  • LMS Stanier 5XP 'Jubilee' 4-6-0 5699 'Galatea' was rescued from Barry Scrapyard in 1980, initially to provide a spare boiler for her sister 'Leander'. Having sat dormant since 1964, as well as suffering a cut driving wheel during a shunting accident, it was thought that the locomotive would never run again. However, following purchase by West Coast Railways in 2002, the engine, once destined to be a doner, steamed for the first time in almost fifty years in April 2013.
Towards the end of her first boiler ticket, 45699 was turned out in BR Brunswick Green livery as long-lost classmate 45562 'Alberta'. As well as being the final 'Jubilee' in service, it is believed that some components of 'Alberta' were used in 'Galatea's restoration. After running in this guise for some time, a further transformation occurred when she gained the name and numberplates of 45627 'Sierra Leone'. Therefore, the 'Jub' has gained the nickname 'Galberta Leone', being 45699 running as 45562 running as 45627!
The engine took charge of the final 'Scarborough Spa Express' of the season, following in the footsteps of Carnforth stablemates LMS 'Black Five' 44932 and 'Royal Scot' 46115 'Scots Guardsman'. Our video begins at Kirkstall Forge, where we see the train coasting towards a pathing stop in the down loop. A diversion via Castleton and a lengthy water stop at Church Fenton allowed me to jump ahead of the tour to York, where I was bowled out by an incoming Class 68 at Bootham footbridge. The return run is captured at Scarborough Bridge and York. Make sure you don't miss the LMS Inspection Saloon on the rear of the train!
I hope you all enjoy the video. Thanks to the team at West Coast Railways for a very good tour. It's always a pleasure to see 'Galberta Leone'. Feel free to comment and subscribe!
