Out of Africa, the Basenji dog breed was originally found in the Congo. These dogs use both scent and sight to hunt and were originally used to flush small game into hunters' nets and to control village rodent populations. Science has now proven what Basenji fanciers have long believed to be true: Basenjis are one of the oldest breeds of dogs. Fanciers consider the Basenji to be the most beautiful and clever of all breeds. The proud bearing, curly tail, wrinkled brow and sense of humor of the breed is the breed lover’s ideal. Whether hunting or prowling the kitchen, whether proudly posing in the sun or garnering hugs, the Basenji captures the devotion of its owner.

Sad story alert!!!
At 18, in 1979, my best friend backed his '65 ranchero out of his driveway.
His dad's basenji was lying on the driveway, behind the rear wheel unseen.
You can guess the horrifically awful...I'm not gonna paint the picture of his injuries here but...trust me, he was not repairable.
I was tasked with putting him down with a .22 Hornet. My friend couldn't do it. Although I've hunted since age 9, I was sickened by the task.
I did it. Had to be done.
Hardest thing I'd ever had to do at that point in my life.
Telling my friends dad when he got home was a close 2nd.
Always check behind your vehicle when backing out.

The dog I lost in November 2019 was a Basenji/English border collie cross. She was smart, gorgeous and so much fun to be with. I don't think I ever put her on a leash more than a few times in her whole 14-year life. I trusted her and she knew it.
I really like this dog. Its a "natural" breed.
You should do one on the Csrolina Dog and the Azawahk. Two other very old natural breeds.

Is it true they get health problems easily? They seem like the ideal dog for me in every aspect but I'm scared about the health problems.. do all dogs have the same problems or just basenji
Money Mule They aren’t more prone to health issues than any other dog. The main problem for them was Falcone’s Disease but that has been largely bred out of them. They are a generally healthy dog.
My wife had a basenji for 11 years i was with him for 4, the best dog ever, he will never be forgotten.
I love this breed! Have owned 2, including Savannah, who lived to almost 16. Pros: They are loving and dedicated to their owners and have a wonderful sense of humor. Practically no grooming.Also they don't bark! Cons: they have strong prey instincts so cannot be let off leash unless in an enclosed area.

Put a bell on the collar please. They don’t typically bark and can be escape artists. A bell helps locate them and also alerts potential prey
I remember when I delivered newspapers in the early eighties to a house where the guy bread them they don't look quite the same

This is the version that european bring in Europe in the 20th century. But in Africa you can found labrador sized basenji.

Cool dog's, I prefer smaller dog's, just because the life expectancy is a bit longer then a lot off big dog's, I like bigger dog's too for shure, I have a fox terrier mix he looks a bit like the basenji, but a bit taller(17Kilo) and with folded ears.
My basenji gets an a plus.

This dog reminds me of my dog 🐕 in Philippines 🇵🇭I don’t know exact breed but I think it was an “Aspin” at the same time I think it’s part basenji sense it doesn’t bark that much and short hair
Many asiatic and middle eastern aboriginal breed share similarity with native African breed. For example in Thaïlande you found a dog with ridge on the back, that the same for southern African dogs who own Ridg on theirs back.

Not in the traditional sense. They do short howls usually when they want something or someone doesn’t go there way. But very quiet even when they see strangers or strangers dogs.

I disagree with the shedding part. The hairs are small and hardly noticeable but they do shed. Especially during the summer months.
