A secret that I learned when I was about 10-12 years old, was to play Disney songs. Most of those Disney composers from the jazz era had lots of macros or riffs that you can incorporated in your playing. That was also the time that I learned to play Broadway musical songs for the white people at school middle school. Alot of that stuff is learning to move back and forth between minor, augmented chords, and 3 note diminished chords and learning to add a 4 note in there somewhere when playing minor keys. Then play fourths, fifths, and major 3rds when filling over major chords. Sean has a very interesting way of explaining things and I enjoy it because I don't think like he does. He has very good perspective.

I love the creativity he displays and thank you so much as always for the amazing breakdowns.. I do think he's definitely doing way too much.. I feel like accompanying such a beautiful singer should be measured and not distract too much from the singing (which is ultimately the main message the song is carrying). Part of being a great player is learning how to do things in moderation so they sound beautiful. Love your channel always bro

Tonycowin, I appreciate your response. As an Atheist, you kindly handled our exuberance to share God’s plan with you…smile. Music to a Believer is one evidence for God’s existence, so we rightly so, get excited about “un-earthly” music. It is beautiful that atheists and believers alike, can appreciate and acknowledge beautiful music that seems to skip over our individual platforms, beliefs and biases. I listened to a secular artist last night in a public square outside and admitted that the talent this musician had, seemed to come from a creative space that no one else on earth seemed to be able to access themselves, unless some “key” to that talent was given to them. Creativity with skill, is a crazy thing to try and loin down, with only a scientific mindset. Thanks again for being kind and honest in your responses. I am guessing we both had the jaw of our minds dropped, when we listened to this piano line…grin. Peace to you and hope you keep listening to music from our side of the stage, as I am still amazed by music from outside my belief system.

@kenfontenot That's not true. No matter how much you may wish to appropriate it, every people have their own beauty.
True American music is Native American Music. Unless you are Native American, your argument don't have any legs to stand upon. Are you Caucasian? You sound like an appropriator.
My people's music began from slavery folk or soul music. This music gave birth to two daughters:
Gospel on one hand and blues on the other.
Gospel had one daughter - African American Classical Music aka Jazz.
Blues gave birth to practically every genre in the United States today - from Rock & Roll to Hip Hop!
The Europeans imported in Bach, Mozart, Chopin and many others (Whom I love by the way).
But true American music is Native American Music... Please continue to study...
And don't be one who appropriate. Appreciate instead. ❤️🙂

I'd also like to add as a point of debate. There is no overplaying here. Singers and musicians have a deep connection when both are musically inclined. Mrs. Wyatt is also a musician and knows exactly what she want to hear. Kim Burrell chooses musicians who will play with this skill level because it opens up more creative opportunities for vocals. versus someone just playing basic melodic structure.

The freedom in embellishment is beyond music theory. No rules apply when you are in the flow state of playing. The only thing I remember about some of my solos is the reaction after the solo is done. Notes alone do not explain or convey the flow state. However, looking at the name of a chord and examining the possiblities juxtiposing the melody is exilerating.

His playing is Amazing, but I don’t like how he’s accompanying her. He’s forcing her to wait until he’s done phrasing. It feels very choppy and unsure. Although I’m enjoying the creativity, I very much so DISLIKE 👎🏽 his timing…

I don't think he makes her wait. I think she deliberately co sings with the piano player. I think you not liking this is just your opinion. I did enjoy it and in other situations we could have a different approach but today this was beautiful and appropriate in my view

@@kazbj9265 If you go look this guy up, you’ll see that he even plays behind choirs like this. I saw a video where he was doing this and he had to keep telling them to sing. It made the whole song feel very unsure!
If he would shorten his phrasing a bit, the songs would be more effective! Remember, MOST people can’t even understand the language of Jazz music. That’s part of the reason jazz isn’t as popular today.
Most people understand emotions and how music makes them feel! I don’t care how great your chops are, if the people can’t comprehend it, it’s NOT effective!

I dont think he made her stop singing. She sensed correctly that letting him solo a bit would enhance the overall performance and enhance the Spiritual mood created by the Song.

The pianist put together some really neat sounds together. Too much to speak of. However, the accompaniment became overbearing and it seems as if the pianist took over the song, instead of truly being a support for the singer. My interpretation of the singer pausing, was because things got whacked out of proportion and the singer wasn’t being given support for what she was doing, and so she had to stop in order to musically reset. Still, the pianist has some superior playing. I can only hope to play as well in my lifetime.

Sorry i think he overplayed her and changed the mood the atmosphere of the service. She was singing from a spiritural relationship with God he was playing from learned skill and talent is my opinion.

He overplaying the soloist .. I know this singer.. she used to be in my music department back in my old MD days.. she Stopped singing because he was filling up too much of her space with his own interpretations.. which became too much of a competition so she backed off !! Her voice couldn’t flow as it should with him actually distracting her from her own flow.. trust.. I know what I’m talking about.. less is more In REAL live situations.. u only play like this in smaller churches and or Shed sessions and or open mics with a bunch of musicians around.. but in NO PROFFESIONAL setting will this fly with ANY major ARTIST.. u won’t be HIRED back!! I promise you.. I learned from major keys players.. smh they taught me this..

Facts, I mean I’m a jazz pianist myself(for 45 years) and I also play for and backup a well known singer, she would have stopped me and told me that I was doing too much, and I just accompanied her yesterday. She likes how I give her space!
In this video, it’s very obvious that this lady was annoyed. I mean it’s written all over her face!

You guys are complaining about the past and how hes doing too much, be smart and steal these ideas and make them your own and create your own sound, theres nothing you can do about the keyboard player over playing but just take it or leave it

This is where you are wrong. You can learn what not to do! That’s what you can learn from him. Only foolish people refuse to learn from the mistakes of others! Listen, he’s not better than Oscar Peterson (who was sometimes accused of over playing in duo, trio and quartet settings) however, even Oscar Peterson didn’t overplay while accompanying singers!!

That BS a lot of these piano players are over playing you do not up show the singer you are suppose to be backing. that is the only thing i do not like about this channel most of the players are just playing for them self over playing. If this was jazz no problem but it you are hired to back some one you do not up stage them.
