I was interested to read two things recently. 1) There is a strong link between the 1918 flu and developing Parkinson's later. 2) There is a strong link between Epstein-Barr Virus and Multiple sclerosis. Neither is sufficient: many people are infected, but not all get the disease. But the idea is that they "prime the pump" and some will go on to develop the disease. It makes me think about viruses and how we can prevent them with vaccines. We pretty much ignore EBV. Should we be developing vaccines against them to avoid MS decades down the road? More research needed, but very interesting.
Much appreciation for Mr. Fox for being public about his illness and advocating for it. (Both my grandfathers had Parkinson's. Both had the 1918 flu as teens and almost died, then developed PD in their 50s.)

I can relate to having to tell your spouse bad news. When I was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy I struggled with how I was going to tell my wife. I just told her straight with the news then offered her a divorce. She was angry about that and asked me why I thought she was so shallow of a person. Thankfully I married an angel. She stayed with me and she has been at my side throughout. I had to leave everything I enjoyed. Camping and hiking, woodworking, and my job as a nurse. She has been my strength through it all. I feel bad for her, as I promised her when we married that I would always take care of her. I never imagined or wanted for her to have to take care of me.
I always liked MJF as an actor. Very sad to know of his illness and struggles to cope with the disease.

I got the same diagnosis when I was 38. I'm now 46 and this disease has slowly progressed with me. It's getting harder with age to do everyday routines. The brain fog is terrible. I can watch a movie and a month later watch it again and have no idea what it was about. I know the struggles that Michael J. Fox goes through on a daily basis. I was a Nurse. I was supposed to be taking care of patients. Getting this news was devastating. I suddenly felt worthless and went into a deep depression. I couldn't even find a good enough reason to get out of bed. It took me some time to find myself again. I just told myself there were people out there a lot worse off than me. Now I enjoy time with my grandaughters but I still tell myself that someday they might find a cure and I will be able to go back to work.

When I was diagnosed with vanishing white matter and told by my neurologist, "I don't know how you have lived this long," I thought of Fox and the positive example he has offered with Parkinson's. My wife was dignified upon my diagnoses (I suspect she cried in secret). She reminded me "You are more than your disease." As I've outlived three life expectancies (doctors don't bother to guess anymore) I realized how blessed I am with a wonderful caregiver wife who never lets me forget who I really am while loving me through my progressive limitations. I am thankful to God that He has shown me the things in life I would have taken for granted. Neurological diseases are very serious. That is why it is so important that we living with the many manifestations are positive public advocates.

So do I. I have PD too and its horrible. But mine was caused from exposure to Agent Orange in Vietnam. None of my relatives on either side have had it. I don't know if they will ever find cure for it as there are only 1.2 million people out of about 330M in the US that have it. Not sure if thats enough to justify doing hard core research to find a cure. I hope I'm wrong but MJF Foundation has thrown $1B at it and no cure yet. The human brain is very complicated and many fixes are not easy. I'm 71 and don't feel I have much time left. The last 2 years I have been rapidly declining. I was diagnosed with Parkinsons about 6 years ago. I'm no where near as bad has Michael but it's not fun regardless. It's known as the disease with a bouquet of symptoms. Most just think of tremors but it's so much more than that, the effects of it vary from person to person. Some days balance is an issue, another may be tripping when you try to walk due to a shuffle, a bad day is a mix of any number of symptoms. I'm thankful for the Michael J Fox foundation, it brought more awareness and research of the disease.
If your handwriting becomes very small get checked, it's one of the easiest symptons to spot. I went to a neuro for memory issues, he saw my hand writing and sent me to a specialist where I was diagonsed.

God bless Micheal I lost my father to Parkinson’s so I know what it’s like to live with a Parkinson sufferer. Respect to him for living with this for so long I pray they find a cure for him and anyone else who has this terrible decease. My heart was broken seeing my father suffer he had so many falls people even stepped over him the street because they thought he was drunk. People can be so heartless. Until you’ve lived with it you can’t judge. Credit to Micheal for fighting it and his quest for a cure.

It's heartbreaking to know that such a wonderful person is dealing with this awful disease. I wish someone would find a cure for it already. I have loved MJF since I was young and still do. I don't get star-struck and don't follow celebrities, but he is the exception. If I were to have the honor and pleasure of meeting him it would be a dream come true. I'm so inspired by his courage and optimism.

You’re lucky Mike, I am too, having been diagnosed with a neurological disorder at age 53 with MS. Four other kids I graduated high school with were diagnosed the same year I was; but I’m doing the best. My MS is totally stable, as long as I maintain my medication (which I am totally compliant with), and even with this, and 4 other co morbidities, I survived Covid. Michael grew up 100 miles north of where I grew up. MS in Alberta, is the second highest on this continent, and they don’t know why. I became a widow after I was diagnosed, and about 3 years ago remarried an equally wonderful man, who isn’t worried about my MS. So, live your life, love your wife, and be grateful every day you’re above the ground. ❤️ hugs.

He was a kind man, unlike my narcissistic father.

I was at a blockbuster when Michael came in, grabbed a quick look at all of his films, took a VHS to the counter where I was and the Michael asked me what time it was. OMG, my hero just spoke to me! And, I was able to provide him the time. He said thank you and left the store hopping into a sleek sports car and took off. BTW. I auditioned for Family Ties - the right guy got the job.

Michael J Fox never was one of the typical Hollywood "hot bod" types. He wasn't one of the tall, debonair types, but seeing just a small part of what he has been through, and even though he has faltered at times, he has accomplished so much, not just for himself, but for others with the same disease. To me, he's head and shoulders above so many others in the film and television industry. He has an amazing wife who seems just as stubborn as him and makes him that much taller.

Just to say that what is often forgotten is the spouse loses everything too. MJF is successful and financially secure and can hire a lot of help. Most PWP rely on a spouse or child for their care and that person gets burned out and isolated as it progresses. No one wants to invite a couple over for dinner when one of them can’t be understood, eat without spilling, or falls asleep during conversion. The isolation is the worst. Please remember this next time you are tempted to ask about a pwp - their caregiver needs a hug too!

Another man that comes to mind is christopher Reeve, both gave all of a us a reason to go on despite our problems! Michael also came forward about cannabis and its use as medicine, and in particular RS oil, he did this at a time I was considering trying cannabis for my seizures, which caused severe shaking and jerking. I listened and I tried it, and it worked, So I greatly respect and thank him for such a bold stance. I can honestly say it changed my life! I only wish I had tried it years ago.

I do not have Parkinson's myself but I do have CP and understand how as time goes on, things you used to have no issue doing are suddenly much more difficult and the shear frustration that feeling can cause. The tragedy of anyone with Parkinson's is beyond heartbreaking, not exclusive to people who are rich and famous. Rich people, talented people are lucky. Especially those with a devoted wife. I also have Parkinson's, I live alone. I do everything myself because I know there is only one person in the world who can help me, that is me.
