you a complete 360 degree lookout. 👍
@@paulieb796 I have always done a complete 360 degree clearing turn, but I guess as I am flying enclosed cockpit aircraft I don't have the 180deg forward vision you have in a Flying Deckchair, I would accept that a Flexwing aircraft has better spatial orientation than a Fixed Wing aircraft but I would always advise a Fixed Wing Microlight Pilot to do a full 360 clearing turn ;-)
We’ve all had bad landings 4/10😂
I think 4/10 is quite generous. I’ll take that. 👍
Hi Paul, which typ of headset / helmet set do you use? And which kind of microphone? I cannot hear any noise of wind. That is great. I would like to have the same kind of headset.
Hi bud. I recently made a video all about my audio set up including what helmet I use. Might answer your question if you watch this

Can you spin a weight shift microlight?
I remember my instructor demonstrating a spin in a flexwing so they can spin. Not something I’m keen to repeat 🤢
Hello in the comments.
You literally did exactly as I asked! Thanks. 👍
did the wing actually stall (exceed critical angle of attack with the airflow leaving the wing) in the first scenario, or was it just unable to maintain level flight and therefore in extreme sink... I ask this because I do not see any buffeting which really surprised me.
I have never felt buffeting before a stall. I’m not sure if that’s due to the flexible nature of the wing which absorbs the buffet before it can travel to the control bar. I’m sure somebody more knowledgeable than I will tell me if I’m wrong. 👍
well i tried one of these death traps. i have been flying over 50 years. so i said these arent even real airplanes. so i bought one. well i crashed it and it killed me. spun into a gas tanker. it blewup. then it went vertical and crashed into a a 10 warthog which thought iw as trying to shoot it down then it opened fire on me shot me all to pieces. was a bad day. but im better now. lots of superglue works everytime
Well that was a bad day at the office !
Hi Paul is your engine two stroke and if so what is the fuel to oil ratio and do you use highest octane? Thank you
Hi There. My engine is indeed a two stroke. It is a CorsAir Blackbull 235cc engine. I use Motul 800 oil mixed at 66:1 and I use 99 Octane fuel (with the lowest amount of ethanol I can get which is around 5%).
