The sound of these amazing aircraft sends chills down my spine. They may be weapons of war but they are utterly beautiful.
It's always a big privilege to see the big Lancaster and the B-29 flying. A unique experience.

Because such videos exist I am going to assume I'm not the only person who shoots off into a special emotional zone when I hear the sound of big bomber engines. The technology of this period is utterly delightful.

It’s really cool to see the Lancaster from the Hamilton warplane heritage museum in Ontario Canada. As a kid I used to live like 30 minutes away from the museum and practically lived there :) and seeing this thing fly takes your breath away literally
There is nothing more emotive, than hearing a Rolls Royce Merlin firing up! And pulling full power prior to take off! On a Spitfire, Hurricane, Mustang, Mossie and others, or the Grandest one of them all, the Lancaster!. Great that these warbirds and their original engines are preserved and maintained for future generations. Lest we forget the sacrifices of those men who flew them in combat, the women who 'ferried' these aircraft from the factories and repair shops to airfields and the ground crews who kept them operational!.
I'm not sure I can agree.
All aircraft engines from that era have a certain feel to them.
Just like helicopters and jets from the cold-war era have another, but just as unique feeling to them.
Modern engines have the very same, although yet again different feeling to them.
I just like flying machines, why always choose?

I was thinking the very same thing. Blurring a sign on a tail does not make like history has never happened.
We preserve things to remember and to teach history. Only learning history avoid making same errors from the past.
@Jack W I'd prefer to think that, but doubt it in today's "safe-space" society. Nice bit of info on the fact that German aircraft can't display that. Thanks! Didn't know that. So, static displays in military museums in Germany can't have that, either? Interesting! I guess I could understand that rule in the late 40's & 50's, but in the 60's we had a sitcom here in America about a German Stalag. Really can't believe that made it to the airwaves.
Only a matter of time warbirds are banned as they are a symbol of white supremacy. You know the way the world is heading. Unless of course they have tuskagee 99th fighter sqn markings that will be allowed.

I love these old warbirds and as an aging Brit I have to admit I even like the German planes but only the British planes make heart warm instantly.
I'm german and i feel the same for the german planes especially the "Tante JU"(aunty JU,Junkers 52).

VR was the identification code for 419 Squadron, RCAF. VR A was 419, plane A.
She is nicknamed Vera and is one of two Lancs still flying. You can see her at Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in Hamiltion, Ontario.
It's been years since I've been to an air show, now I can relive those days through these videos.

My kid played for the bombers youth hockey team and got to have his team photo taken in front of the Lancaster. What an amazing experience!!! Thank you to all involved in making that happen!
Many of these aircrafts have Rolls Royce Merlin engines and they all have the same exotic sound
I am a big fan of the hawker typhoon/tempest with the Napier Sabre engine
@Jack W one of the most complex engines of ww2. But out of the box 2000+ hp. That was necessary to beat the fast Focke Wulf 190. Spitfire was no match for that plane.

Avro Lancaster sounds a lot like 4 P-51 mustangs glued together. Makes sense since they both use the same engines.

hypocrisie oui vous allez en Espagne on ne les cache pas ça rime à rien ce n’est pas parce que un avion se balade avec une croix gammée historique que le pilote est nazi non? Enfin chacun son truc j’ai été jumelé avec la 101 eme division et participe à de nombreuses reconstitutions ça nous a jamais posé de problème de voir une croix gammée on ne nie pas l’histoire hélas ! mes parents nés dans les années 30 se souviennent bien encore des bombardements en piqué des avions à croix gammée. C'est de l’histoire contemporaine il faut donc faire attention. Tous les allemands n’étaient pas des nazis. Mais cette idéologie a fait des millions de morts. C'est pourquoi même dans les reconstitutions à but non pédagogique ou historique les précautions sont de rigueur. Rappelez vous du tollé pendant le tournage de Opération Walkyrie film anti nazi et où les acteurs étaient entrés dans un restaurant en simples uniformes de la Wehrmarcht. Bien à vous.

The P51 was not designed as a long range fighter.....but as an RAF army cooperation aircraft for the British purchasing commission who bought it straight off the drawing board. Originally with an Allison engine, when someone tried out a Merlin in it, it turned a good aeroplane into one of the greats.

@@dhy5342 The original version, Mustang Mk1, was used in North Africa as part of the Desert Air Force, in tactical strike and recce roles, with a good (low level) performance so that it could fight well too. Originally the purchasing commision wanted someone to license build as many P40s as they could, since that was the type being used there for those roles. North American persuaded them otherwise. Though the Mk4s with Packard Merlins could be used for a long range escort, in British service, used more for offensive fighter sweeps.
@@99loki The original Mustangs were the Allison powered versions built for the British RAF. The USAAF used a simillar version designated A-36 and often called the Apache.
If I recall, when they were needed for long range bomber support, auxiliary drop fuel tanks were added - made of paper!
Love the warbirds but I much prefer the big radials. I'm taking my grandson to see "Doc" in a few weeks.
We went October 2 and Doc is absolutely gorgeous, probably better than when it rolled out of the factory in 1944. And the sound of those engines firing up will send a chill through you 🙂🙂🙂

I really do think that is one of the most beautiful airplanes ever built.
That Spitfire that's shown after the Lancaster bombers is one of the much later versions, the MK-XIV. It was commonly called the "500 mph Spitfire" It had a 5-bladed prop instead of the normal 3 blade and the engine rotated in the opposite direction. Unlike the rest of the spitfires, this one didn't turn very well. Was used a lot for reconnaissance and when used as a fighter it used boom and zoom tactics (called an "energy fight) instead of the normal Spitfire "turning fight".

It wasn't just the fuselage of the Mosquito that was wood, but the whole structure, spars and all.
The text at the bottom of the screen said the Mosquito was 'unarmed' and yet there appeared to be 4 gun barrels at the nose of the fuselage.
No wonder it went well over 400mph

I looked up the info on the Mk VI. It had 20mm cannons - pretty good in its own right.
But the Mk XVIII having a 57mm cannon? Yikes! The recoil from firing that must be hell on the aircraft itself.
@@gregparrott The original concept for the Mosquito was as an unarmed fast bomber. But it proved very capable in many roles, from reconnaissance to transport (of ball bearings from Sweden) to fighter-bomber (ground attack). The one in the clip above actually has 8 guns - four .303 Browning machine guns visible sticking out of the nose, and four 20mm cannon underneath - quite heavy armament for the period. That would have been either a ground-attack or night fighter variant.

Nice clip! But you shouldn't call the Fw190 cannons "0.8-inch", but what they were - "20mm" or "2cm" cannons. (It's the same as referring to Browning .50-cal MGs as "Browning 12.5mm MGs".) Those who want an imperial conversion can work it out if they really need to. 👍
Well, wen I was in the Army, in our Calvalry regiment the MGs equipping our M113s were actually called "12,7 mm Browning"

Agreed. The RAF used a lot of 20mm Hispano cannon, too. For example in the Spitfire and Mosquito featured here. They were never called "0.8-inch" either, that was never a calibre.

First three planes are all the same engine. The Brits did make more that just the Merlin.
The B-29 was not intended to replace the B-17. It was designed specifically for "Very Long Range" bombing missions that were to be the norm in both China and the Pacific against Japan.
Likewise, the Mustang was not designed as a long range escort fighter, it was originally built in response to an RAF requirement for a fighter pure and simple. Once the Merlin was fitted it improved the high altitude performance and range so that it became feasible as a long range escort when fitted with drop tanks. The RAF continued to use Allison powered aircraft largely in a tac reconnaissance role, as well as combat.

It’s a Lancaster which would have delivered the 3rd nuke had it been needed.
They were considered for all the nukes, because of their huge bomb bay.
B29s had two smaller bomb bays with the wing mainspar separating them.
Lancasters would have struggled with altitude and speed (to escape the blast) though.
In the end some B29s were modified.
Yes, all of these aircraft sound and look amazing! One question I have is why was the swastika on the Faulk Wolk 190 blurred out? I can't find any images or videos where this is done throughout the Internet.

Most of the descriptions have inaccuracies, the mosquito was a strike fighter / bomber, and you can visually see the 20mm Hispano Cannons on the nose of it, all four, so unarmed is untrue

The Spitfire was so much bigger than the Focke-Wolfe. Look at the size of that P-51 prop - powered by. Merlin.
Come on down to Virginia Beach in October and see a lot of acft that you saw here at Jerry Yaugin's place. Half of the acft you saw here were his. He has a Hurricane, Spit, Me109 as well just to name few.

How come the Lancs has a VC painted on her side?
V RA is a memorial aircraft to Andrew Mynarski who gave his life attempting to save his pal ( the tail gunner ) in a similar Lanc. He passed of wounds incurred because his parachute burned on the way down. the tail gunner survived the crash and the war.
