Shunsui was handicapped because they were all fighting together, as he is best suited for 1v1s. In a Q&A, Kubo was asked what would happen if Shunsui used his Bankai against Aizen and he said that the story isn’t Shunsui’s (basically he could use his Bankai and defeat Aizen, but potentially everyone else would’ve died, since his Bankai targets everyone in the play regardless, they can’t do anything about it, and it could also take himself out and that’s why Ukitake told Shunsui not to use his Bankai against Starrk, as ‘others could see him.’) On top of this, his Bankai wasn’t mastered, so his max potential wasn’t realized (could’ve learned more plays with different acts) and Katen is moody, so if she wasn’t in the right mood, the effects would be weakened.
