  • This is a speed run through the shader graph creation of a 2D hand-drawn fire shader graph. I intend to turn this into a full tutorial (or make it part of a larger tutorial) but for now, I'll just share the graph creation.
EDIT - Full Tutorial up: • Top FIRE Shader Graphs...
I created this during a tech art challenge from Harry Alisavakis ( / harryalisavakis . The challenge was to "replicate" the effect from a game. I chose the hand drawn fire a dragon spits in Cuphead. The ideal goal was to actually mimic the fire exactly, including the reveal and dissolve. But short of that, the more basic goal was to make some fire that looked hand drawn.
This isn't quite what I was after, but the challenge has a time limit, so this was all I could get to. I think it comes pretty close, though I have some ideas on how to make it better in the future.
Let me know in the comments if you'd like a full tutorial on this shader, or if this time lapse is enough. Also let me know what you think of this format.

Please let me know what you think of this format, and if you'd like to see a full tutorial on this effect!

    Amazing!!
I dont mind a tutorial haha
But im much more interested in your thought process behind this. [which is in fact what i like the most in your videos]
I'm not a VFX artist [im a character artist], but there are much more content related to shaders in the VFX community.
Any particular reason why the DissolveOut slider was so sensitive? A remap could be enough in this case?

      Thanks for the feedback!
Yes, a remap there would be perfect. It definitely shouldn't be as sensitive as it is. I just ran out of time to work on it, and the challenge from Harry has a deadline. A simple remap probably would be the right way to go. Something like 0 to 4 for the first 80% and then 4 to 20 or 30 for the last 20%. I also want to get some sort of step in there so that once it's at "max" I completely clear the effect out. As it is, max still has some lingering spots.
If/when I clean this up I'll definitely put a remap node in there!

      It's on the list :)
Still trying to decide if the tut should be just 2D, or cover 2D and 3D.

Just a heads up... I am working on shockwave content now. I've got a queue of videos, so it'll probably be a few videos out, but is definitely on the list :)

was working on this shockwave idea, and realized there are actually quite a few directions I could go with it. What were you specifically wanting to see? There's "screen shockwave" where it's like the screen is a pond and someone dropped a rock in it... the whole screen warps out from some point, like a giant ripple in a pond. Or it could be a shockwave moving through the content of the scene. Either 2d or 3d, where it's like a blast wave. Or likely there are other things I haven't thought of. Just want to make sure your interest is covered.
I'm targeting Dec 7th for the shockwave video.
