    One niche benefit of the Jian is that it's a great craft to land on a player owned capital ship. The turrets will assist and fire depending on the settings. I've helped out my poor asgards turret coverage with a Jian before.

      I like to park 4 on the base game carriers then watch from the deck when a fighter wanders overhead. Also the only way to get even a basic level of point defense on a condor.

    A Jian fitted with flak turretes and parked on the deck of you capital ship enhances the defence against fighters extremly. Fighters can not do harm to your capital ship anyways, but wave after waves of them often pin your automated ships on a certain spot and keep it from traveling. An additional Jian solves that problem.

      Yeah however they have the turning and speed of a carrier...so no not that effective...the carrier is usually way back in the engagement as well...whereas the fighters are ahead of the carrier directly engaging first...so the arena of combat is not ABOVE the carrier itself...Plus you lose 4 docks storage as well that sucks...You could have had 4 Cobras which would actually engage the enemies with their respective fighter wings...but cant because u got no space....
      I use Zeus E Carrier, and it has space for 12 Medium and 26 Small ships, i have 8 Cobras and 4 KuraoKamis, with each having their own 2 to 4 Ares Figthers set to defend commander (Their Cobra)...Then ofcourse all the wings are subservient to the Carrier.

    One advantage not mentioned about the frigates is their ability to have a docked S-class fighter. This can be a huge benefit, particularly when using them to hunt scale pact destroyers. I have 5 Cobras with thermals, each with a Chimera running burst rays, for the purpose of capturing destroyers. 25 veteran (or elite now in my case) marines will normally overwhelm anything except a Rattlesnake, in which case just bring all 5.

      Stereotype each ship, minor shades become clearer differences that are easier to remember:
      - Nemesis: Daniel
      - Kura: Cooler Daniel
      - Dragon: WAAAARGH!
      - Dragon Raider: see above
      - Katana: _Speed!_
      - Minotaur: Baby's first gunboat
      - Peregrine: Baby's second
      - Jian: A triangle (get it? because 180° of coverage instead of 360°)
      - Cerberus: It's a bargain but I can't see
      - Gorgon: ... I got nothing, I guess it's prettier?
      - Osprey: It resembles one of those WW2 concrete sea forts, sturdy and just as immobile
      - Cobra: A pirate's life is for me!
      - Falx: Expensive and ugly
      - Minotaur Raider: It forgot it's supposed to be a military ship
      And for the Kingdom End DLC:
      - Hydra: Two fighters in a trench coat
      - Thresher: peak gunboat, just turrets taped to thrusters and a shield generator

    I still find myself in the Dragon most of the time. 6 weapon slots give great versatility and i can carry my two Heavy Swarm launchers without sacrificing gun power.
    Falx is a bit more of my fun toy for messing with the xenon stations. 4x Heavy Cluster launchers enables you to oneshot the graviton turrets and playing catn-n-mouse with the defense drone swarm is just good ol fun. The six engines make it by far the most expensive medium ship though.

    After I tried playing around with some corvets as a personal craft, I couldn't really get the hang of them. too big and bulky for my taste, and the shield recharge delay is too long to go and fight some xenon, without needing to run away and take a coffee break once in a while. Fighters can dodge all damage for long enough to charge shields back to full...
    but then I decided to try out falx as a boarding vessel and it is extremely good at it. 4 main guns, 25 marines, what's not to love? it's really easy to capture large freighters and miners with such amount of marines. If I have to board a destroyer or anything XL, I just give up with the doing it myself part, and bring a shark. I hope one day there's an option to board stations too :D

    Terran solo. This should be Terran solo. Katana is by far the best M class ship around their catagory in every aspects, and now I'm gonna explain why it is.
    1. Firepower : Someone might guess Katana is inferior to Nemesis and Dragon due to the fewer gun slots it has, but that's not true. Katana can use unique Terran exclusive weapons including Proton barrage and Meson stream, and those weapons are very impressive. M Proton barrage is basically ultimate all - around weapon, overwhelming the inferior counterparts of commonwealth. It has very fast projectile speed, burst DPS, sustained DPS and accuracy which makes it as the best anti - small and medium ship weapon. I can surely say that 4 Proton Katana is way better then 5 Gatling Nemesis in actual combat, due to the weapon superiority. And also, M Meson stream is the beast against capitals and OOS combat, literally makes Katana top on all other M class ships without any difficulty.
    2. Speed : I have no idea why the hell Katana received such an poor meter on 'Acceleration' and 'Maneuverability' in this vid, but anyone who actually used Katana would agree that It has by far the best mobility among all M class ships in the game. No other M class ship can match katana's mobility, and it makes Katana to the best player - driven ship. Remember, when there is no Jumpdrive in this game, speed becomes god.
    3. Design : Katana has the best design of all M class ships in this game, by actually inheriting the exact classic design of X3 series Katana. It is surely the best example of 'Old but Gold' case, when most of other ships become intolerably ugly by transferred to X4. I mean, just go and compare the design of X4 Argon ships to that of X3... Split Dragon is also a good example of well - implanted traditional design to X4 though.
    Yeah sure, Katana is expensive and needs to be friendly with Terran to acquire it, but even with those cons the advantages it has are too shiny to not pick it as the 'best corvette' in this game. Remember guys, Terran superiority is always core of this game, in both lore and gameplay.

    • @kajarslibrary5404
      @kajarslibrary5404 2 года назад +4

      towards 2: Mobility refers to turnrate and responsiveness to maneuvering and it is indeed in the lower end in that area. Top speed is where it shines at, enabling top-tier boom and zoom capabilities. If you put a Katana into a turn-fight with a Nemesis, the Nemesis will win most of the time as that is the Nemesis strong point and the Katanas weak point.

    • @Triaxx2
      @Triaxx2 2 года назад +1

      Unfortunately, Terran superiority entirely out weighs all the other points made, since the Terrans are the biggest jerks in the setting. At least the Kha'ak only want your minerals and the Xenon just want to perform a nice friendly terraforming operation on your face.
      Also problematic is while it is probably the absolute best ship in the game, that also makes it the least interesting. If it always wins, there's no challenge, so it's to be avoided. At least it was interesting in older games where it was limited to terran guns.

    • @zsheets7483
      @zsheets7483 2 года назад +1

      For #1: I agree with your assessment of the Meson, especially for OOS use. For my personal ship, though, I prefer the Split's thermal disintegrators. The DOT and shield bypass are wonderful for main guns, and they're a lot more forgiving when it comes to heat.

  • @herbertpocket8855

    Love the detailed breakdown!

  • @cdgonepotatoes4219
    @cdgonepotatoes4219 Год назад

    The intro pretty much aces it in the explanation: turn rate and gun mounts, and the hardiness required to take your time tracking your target or speed in a straight line to recover are what I like in the corvettes I like. Gunboats I haven't found a use for them yet but I suppose they're good in formation as mobile extra turrets while frigates sadly are universally too slow to just have as companion crafts but you can get pirating with them, perhaps drive over to a battlefield with them and then get into your docked heavy fighter.
    I found the Katana is very easy to acquire through Pioneers trade guild missions, every once in a while you'll get salvage missions where you have to claim an M-sized ship and sometimes it's a Katana. I haven't yet seen if you can do the same with other trade guilds and corvettes.
    The Minotaur Raider also comes for free if you are targeted often by Scale Plate, those guys never run on a full crew and you can use the Minotaur's disadvantages to your own advantage and make them evac with just a courier. It's a good freighter that might work as a companion if you intend to plunder L-size ships of their cargo, since it can assist against the shield without worry if it's targeted by a defensive drone or two, but in isolation it does struggle and you basically need to match the enemy's fighters in numbers if you want them to survive a convoy raid out by themselves. Still a better performance than trade ships.

    I really enjoy the Katana. Did my first Terran start and they spoiled me to pieces. They may have have garbage combat speeds, but their boost speeds or up to travel speeds are great which I didn't learn about until swapping engines with other "faster" (but not faster) engines. I swapped my personal Katana with Split Travel Engine MK3, but I couldn't beat my IS wingman Katana in boost acceleration or travel drive acceleration (which had Terran Combat Engine MK3), which caused me to fall behind the fleet. I have even seen my Osaka, YES a Destroyer, beat me in Travel Drive. That's when I found out, oh wow, so that was the tradeoff. If you play Katana, you can keep the Terran Combat Engines because they boom to max almost instantly. Another reason for Katana is their really high combat speed, almost 1k m/s (with Split Combat MK4). For these reasons, this allows you to make exceptional Quick Response Fleets, because if the AI is flying then they will drop out of Travel Drive and slowly crawl their way into battle. This can mean the difference between losing allies or saving allies. Even with IS wingman, sometimes they don't follow you right on your tail and that can leave you fighting alone and possibly dying.
    The Katana may have less guns than the Dragon, but it does have 2x the shield capacity, totaling over 18k. This helps it tremendously to survive any Burst damage before thinning out the enemies to a more manageable force. Another word of mention, because the Katana has a larger shield capacity than a Dragon, this also means you can use Boost more. If the AI is flying, you know they love to boost and love to kill their shields in the process. I don't know how duration is handled for them, either % shield health remaining, or distance from target etc.. Regardless, it is fairly durable in comparison to the Dragon.
    Also to boot, though the Nemesis is a fine line that has 5 guns, filling the gap between Dragon and Katana, and 18k shields, same as Katana, it can be a good middle ground corvette. However, the Nemesis is far slower than the Katana and may not be a good QRF choice.
    Katana can work wonders in OOS, if built properly, though they will cost a fortune. As someone may have already stated, a Katana loaded with Meson Streams will blap most things out of existence really fast. Because of how OOS works, they're way too good for anti-S and anti-M duty. Though it can be challenging, a Katana can kill some L ships. When I had a Xenon force try to break Matrix 451, all I had was 5 Katanas. I wiped out well over 30-40 S and M ships and 2 Ks, with no losses. Though they are extremely expensive, and if you don't have the cash or Terran DLC, any other craft with similar stats, but built with Plasma Cannon MK2 works just fine.

    My uses for M ships :
    I use moded corvetes with ~1k cruise speed as sort of hit and run team . Hitting priority targets in fleet combat, chasing pirates, hunting miners/traders behind enemy lines . I never make many of them, but a small fleet of fast nukers is a great tool in any commanders arsenal. Just dont expect them to lead battles of attrition.
    I also keep a small (6~) fleet of drone and laser tower loaded frigates for quick responses against xenon invasions. they can quickly travel to the hotspot and drown enemy fighters in fire while avoiding capitals until big hitters arrive. All in all frigates have very much potential, consumables are very cheap and effective, but the real downside- it takes lots of micromanagement to use them effectively. And one has to learn it too so i understand why some people find them underwhelming.
    Talking of underwhelming gunboats are simply bad, theres nothing they can do, others couldnt do better and more...

      X4 doesn't really have a "paper-rock-scissors" mechanic, instead they give you lots of options to choose your own way. Nothing wrong with not using the medium ships if your playstyle doesn't mesh with them. If you want to experiment with these vessels Id recommend starting with sector patrol focusing on Kha'ak and Xenon raiding parties. See how they work compared to fighters and go from there

      If you have Argon All-around Engines Mk 3 and you're going full bore at 6000km/s, you should hit the brakes somewhere between 30-35 km away from a station. You can use 20-25km as a guideline for approaching combat at-speed, because hopefully your turrets will properly aggro your target, and also they'll be rushing at you in many cases.

    Can you please talk about what ships to use when building a beginner fleet when you are down with ship guides?

    • @Mikalent
      @Mikalent 2 года назад +2

      Late, but Early game if you are building a combat fleet, generally you want Argon Small fighters, and Teladi/Terran mediums. Due to the short life expectancy of small ships, Argon tend to be preferred, the cheap cost of purchase, with a decent firepower and average speed and maneuverability, the somewhat lower survivability is negated by the low survivability of fighters in general, especially in out of system (OOS) combat, and cheap cost per fighter.
      Mediums and larges are where you want survivability. You obviously want to be in system, as OOS HEAVILY favors Capital Ships. Terran Larges you especially want to be in system, as OOS favors turrets for damage calculations as opposed to main batteries with Large ships. Terrans have some really bad turret damage, but their main guns are arguably the best, capable of destroying Xenon Ks with 2 heat cycles of the main batteries, which is extremely quick.
      As a secondary aside, if you start running combat fleets of S and M class ships, rush an Auxiliary Class XL ASAP, does not matter which one, doesn't matter if it is armed, get one, keep it safe. Auxiliary ships provide free (Yes FREE, no hull parts or energy cells needed) for S and M class ships, they can also replenish consumables such as missiles, mines, laser turrets and crew, but the Auxiliary ship has to have a stock of them first. The main benefit is the repairs.

      @@Mikalent quick note: i play x4 more like a strategy game, so i love to build station, production lines, shipyards and stuff. so: i build my fighter/patrol fleets around balaurs or ares's since they are good all-rounders. ares has more survivability and balaur is more agile. but balaur is harder to obtain considering all split reputational nuances. i also consider mamba is secong best fighter after previous two, based on sum of his characteristics. terran ships are out of my comparison since they require separate processing line and i dont like it.

      @Mikalent Год назад

      @@angeltensey fully understandable, I prefer Terran for In system combat (ISC) just due to their general tank states, high DPS, and the ability to Micro Warp Jump with their drives, I would also argue the Terran economy is much more streamlined, with only 4 products, 3 of which you just need the basic resources for.
      Beyond that, yeah, Community of Planets. The only reason I don't favor Spit ships as much is their expensive nature of chewing through Engine Parts to make even basic MK1, and just how cheap Argon stuff is.
      I also don't mind using Argon stuff if it means I can prolong the Paranid Civil War, and my continued arms deals to both sides to finance my campaign against the Xenon.

Drone controls are a bit wonky, but by playing with escort/attack all , armed /disarmes and fleet commands from map - it is possible to control the swarm reasonably well. Aux ships launch drones almost instantly also, it just takes ages to dock all of them :D ( yesterday i used drone loaded stork with all dumbfire turrets + 9 bombers to succesfully strike down full xenon invasion of one I, 2 K and bunch of fighters.) Only lost one bomber and half the drones .

It destroys everything except Capital class, destroyers melting from mesons, fighters melting from protons on Katanas. I forgot what is fighter class. They are more expensive, much more, but in the end it turns out to be many times more efficient and cheaper. Frigates: Combat engineer. Alone they can't do much. Their job is to lay traps for the enemies, placing minefields, laser turret fields, and then lure them in with missiles and drones.

But the thought of either having to stick to a Minotaur or Cerberus as my player M size ship is just unpalatable and though their fighter selection is a good deal better, S class ships aren't for me as my personal go-to ship.
    The ZYA Cobra really spoiled me rotten. And if I ever wanted something absolutely nutty to zip around in, a modded Dragon Raider can reach ludicrous speed in the truest Spaceballs sense of the meaning. But M ships have their role for sure, consumables are VERY powerful in this game, some are great at transporting marines, some are mini drone fleet carriers, 100 missle slots is also unique for fighters. And personally i always keep a very fast corvete QRF squad to hunt down pirates, khaak and any other pests, because in some cases AI needs >800 cruise speed to even catch up with bloody pirates. All in all i love M ships, its a shame they are somewhat inadequately priced ( good falx costs as much as entry level destroyer..
