    Being a Canadian, we have experienced the same drills crossing into the USA, we were once detained for HOURS because they found a kiwi and orange that had rolled to to the corner of our car trunk that we did not notice!

    Oooo my dear Carolyn: It was so interesting to see how you reacted when you were interrogated by those agents 😊. I came from a former communist country Hungary, where those practice was absolutely “normal” when we crossed any Eastern Europian country border. Sometimes we were held there for hours and needed to take out absolutely everything from the car. And when finally we were released, they gave us the look, what sent a chill through our bones. And I’m talking about crossing our friends border, not crossing the western Europian magic gate. Because those gates was closed in front most of us. So when I saw kind of similar happened with you here at the Canadian border I was really surprised. I never imagined that kind of treatment to see ever! Specially not here. But all I can tell you this little episode just reminded you and all of us, how blessed we are here in the USA. And how free we are. Dear have a wonderful and safe trip and I’m looking forward to see your jurney through the internet. Carmen

    Howdy Carolyn! I drove a motor coach to Canada once. They checked every passenger on the bus. We had to fill out forms. I was taken aback because once we entered Canada, I realized it was true. We were in another country.

    That’s normal....drove from Florida to Fairbanks Alaska via Montana back in 95 when my husband was in the military. That was in one vehicle going there. Coming back 4 years later we were in separate vehicles as we had some of his family with us. Talk about 20 questions !!!!! Making sure our answers were the same !!!!

    I take it you've never crossed the border? That's the normal treatment. You'll get used to it. You thought that was bad? You wait until you cross back into the U.S.

I was really beginning to wonder if they were going to let us back into our own country! We got inspected and the works. It was one of the most nerve- wracking things I have ever been through.

    When I was young, I went to Canada with my parents, this was before needing a passport, but we were stopped and they asked my dad, "What nationality are you?" He is sitting there, not saying anything, and I am trying to whisper American, your American! The guy heard me and my dad said "Well It's not like you get asked that everyday!" We all had a good laugh.

    A few years back I was working in Washington and decided to take a day trip to Vancouver. I spent over an hour answering their silly-assed questions and watching my vehicle being searched. After being interrogated, Customs finally told me to have a "nice day" in Canada, I replied "where do I make a U turn, I'm going back home, you can stick this place!" Never again...

    Normal questions for entering another country. We are Canadian and travel to the U.S. regularly and feel lucky when we don't have to pull over and they (Americans) inspect our R.V. inside thoroughly. And that happens almost every time. So you got off lucky.! Enjoy your travels! :)

  • @5avan10

    If you're anything like me... I get simultaneously both indignant and anxious whenever I'm put into a position where I feel like I have to explain or justify myself, my lifestyle, or my behavior to anyone for any reason. I'm self employed because I can't work for an employer due to this issue, and I get extremely nervous just being around police for the same reason, even though I'm a very law-abiding person.

    • @johnhouchins3156
      @johnhouchins3156 5 лет назад

      But you understand they have every right to determine whom they're going to let into their country, right? You have NO right to enter another country. You're PERMITTED to enter and much of that is determined by your first impression to the person asking all those "invasive" questions.

    Hi, I found your channel after searching for videos about Nomadland which I watched last night. I'd never heard of Lytton, BC until recently when the temperature broke heat records, and then because of the wildfires which have sadly burned the town to the ground. Yesterday a friend posted that it was where she began her nursing career 40yrs ago so my jaw dropped when you mentioned this little place that was completely unknown to me only a week or two ago. Small world.

    I always hated crossing the border into the states. We always had to pull over and get out of our rig and they seached the inside of the motorhome and inside all the outside compartments. They wanted to know how much money we were bringing in and asked if we were married. They also took away all our cat food except they let us keep enough for one meal for our cat. It was always very traumatizing so I understand how you felt

They asked me if we didn’t have shopping malls in Ontario. Asked me about cash I was carrying. Made us all show a pay stub receipt to prove we had jobs in Ontario. Somehow they can make you feel dishonest when we are not!!!

      Nurse Karen, you have to remember, they are doing as they have been trained! For all they know, you could be a very bad person...and it's up to 'them' to figure out if that's the case! If, for instance, you truly where a bad person, and got by all the questions without being detected, and you then harmed a person in the country you where going....who's fault would that be? If folks found out that you had gotten through the border, it would be the border guard taking the heat for allowing you in! I just find it's best to put yourself in their shoes, and realize they're just trying to keep everyone safe, and following the rules.

    • @cheryl8280
      @cheryl8280 6 лет назад +4

      Nurse Karen I firmly believe ALL border customs people are real jerks, Canadian and Americans alike. I think a person has to have a miserable attitude to get the job. Give those assholes a uniform and they become power hungry. I've flown and driven across the border many, many times and only once did I have a half way civilized individual "cross examine" me. If that's supposed to be a deterrent they're going about it the wrong way. On behalf of MOST Canadians, I'm very sorry you had to go through that. Very unsettling especially if you are travelling alone. Please enjoy the remainder of your trip to Alaska.

      That's hardly fair, though. The gendarmes make you nervous, then get suspicious because you're nervous. Christ, you're damned if you do and damned if you don't. Reminds me of this scene from _Glengarry Glen Ross:_

    We don't use miles-its kilometers. We are on the metric system. It was a big change for us older folks n took awhile to adapt to. Keep us posted I am so excited for you. You said May but we are in June. You must be exhausted

      Malka Ringel most of our newer US cars have your meter system on our speedometers so that's helpful. I usually ask my husband to figure out the difference in miles for me (which helps me figure our arrival time)

    Awwww I wish I could give you a hug in that moment. I know how you feel dear...Get a nice hot coffee and shake that negativity off... Love your videos!!! Solo car camper with my 3 bambinos... Your videos have helped me emotionally and given us hope. When were not boondocking I always keep an eye open at night esp having a high profile car. Sometimes I'll just crank my baby up and go for a drive on sleepless nights. Then when sun up I'll go to a local park let the kids play while I nap.

    Did they tear your RV apart searching it? That would have been a worse case scenario. Hate when that happens.

    Wow things have changed, several years ago we went to Niagara Falls NY & decided to go over to the Canadian side & all there was one single Canadian Mounty in as small shack who asked us only two questions: (#1) Why are coming to Canada?: Answer =To see the Falls (#2) How long will your stay be In Canada? Answer:= However long it takes to see the Falls, Maybe an hour I guess. And that was it, no passport then, the questions were just a formality.

    Wow Carolyn, you were clearly shook by that interrogation at the boarder. Now that you’re in Canada - take a deep cleansing breath & ENJOY the rest of the journey 😎🚐

    Enjoying your northern adventure so far. Last time we went through the Canadian border the interview was so quick it may have been unnecessary for me to apply the brakes on the RV as we approached the guard shack, LOL.

    Those are all normal questions that I have been asked going to the States or coming back from there. Although asking how much you make is a bit odd.

      We learned this when disembarking a ship in Vancouver following an Alaskan cruise. A DUI 25 - 30 years ago will keep my husband from entering that country again. We were afraid they would charge us a fee as they did others in the “holding area”. Where’s the grace?

    A great quiet place to visit is Hatcher's Pass in Wasilla. My dog just loves roaming there. And it's a quiet summer place not many know about. And there are tons of berries to pick up there. I seen 3 foxes, 4 moose and a bear up there Sunday night!

    The border crossing near Moosehead Lake in Maine, going into Quebec, had one person working when I crossed several years ago.
