Winter Tips & Tricks to survive the cold weather!
Whether you’re new to a cold weather state like Minnesota or just not used to cold and snowy winters, you might be wondering how to make it through the winter months. Fear not - I’m here to help with some tips and tricks for surviving a Minnesota winter with ease…or at least make it a little more enjoyable.
But, before we get into it I’m Darin Bjerknes and I’ve lived in Minnesota my whole life I’m going share the secrets that I’ve learned over the years. I’m also a local Realtor, and one of the owners of a real estate team called Minnesōtan. So if you’re looking for help buying or selling from the South Twin Cities Metro to the North Shore of Duluth we have you covered!
Just reach out and let us help! Now back to the tips and tricks!
I’m going to fire through these tips quickly so I hope you’re ready. Be sure to stick around for the last tip, which could be the most important to whether you’ll enjoy a Minnesotan winter or be miserable.
Tip 1. Don’t stick your tongue to anything metal. But if you want to try it, make sure you have a cup of warm water nearby.
Tip 2. With the dry and cold temps your skin will get very dry so make sure to lotion up after your showers or you’ll start to get scaly and chapped.
Tip 3. Carry some chapstick in your pocket or purse. You have to keep the lips in tip-top shape.
Tip 4. It’s going to get dark much earlier during the winter months so make sure to plan accordingly.
Tip 5. Carry some good hand warmers with you. You never know when they’ll come in handy.
Tip 6. Carry a small shovel in the back of your vehicle just in case you slide into some deep snow or to help someone else that’s stuck.
Tip 7. Get a car starter on your vehicle. This is especially important if you’re parking outside. Being able to start your car from the inside is a wonderful luxury. It’s also great stepping into a warm vehicle.
Tip 8. Make sure to carry a quality snow scraper and brush. You’ll often have to brush snow off your vehicle or scrape off some ice so you can see prior to driving. If you’re in a pinch and you don’t have a scraper you could use that Starbucks gift card or any plastic card to get the job done.
Tip 9. Get a vehicle that has a heated steering wheel and seat warmers. This is more of a luxury and you’ll be glad to have them when we have below zero temps.
Tip 10. When you’re driving with multiple people in your vehicle your windows will most likely frost up. To counter this make sure to have your defrost turned up all the way so you can see out your windows.
Tip 11. Winter tires are a blessing. Winter tires have better tread and are made for winter weather. Your all-weather tires may be okay, but you’ll definitely feel the difference if you invest in some good winter tires. You’ll want to swap your winter tires out for your normal tires in the spring because your winter tires will wear out really fast in the warmer temps.
Tip 12. Get a vehicle with all-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. Once again, you’ll feel much safer driving in winter weather with this option.
Tip 13. Don’t let your gas tank get under half full if you can, especially on longer trips. You don’t want to run out of fuel driving in the winter.
Tip 14. If you need to drive to work or just be somewhere at a certain time and it snowed or is currently snowing, make sure to give yourself an extra 1/2 hour to get where you’re going. Traffic slows down and there is bound to be a fender bender or a vehicle sliding into the ditch due to driving too fast for the conditions or because they had bad tires. Giving yourself plenty of time will ease your anxiety so you can take it nice and slow. Stick to the right lane and watch out for the crazy’s driving too fast in the left lane.
Tip 15. Make sure you use the “Purple” windshield fluid for the winter months instead of the original blue fluid. The purple fluid has more of a de-icer, so it won’t freeze to your windshield as easily. You don’t want your front windshield icing up while you’re driving.
Tip 16. If you’re going to be parked and it’s snowing or sleeting make sure to put your window wipers up so they don’t freeze to your windshield. If they get full of snow or iced up they won’t work as well when you need them. Another hack is putting long socks over your wiper blades during a storm so they don’t get iced up.
