I used to guide bear hunters, One of our clients came to camp with a side by side, He was towing it on an open trailer, He had to travel 5 miles from the highway to camp and in that short distance a rock got thrown up and broke his very expensive glass windshield, He had to go through a very rainy camp with no windshield, Turned me off glass windshields right away,
My windshield came with a travel cover. It’s fairly thick and durable with straps to tie it off. Even a poly/ plastic windshield would scratch up driving down the road. I agree a cracked $350 glass windshield would suck.
I have an American land master and it came with the half windows because they installed it and put it into my financing. I Tin windows for a living so they make special films that you could put on the outside of the glass that protects the glass from any scratches, I put Ceramic window film by Max Pro on the outside of my glass to protect me from the heat and protect the glass from the scratches from driving out there in the woods so there you go protected with window 1tint or safety films
The complaint I have always heard in North Idaho is driving logging or gravel County roads with a windshield and the dust gets pulled around behind and covers you. I'm talking about an open model ATV. So most reccomend the fold down or easily removable models. We need to pick something for our new Polarias commander crew. I can see that no shield is not a good option. I have been trying to look at all the info on this but have'nt seen anyone talking about the dust. I know one guy last year that took his out picking huckleberries one time and sold it. He said it was just easier to drive his AC truck.
I have a narrow plastic windshield. The problem I have is dust, even if you have a full windshield if your following your going to get dust. The only way to escape it is have a full enclosure. Or ride alone, one sxs.
There is no windshield that is the best for all users, but glass is almost always better unless you really abuse the machine. If you are going to be smacking through branches, plastic is less likely to shatter, but glass doesn't scratch, and scratches are a killer in direct sun. RainX on glass is awesome! If you are a hunter, run a fully enclosed cabin, or plan on getting muddy, flip up is better than fixed, but if not, fixed is stronger and looks cleaner. I use my SxS for ranch work and touring, so I got a fixed Kolpin glass windshield which looks amazing on the Mule Pro FXT.
I have the SuperATV Scratch Resistant Flip Windshield. I take care to use a clean rag and spray bottle to minimize scratching when I'm cleaning it. I love the versatility of three positions (closed, gapped, fully open). You forgot to talk about the importance of a rear windscreen/film/etc. -- something otherwise the dust just loops around back. I got a simple back film and it made our SXS a little bubble when going down a dirt road. Night and day difference compared to before. I also put in DIY floor mats to prevent dust from coming up through the drain holes in the floor. Good video, thanks!
You had me dying laughing with the flies. They drive me absolutely crazy The level of flies and moths this year in Arizona is unbelievable. Another reason i hate summers here lol. On a more serious note The downfall of the full glass windshields in my opinion is all the blind spots we lose a lot of visibility with the windshield frame.
I bought the full plexiglass windshield from Polaris after buying my new RZR. After the second ride we took it off because of the heat in the cabin. Right now we are running no windshield. Glad to see you posted this discussion. I’ve been thinking is there were any other options?
I have a glass windshield and did the same thing, the cab just gets way too hot. I'll put it back on in the winter but driving a RZR in the Nevada desert with a windshield I have learned is insane.
You didn't mention that the negative ion dust doesn't adhere to glass like plastic. Also, I wish you had gone into testing windshield "wings". Like cars of old that had window wings, these look like a great way to deflect dust intrusion. For many, dust control is a matter of doing the sport, or not doing it in our region. Many folks just give up rather than fight it.
Ok someone tell me the truth! Im getting a utv and multiple places have told me different things about windshields. I want a windshield with a wiper, I have people saying it has to be glass, I have people telling me it has to be hard polycarbonate
My nephew used to laugh at me and my full windshield and he would run full open with his. After being hit by a quail bird when going 40 mph, he changed his tune and had a windshield installed.
BTW there's a huge difference between a straight half windshield and a half windshield with a lip at the top!!! The straight one will have wind going along the windshield and then heading back into your at the top, where as the lip actually moves the wind up then forward a bit and then it goes up over your face and head! HUGE differences!!! So many of these comparisons between full and half windshields, and most don't mention the lip at the tip at all, and it's a completely different situation...
Would have liked to hear the benefit of keeping branches from coming in the cab on tight trails. Especially at high speeds. Also with a glass windshield you can add a wiper. I don't think it would be a good idea with a plastic one.
you didnt mention how a windshield, vented or not, creates backpressure. Sucking a lot of dust into cab. I tried adding a back window but it was no help
Y’all don’t have much gravel where you live do you. We ride ALOT of gravel roads in my part of the country. Glass breaks, shatters, and chips when gravel hits it. Poly is much better.
I have rode on plenty of gravel type roads and never had an issue. I have owned different windshields and will still only choose glass. It’s all about preference and really not a right or wrong answer to it. 👍 -Garrett
Glass is heavy, the vents do NOT stop the dust unless it is a flip up or flip down also makes it much hotter in the can without flip up or down I would love a glass flip up now who makes one for Arctic cat trail no one !!! so I will keep my full flip up plastic and deal with the scratches....

I went with the Alpha glass windshield with vents and two wipers on my RMAX. It’s fantastic.
Very informative. I put self healing PPF on my power flip up windshield. Wash it with hot water and all the fine scratches disappear.
First time riding with a poly dealing with mud and rain. Got home ordered a glass windshield with wiper and a wiper motor

We have towed thousands of miles with zero issues cracking our glass. Some people just back their UTV into the trailer as well.
Glass flip up windshield is the best I recommend

I have the scratchy half w/s.. but I like the full glass with reversible wind wings.. seems to make sense.
the half windshield on my RS1 is a glorious mod. cuts the wind by 3/4
The bentmetal is a good option. Glass and 10 min installation time. Thoughts?

I’ve bought multiple plastic windshields and wish I would’ve just bought a glass one
Helmet with a tinted visor after awhile you replace it but it's really fun
Glass!!!! Only way to go!!
it's almost like they need a negative electrical charge to not attract the dust. Plus cleaning the dust off on the trail sucks.
Glass, hardcoated, with wipers/sprayer

I need to look into a set of those wings. I’ll see if I can find some to test and figure out a good test to show the difference. -Joe
@@DerangedOffRoad Rocky Mountain sells them. Thanks for responding.
Oh how I hate half windshields. I'm a little tall so they seem to direct all wind, dust, and especially pollen DIRECTLY into my eyes.

We used Pledge furniture wax in days past to seal off mud.
Looking at anew talon 1000x4. Looking for accessories so this great info. Like this windshield.
Ive been looking for your roof to get into Canada! We need krx stuff up here to! What supplier in Canada do you work with?
The all glass is the only way to go, those with the metal frames around the glass are junk, like looking through a set of binoculars.
So do manufactures recommend anything special in order to trailer with the windshield on? Or do they recommend taking it off.
SATV full flip, best of all worlds.
“Let’s talk about the negatives to a half windshield “(commercial) …😂
I’m really interested in your window for my 22 cam am x RS rr just like to cost thank you
Half windshield for us here! cuts dust and we dont mind getting wet! heat is no where near as bad as a full shield!
But have you ever been caught in a hail storm? It’s painful!!
@@DerangedOffRoad no pain no gain! but no we don't have much hail here in KY at least if we do we know way ahead of time !
My windshield is polycarbonate and it’s about $300-$600. I’ve never seen a flip down glasses $100 that just does not exist.
What about the vented windshield with the top vent ?
you didnt mention how a windshield, vented or not, creates backpressure. Sucking a lot of dust into cab. I tried adding a back window but it was no help
Did you try a back screen? I’ve heard those get better results. -Joe
How many times do you want to replace that windshield (cracks and scratches)? Wear a helmet with visor or cheap sunglasses.
Between four glass windshields over the last four years we have had to replace zero of them. -Garrett
I love mine however if they would just spend a little bit more all the screws and washers are all rusting already. Should have used stainless steel!
Hey joe! Does this windshield leak where the vents are hinged when caught in rain?
Do be honest, I’ve only been in the rain once or twice with it. I don’t remember it leaking but I imagine if the rain was heavy enough it could. -Joe
