NO SPOILERS but here's some fun tidbits:
A) Aaron Burr was not Charles Lee's second in this duel, LMM just made it so for the musical to add further drama and continue the running theme of Hamilton and Burr being opposites but similar at the same time.
B) The Reason Charles Lee hated Washington was because HE had expected to be made the leader of the Continental Army. He was a higher rank than Washington (who'd made it as high as Colonel I believe in the British militia before eventually resigning), and he technically had more 'experience' but he lacked the ability to naturally inspire people the way GW did. Anyways, he disagreed with GW on battle tactics and when Washington offered him a promotion to General if I recall correctly he originally turned it down because Washington wouldn't follow his idea in battle. He eventually accepted but once on the field he tried to implement his own strategies, which caused all of his men to become so hopelessly confused that it was one giant clusterfuck basically. Washington eventually had General du Motier (Lafayette) take over. It was thought that, had it not been for Lee's colossal fuckup, the Patriots could have WON at Monmouth instead of achieving a stalmate. Lee of course blamed GW for everything and spent like more than half a year bitching
C) Literally NO ONE liked Lee, including the Continental Congress. He got challenged to MANY duels in his life because of his big fat mouth. In fact, after the Battle of Monmouth where he fucked up royally (even Laurens said in a written account that Lee's 'commands' were so contradictory on the field that he couldn't keep up with what he was meant to be doing). Among others including Laurens, another person that challenged Lee to a duel over his relentless shit-talking about Washington was the Baron von Steuben, the man who trained the Continental Army and whipped them into proper shape after Washington sought his help.
TL;DR: Everyone hated Lee because of his inability to accept any responsibility. He sent a letter to the Congress that was apparently so obnoxious that Congress TERMINATED his position in the Army. The men that were younger than Washington saw him as a father figure (Lafayette, Laurens, Hamilton even though he wouldn't admit it) and those who were older or the same age (Nathanael Greene, Henry Knox, Steuben) saw him as a very honorable man and a lot of loyal guys got pissed off whenever he was unfairly slandered by people that were bitchy over his position.
HEARTWARMING FACT TO END OFF: Originally, Charles Lee wanted to duel Washington, I'm pretty sure, and GW declined because he didn't believe in dueling and thought it was a waste of time, so he refused to challenge him even though he was talking smack.
John Laurens, taking advantage of an apparent loophole in 'dueling etiquette' stated that if a man doesn't wish to participate in a duel, his son may challenge the offending party on his behalf. So, even though they were in no way related, Laurens basically confirmed he saw Washington as his father (his own was pretty shit so I don't blame him), and asked Hamilton to be his 'second', which Hamilton agreed to.
If Washington wasn't their father figure I don't know what he was. Seriously tho, from what I've read (I did my researches) he must've been an important figure not only to Hamilton but for both Laurens and Lafayette too.
