I used to agree with you, I thought it was achingly beautiful, but I find that visually it has aged less well than the E36 and I now prefer the looks of the earlier car.
The biggest jump in performance was the E46 M3. It is an absolute blast to drive. The modern design still holds up today. With that said my heart and bias is with the e92 M3 that I own. 8 years later I still get excited driving this car. It has been the most reliable car I have ever owned besides all the stories you hear about these cars. I plan to keep this car for a very long time. I wish I could own all the older M cars as I have been fortunate to drive them all. The newer M3/M4’s blow away my M3 in terms of performance, but it doesn’t feel special. It’s hard to beat that beautiful sound of the V8.
"The biggest jump in performance was the E46 M3" It really wasn't that much quicker than the European E36 Evo. 321 bhp vs 340 or maybe 360 (depending on who you believe). Are you American? The E36 M3 you had was not the full power version at all.
F80 M3! With the new Equal Length Mid-Pipe it fixed the horrible sound. Great platform to build power. But not going to lie, the E92 and E90 M3s are definitely one of the best sounding M3s by far.
Had 2 3lt E36 m3s a few years ago, 5 speed was a better choice around a track because the 6th gear was only really for fuel saving but the box was the same size. The 5speed took a load more abuse. That said, we stripped all the sound proofing it of them. Best mod idea ever, holy crap, the sound above 6500rpm.
You’re not the only one. I like the previous generation M3’s and all but there’s something about the F80’s design that I like about it especially with it being a sedan. I’m personally a F-chassis person lol

The E46 M3 is an iconic RWD sports coupe, worthy of respect from all enthusiasts. The E90 M3, with it's sedan layout, and it's high revving V8, is my favorite. One of the last RWD NA V8 manuals of the modern era - LSD, hydraulic steering. IMO, the E92 is not only the best M3, it's one of the best road cars. The S65 won international engine of the year every year it was manufactured. As a car, it may not be the best in any arena but it works so well in almost all arenas. Might not be as track focussed as the E46 but will beat it on every track. Might not be as powerful as the F80 but once you're past 6000rpm, it's just a more magical place to be. It can take a family of 4 on a road trip in class, with full luggage. And it can light up the rear tyres at will if you want to be a hooligan. We'll look back on this era as the peak of the ICE before emissions standards played a bigger part. The soundtrack is simply addictive.
