As a relatively new player I would add, build the SETA as fast as possible, the components are relatively common drops from enemy ships and it can be crafted at the workbench. The SETA basically allows you to speed up time by 10X, which becomes almost essential when you start building stations where some of the modules can take upwards of 30 minutes real time to build, also when you get medium size or larger ships the shields take forever to regenerate, you can back out of battle, turn on SETA and they'll regenerate in a matter of seconds. I was nearly 100 hours in before I built it and now don't know how I ever lived without it. Also once you get things like wharfs and shipyards at your stations, you have to assign a ship trader before they will work, you do it the same way you assign a manager, but the game doesn't really tell you, I spent hours trying to figure out why my first wharf wouldn't allow me to buy or upgrade ships.

@@cooperonline when I want to learn new stuff, I like the actual information not some yadara yadara flap flap gums. I appreciate the effort but wasting almost 2 minutes of my life listening to stuff I couldn't care less about, is not my cup of tea. Sadly, there are many that do this.
Another little tip: When you deploy mines, always remove SLOWLY! Otherwise they will blow you up. Took me some time to find out that fast removing doesn't work.
A big thing for me was if you select a ship on the map. say a hostile ship you want to shoot. but when you go back to first person view you dont have it selected. Very annoying. But wait! If you select a ship on the map then press T, it will select it for the first person view! SO useful for finding buzzing little fighters.
Just picked up the game yesterday, clocked maybe 3-4 hours since then, you managed to address every minor annoyance I have run into in that time, thanks! Pretty solid video looking at the first few hours of gameplay.
DON'T sell your ship directly to shipyards or wharfs before stripping them of their equipment. For some reason right now the cost of equipment isn't factored in, only the price of the hull, so you have to first dock your ship at an equipment dock, sell its equipment, and THEN sell it. You'll make ~2 to 5 times more money this way, depending on how well-equipped your ship is.
If the ship you’r on doesn’t undock when you give it an order, you can talk to the captain by looking at the character and press left mouse button. Then you get the dialog window and there should be an option that’s says “proceed to next order”. If you press that it should start to fly. Also when you look at your owned property list, the ship you are one has a lighter green name in the list wether you fly it your self or just are along for the ride it dosn’t matter
@@bryanstam3321 yeah; it's in the setting under "anti-marooning" and it can be disabled, but then make sure you "remove all orders and assignments" on ships before taking control of them if you don't want them to leave you as soon as you get off them.
A good tip for starting players if to check asteroid filed in you starting zone (at least start 1 has one). Look for crystals on asteroids and shot them down. Then press O to get them inside. They will end up in your personaly inventory. After this go back to any startion, visit shop and sell it. If you are lucky you may end up with 2-3 milions. (if you can find rare crystals)
Might also mention that crystals will show up as shining in the sun if you look at an asteroid field. so if you see blinking; thats a crystal most likely
@@MerchantIvoryfilms Well asteroids auto-generate, so they should respawn like other items. They wont show up till you get close. You may have to leave sector for a while so they come back, or you can mine in paranid space with fuckload of asteroids that you will never run out.
When you dock in a place you can use the elevator or what ever is down the stairs. To instantly teleport to the store you want to. You can then shift+D. And instantly teleport back on your ship.
Game Spoiler: can someone help with the initial boron mission. I went to buy the antimatter cells and I don't know how to continue the mission, or get the money to buy the ship he/she wants

For people who need a bigger font, it can be changed in Settings > Gameplay > UI Scale .. be sure to confirm (the button is below where you select) and your UI will reload.
Great tips :-) That repair bit I knew because I'm too much of a tightwad, fix ship vs send to wharf... fix ship every time. I modded in the spacesuit repair beam to X3 for similar reasons. It's good to see that Egosoft officially incorporated that as a core mechanic in this game.
You actually have to tell your pilot to undock. That awkward moment when you send your ship away and you just stand there and gaze into the emotionless crewmen's eye next to you untill your ship returns. Mistakes were made..
I wish I knew how I was supposed to approach Hatikvah's mission, Going Offensive, when I first started playing. That is, I just bought the game, and I'm stuck there right now. The only video on RUclips about that mission entirely skips the part of the mission I'm stuck on. ;_;
Another Tip, once you have accessed Research you can craft Mods for your ships at a workbench in the ship sales offices on Shipyards and Wharfs. They need componenets looted from eney ships.

It's definitely better than Rebirth but in terms of 'evolution' I have to say there's not much of substance there other than the structure of the world itself and is basically a modest upgrade of X3. What's frustrating is that the same clunky, intuitive interface that makes finding information a chore is still there with no ability to resize and position any of the windows. We're in a gaming world of larger resolutions and multi-monitors, allow UI customisation at least. It's already mostly square windows so just aim for what EVE Online does with UI because even that would be a major improvement. Quest pacing and narrative quality still has that 1990s amateurish quality about it and is badly written and voiced acted. Egosoft seems not to have bothered hiring a character modeller to make the NPCs look anything other than stupid and derpy while also animating poorly. NPC ships around the station still find themselves getting stuck and generally intersecting badly with the station due to pathing and AI. Evcen autosaving locks the main thread and freezes the game instead of doing it in the background like most other games with autosave do. These common problems seen in all the past titles should really have been ironed out long ago so that this latest version looks slick and polished enough to complement the parts that make the series good such such as trading and exploration. Never underestimate the importance of polish and attention to detail. Good content by the way. You clearly realise the importance of passing on new information gained by experience rather than doing what many others do by just regurgitating stuff from in-game tutorials / manuals.
Before selling anything to the trader in the shopping mall I would go to the crafting table right of him/her and see what you can make with what you have, as normally crafted items can be used for missions or sold to the same trader for much more than, such as that argon meat you sold for 845 credits. You can make fine food from that and two other items normally found on the trader which give you great return every time. Also look for blackmarket mission they will take illegal goods from you for good coin in bars. I also turn off auto save that sucks all the time!
Thanks, I hate auto pilot and now I know I can leave manual travel mode when in a menu. Also always run was good to know. So many times I would return to ship trying to run using shift.

Out of the NUMEROUS games I play, I've seen a lot of games re-use already existing engines and assets, but I have never seen any other game using X4's engine and assets. Yes the game is still buggy, but they're working on it. With the recent games we're getting (cough Fallout 76), I'll give them that. Once again, deep sandbox games are games that won't take you by the hands. They might seem cheap, unpolished, and like they have nothing to offer at first glance, but you do understand they have a lot to offer when you're getting into them, that's as simple as that. I would advise you to watch a tutorial if you're lost, I can understand that, or you can simply switch to another genre. I just can't let you tell this game is crap whereas it's not, it's just the way you see it (and many people do as well), but that's only the visible part of the iceberg.

I’ve needed this, my very first play through I managed to lose my ship? End up on a bridge that was even the same place my ship was on?! Then ended up in my space suit floating in space all alone?! As it glitched.. A great start.. 😅
Regarding the given order to you ship and why it didnt work; usually if you are on it or it is the last ship you've piloted you will have to right click the ship again and press 'procede with current orders'.
So, I guess (basing in save/load times) they did not get rid of xml format for savegames - on one hand you can edit them with text/xml editor the way you like, but save/load times on 150-200mb xml savegames is awful...
well their game save file contain a huge some of DATA so i "think" an XML format is the easier way to go in this kind of situation it also let them edit files easily to stress test some situations,
@@Yokenshiro11 on contrary, by its design XML is suited for small data and is absolutely awful on large data; i suppose they were going to switch to binary serialization but since X games are still long way from being a finished product, they focused on more pressing issues...
S C I attribute the huge save/load times to the fact that each time you save/load, you are saving and loading the entire universe. Since there are no load times, you save the entire universe and all the ships and locations, same with load
@@Schmidt334 it is because of XML - see the size of your save files ;) 8 is way too longer than storing 1 byte of hex 8... and each ware for each station each cargohold has not just quantity XML tag, but many other hierarchical tags - imagine the overhead!
I played about 70 hours of X4 when it first came out and then put it down until yesterday and am totally addicted to it again. 1 thing that I JUST realised and wished I had known from the beginning - you can pause the game and issue orders while the game is paused 😣 I feel so dumb for not realising this sooner and trying to do everything in real time.

Easy money at the start is shooting crystals on asteroids. Look for the sparkle on roids. Also highly recommened the mod crystal finder that makes them glow (imho this should have been the way instead of hard to see sparkles). you can easily gain a few million early on.
thanks for the effort of uploading. has someone seen a decent review of the game from a X3 player? i have tons of questions better answered by a veteran i guess. Just one thing: if you are strapped for cash - do anything but the story. : 1. scan down crystals in the system. 2. do maintenance missions. 3. automate your income through mining ships.

I changed the ship-controlls to . W = increase speed. S = Decrease speed. Z = Strafe up. X = Strafe down. A = Roll left D = Roll right. Mouse Left = Strafe left. Mouse Right = Strange right. Made flying alot more... intuitive.
How do you get the map to stay still and zoom in. My map constantly drifts and is off screen making it pretty useless. Iv'e turned off Gamepad which helped a bit, but no way is it llike in your video. Great tips thanks.

Game braking tip .. do not read ! Harvest crystals on space rocks 30 minutes in an asteroid field will make you a cool million + Just cruse around and look for small colored spots or at distance you'll see a small flash from the asteroids surface, shoot it and hoover up the drops, sell to vendors on stations.
How the hell did you get the framerate so smooth on the station? My PC should handle this easily at 2k in theory but fps drop to 40 or even lower at stations.. no idea why.
If you ride the superhighway, you should see 3 different factions with wharfs/shipyards. They aren't small icons, they are huge, one with a solid triangle (wharf) and one with a triangle atop two rectangles (shipyard)

I sadly took a refund . Reading the posts it seems this effects new higher end machines . I was soo looking forward to this , I tried all that was suggested but still no launch . Does it have SETA and can we abuse that with an automatic revenue source. I remember back in the day leaving the game on overnight in SETA and shocked how much money I made. We were very poor and it felt good to tell my wife how many millions we had.
I have played every X game.. though I started with X2.. which imho was the best. When they dumbed down docking to suit folks who couldn't fly it bothered me. I have done 5 accts in EvE online (which isn't flight I know). Elite through Elite Dangerous, if it flew I was there! But I have to say this X game makes me feel like an idiot. Hell "Rogue Element" makes complete sense compared to this game. I bought this.. returned it.. bought it for someone else... watched a lot of YT, re-bought it.. Still feel like a moron. It's all good though. I am learning. Last night I could not figure out how to sell my ships and after half an hour I went to bed. So maybe your video showed me how an I'm gonna go try it now. Maybe with 20-30 restarts I'll have enough info to start with. I would like to know what mouth breathing window licker came up with the default config for X 52 pro flight stick. Hi, assuming you mean you've already captured the ship and have control of it, you really can only transfer crew at a station -- aside from marines there doesn't seem to be a way to get crew to change ships in flight. So fly your captured ship to a dock, have a ship with the crew you want to transfer dock at that same location. Then when you talk to the crewmember or use Comms you can tell them something like "I want you to work somewhere else" and select your captured ship. Hope this helps.
@@danielOconahap unfortunately no, but if you use a marine to capture a vessel, that marine becomes its pilot and can fly it to station for you. You can hire additional crew through the upgrade ship option at Wharves and shipyards. Once the ships landed comm the pilot and tell them to work elsewhere then set them back to Marine. then use the upgrade screens to buy a full crew including (hopefully) a better captain.
The X series is not very story driven, it's a sandbox game first and foremost. Story missions often require you to build up your empire in different ways to fulfill your next objectives ie buy another ship, build a station, arm your ship up to face tougher enemies, etc. That means even if you want to concentrate on the "story", you'll have to spend most of your time doing side missions, trading, bounty hunting, pirating or managing your assets. In general, the plot is used as a device to give you access to special benefits or stations. Off the top of my mind, in X3:TC one of the plots basically gives you a player shipyard which you can use to reverse-engineer and manufacture ships. Another one gives you access to a "Hub" sector that lets you reconfigure the gate network of the universe, allowing you to shorten your trade fleet's route, or unleashing hell on factions you hate by surrounding them with Xenon sectors. Also, don't expect any cutscene or stellar acting. Most of the plot is delivered through your ship's comms, and voice acting along with the character models. 90s era kitsch, I like it but it's an acquired taste.
Wilson, to get the main mission chain, use Scan Mode (Shift-2) and fly near stations to find a data leak that opens a comms channel. There is an in-game tutorial on how to do this stuff.
This looks like too much for me, I am 51 and by the time I would have learned how to play this game I will probably retire. Wish they would make Freelancer 2.
Why is every video like this, the most basic barebones things that anyone will discover after 1 hours of just playing? How could ANYONE not know that you can sell stuff to the Shop on stations? Or read settings "Autoroll" and "Maintain speed in menus" and not automatically understand what they do (self-explanatory)? This isnt to rag on your video. I just.... Every video like this ends up being the same thing. "Did you know, some players might not know this, you can press E to get into your ship!"
@@drchops Even a single glance at the steam forums, just a mere browse and you see what the problem is. Now SOME people report fewer problems, thats because the game utilizes a form or seed generating system, meaning each new game will be slightly differently seeded. That can cause some differences, but tons of people report broken trading, mining, pilot leveling, weird fps problems or memory leaks.. and thats just from the top of my head. Let alone the crashes (though more rare i'll admit) or weird things like 'missing AI' as in, no xenon or khaak attacks, just completely gone or not doing anything. Latest issues seem to be more about no ships being able to be produced by the AI factories, somehow they're all out of parts all the time for no reason, no reason because no ships are being build at all. But sure hey there are no bugs in this game.. lel.. gtfo fanboys.

Ive had to do that a few times, but it only seems to happen if I give orders to a ship in the same station and Im out of my ship

These common problems seen in all the past titles should really have been ironed out long ago so that this latest version looks slick and polished enough to complement the parts that make the series good such such as trading and exploration. Never underestimate the importance of polish and attention to detail.
Good content by the way. You clearly realise the importance of passing on new information gained by experience rather than doing what many others do by just regurgitating stuff from in-game tutorials / manuals.

whoever decided to put that music in the trader section should be fired. this is the first mod i want.
Before selling anything to the trader in the shopping mall I would go to the crafting table right of him/her and see what you can make with what you have, as normally crafted items can be used for missions or sold to the same trader for much more than, such as that argon meat you sold for 845 credits. You can make fine food from that and two other items normally found on the trader which give you great return every time. Also look for blackmarket mission they will take illegal goods from you for good coin in bars. I also turn off auto save that sucks all the time!

Out of the NUMEROUS games I play, I've seen a lot of games re-use already existing engines and assets, but I have never seen any other game using X4's engine and assets. Yes the game is still buggy, but they're working on it. With the recent games we're getting (cough Fallout 76), I'll give them that. Once again, deep sandbox games are games that won't take you by the hands. They might seem cheap, unpolished, and like they have nothing to offer at first glance, but you do understand they have a lot to offer when you're getting into them, that's as simple as that. I would advise you to watch a tutorial if you're lost, I can understand that, or you can simply switch to another genre. I just can't let you tell this game is crap whereas it's not, it's just the way you see it (and many people do as well), but that's only the visible part of the iceberg.

Either way it's an AA studio and the game is very well done for the budget they have. I'll say it again for the last time, it's not a cheap game, and it's got a lot of complex features, but you probably know the game better than me, and obviously what engine/features it' has. However, I don't want to waste time on this, if you want to play it go on, if not then keep trashtalking about it, if that leads you anywhere...

I’ve needed this, my very first play through I managed to lose my ship? End up on a bridge that was even the same place my ship was on?! Then ended up in my space suit floating in space all alone?! As it glitched.. A great start.. 😅
Regarding the given order to you ship and why it didnt work; usually if you are on it or it is the last ship you've piloted you will have to right click the ship again and press 'procede with current orders'.

So, I guess (basing in save/load times) they did not get rid of xml format for savegames - on one hand you can edit them with text/xml editor the way you like, but save/load times on 150-200mb xml savegames is awful...
well their game save file contain a huge some of DATA so i "think" an XML format is the easier way to go in this kind of situation it also let them edit files easily to stress test some situations,
@@Yokenshiro11 on contrary, by its design XML is suited for small data and is absolutely awful on large data; i suppose they were going to switch to binary serialization but since X games are still long way from being a finished product, they focused on more pressing issues...

S C I attribute the huge save/load times to the fact that each time you save/load, you are saving and loading the entire universe. Since there are no load times, you save the entire universe and all the ships and locations, same with load
@@Schmidt334 it is because of XML - see the size of your save files ;) 8 is way too longer than storing 1 byte of hex 8... and each ware for each station each cargohold has not just quantity XML tag, but many other hierarchical tags - imagine the overhead!

1 thing that I JUST realised and wished I had known from the beginning - you can pause the game and issue orders while the game is paused 😣

Easy money at the start is shooting crystals on asteroids. Look for the sparkle on roids. Also highly recommened the mod crystal finder that makes them glow (imho this should have been the way instead of hard to see sparkles). you can easily gain a few million early on.
The crafting recipes only show up when you have ingredients for them in your inventory ;)
thanks for the effort of uploading. has someone seen a decent review of the game from a X3 player? i have tons of questions better answered by a veteran i guess. Just one thing: if you are strapped for cash - do anything but the story. : 1. scan down crystals in the system. 2. do maintenance missions. 3. automate your income through mining ships.
Yeah, lots of comments about how to condense this down. All I'll add is make a list, break every point down to a short and sweet point, video your work and then cut it down to just your point.

@@kubel83 hehe thx , I think it has something to do with mxaa x8 because I did get the flash with that on , I have a 1080 nvidia, and the game ran a little heavy so I turned it down to x4 and it runs perfect and with no flash
This menu system is so unappealing. Bolder font, colors and symbols would enhance the experience so much.
I changed the ship-controlls to .
W = increase speed.
S = Decrease speed.
Z = Strafe up.
X = Strafe down.
A = Roll left
D = Roll right.
Mouse Left = Strafe left.
Mouse Right = Strange right.
Made flying alot more... intuitive.

How do you get the map to stay still and zoom in. My map constantly drifts and is off screen making it pretty useless. Iv'e turned off Gamepad which helped a bit, but no way is it llike in your video. Great tips thanks.

Screw off. This is a channel called "gamers with jobs". The wasted 2 minutes at the start were the least of the problems. The lack of a table of contents, the meandering narrative, and bloating everything is the real issue. Channel should be called "gamers without jobs".

Harvest crystals on space rocks 30 minutes in an asteroid field will make you a cool million +
Just cruse around and look for small colored spots or at distance you'll see a small flash from the asteroids surface, shoot it and hoover up the drops, sell to vendors on stations.
How the hell did you get the framerate so smooth on the station? My PC should handle this easily at 2k in theory but fps drop to 40 or even lower at stations.. no idea why.

If you ride the superhighway, you should see 3 different factions with wharfs/shipyards. They aren't small icons, they are huge, one with a solid triangle (wharf) and one with a triangle atop two rectangles (shipyard)

Does it have SETA and can we abuse that with an automatic revenue source. I remember back in the day leaving the game on overnight in SETA and shocked how much money I made. We were very poor and it felt good to tell my wife how many millions we had.
You don't start with SETA, but it is craftable.

I have played every X game.. though I started with X2.. which imho was the best. When they dumbed down docking to suit folks who couldn't fly it bothered me. I have done 5 accts in EvE online (which isn't flight I know). Elite through Elite Dangerous, if it flew I was there! But I have to say this X game makes me feel like an idiot. Hell "Rogue Element" makes complete sense compared to this game. I bought this.. returned it.. bought it for someone else... watched a lot of YT, re-bought it.. Still feel like a moron. It's all good though. I am learning. Last night I could not figure out how to sell my ships and after half an hour I went to bed. So maybe your video showed me how an I'm gonna go try it now. Maybe with 20-30 restarts I'll have enough info to start with. I would like to know what mouth breathing window licker came up with the default config for X 52 pro flight stick. That person needs a different job next time.

Hi, assuming you mean you've already captured the ship and have control of it, you really can only transfer crew at a station -- aside from marines there doesn't seem to be a way to get crew to change ships in flight. So fly your captured ship to a dock, have a ship with the crew you want to transfer dock at that same location. Then when you talk to the crewmember or use Comms you can tell them something like "I want you to work somewhere else" and select your captured ship. Hope this helps.

@@danielOconahap unfortunately no, but if you use a marine to capture a vessel, that marine becomes its pilot and can fly it to station for you. You can hire additional crew through the upgrade ship option at Wharves and shipyards. Once the ships landed comm the pilot and tell them to work elsewhere then set them back to Marine. then use the upgrade screens to buy a full crew including (hopefully) a better captain.

Don't get too excited, it's only an hour long at most.
The X series is not very story driven, it's a sandbox game first and foremost.
Story missions often require you to build up your empire in different ways to fulfill your next objectives ie buy another ship, build a station, arm your ship up to face tougher enemies, etc. That means even if you want to concentrate on the "story", you'll have to spend most of your time doing side missions, trading, bounty hunting, pirating or managing your assets.
In general, the plot is used as a device to give you access to special benefits or stations. Off the top of my mind, in X3:TC one of the plots basically gives you a player shipyard which you can use to reverse-engineer and manufacture ships. Another one gives you access to a "Hub" sector that lets you reconfigure the gate network of the universe, allowing you to shorten your trade fleet's route, or unleashing hell on factions you hate by surrounding them with Xenon sectors.
Also, don't expect any cutscene or stellar acting. Most of the plot is delivered through your ship's comms, and voice acting along with the character models. 90s era kitsch, I like it but it's an acquired taste.
Rebirth was OK but I felt like a scavenger the whole time egar to see how this plays

Ah cool I didn't realise there is a story, people on the forums are saying there isn't one.
It's not what I'd call an in depth story, but there is a central mission chain that seems to move things forward.
Wilson, to get the main mission chain, use Scan Mode (Shift-2) and fly near stations to find a data leak that opens a comms channel. There is an in-game tutorial on how to do this stuff.
Two hours of crystal mining can easily net over $2mil. Enough to get auto miners going on that to your fledgling empire.

You forgot a very important tip probably a number 1 tip really : the game is bugged to hell, so wait a year before you play.
I've been playing the game for a good 20+ hours and am yet to encounter any bugs. Just saying.

@@drchops Even a single glance at the steam forums, just a mere browse and you see what the problem is.
Now SOME people report fewer problems, thats because the game utilizes a form or seed generating system, meaning each new game will be slightly differently seeded.
That can cause some differences, but tons of people report broken trading, mining, pilot leveling, weird fps problems or memory leaks.. and thats just from the top of my head.
Let alone the crashes (though more rare i'll admit) or weird things like 'missing AI' as in, no xenon or khaak attacks, just completely gone or not doing anything.
Latest issues seem to be more about no ships being able to be produced by the AI factories, somehow they're all out of parts all the time for no reason, no reason because no ships are being build at all.
But sure hey there are no bugs in this game.. lel.. gtfo fanboys.

Sadly those interiors of the stations are so horrible bad looking and empty, just like in their previous game. In X2 it was feeling better.
18 minutes is way too long for a "10 tips" list without some kind of chapter guide in the video description, a table of contents in the beginning, or chapter markers in the video timeline.

A very frustrating video. Some good tips that I like but you could have demonstrated them all in a few minutes instead of 18 because of the endless rambling and lack of edit.
I wish I knew what an unfinished piece of crap this game was that even 2 years later is still plagued by problems and sub-par design. I wish I could get a refund, but I blew through my Steam allotted time just trying to get this junk to run properly when it released. Save your money!
