This is the type of review RUclips needs. Honest but not disparaging to the brand or based on brand preference. I really appreciate it. You are 💯accurate as well. I think I will possibly buy the R5mii, although I had always planned on a r3 or r1. The R5mii is a flagship at an r5 price. Can’t really beat that. I do mostly shoot stills and working to improve and build my wedding business. Either way I actually love features of the R1 and R3 more than a high mega pixel camera, but I also love clog2, false colors and full size HDMI. Get all that an 4k 120 with R5mii. Great options available either way.
That was my goal with this video - and honest, as unbiased as possible, review that I would benefit from if I hadn't taken the time to do all the research myself. And totally with you on the R5II, hard to beat the features and price point. Thanks for watching!
The R5Mk ll was out of stock for me a week ago so I opted for the kit with the 24 to 105 mm lens even though I already have one. I am selling the newer lens. For the week that I have owned the camera I am very impressed and happy with my purchase.
You don't understand how the R3's eye-controlled AF works. You use it to identify the subject, hit the button, then the camera tracks that subject EVEN if you look elsewhere to confirm your composition. If you want to track a different subject, you look at the different subject, hit the button, then that subject is tracked. It doesn't keep you from looking around the frame. Eye-controlled AF in the R3 does not move focus around the frame. It tracks your eye position, but only locks focus when you hit the button. It functions very much like the smart controller, only faster because it responds to your eye.
I’ll absolutely have to look into this - it hadn’t been my experience that it worked this way but maybe I had some settings set up wrong! Appreciate the tip 🤙🏼
Nice take on these. I agree with you about the R5 Mk II. I think it will be very ubiquitous in the near future and for some years to come. However, I'm going to see what my local shop offers on the R3 now. Might be a good time to snag it, especially if it's still getting regular software updates. Thanks for the review. If you come through Germany and want to link up for any events/content shoots/photo walks/etc, let me know.
Such an amazing and honest video Josh. This is the best review I’ve seen of the two new cameras from Canon. Owning the 1DX Mark III and the R5, still I don’t feel the need to upgrade, although the R5II is so tempting 😊.
The R5 has less noise and better DR than the Mark II. It makes no sense to change, if you don't need the upgraded AF system for sports, actions or wildlife.
Dear Josh, thank you for your videos, always very well made and very, very useful. I’m a photographer who still uses film, and I have always used Canon. I’m thinking about switching to mirrorless, and I have a question for you. I hope I’m not overstretching your patience. Is the R3 suitable for landscape photography? I mainly print photography books and A1 prints sometimes, and I’d like to avoid the R5 because of its shape; the R3 is very similar to the bodies I’m used to. Thank you for your response. I wish you all the best in your work and in life.
Josh if you were to compare the auto focusing on the R3 to the R5 Mk II , which one do you think is better ???? . I do bird photography so doing birds and flight is very critical .
I'd guess the R52 is going to be a touch better because it's a newer system (whereas the R1 will have some noticeable improvements overall)...but I think they're going to be pretty similar!
I have been considering a new R3 since it is so much less than the R1. I shoot Friday night lights and some gym sports. It is an upgrade to my old 1dx and my R6, but still stuck with my old ef 300 f2.8 version 1, I have never heard anyone really promote an R3, so I hesitate. Now hearing you say you like a Sony over your R3, I hesitate again.. If Canon ever gets the ef 300 version 2 in stock, I thought it might match up well with the R3 plus ef to r adapter The ef and rf 400 is out of my price range.. Thanks for sharing.
Absolutely depends on your workflow and needs. R1 would be the king for sports/action whereas the A7RV is more suited for portraits/landscapes/high-res needs where you don't need insane speed/buffer rates/etc.
Man if the R5ii shot in 4K60 oversampled like the R3 it would be the best. So 4K60 will be line skipped on the R5ii and not be as tac sharp as the R3 ughh. And like you said, the R1 just doesn't have enough mind blowing upgrades to make a jump from the R3. The R3 is just so dang good, even today.
thanks for the video Josh. I own the R5 and R3. I use the R5 in studio and R3 for anything out like weddings etc. I've been waiting to add a new camera. Trying to figure out between the 2 new ones. I like the R3 better. It molds perfectly in my hands and great auto focus. I don't shoot video, so that party doesn't make a difference for me. Do you know what camera is better for Dynamic Range? The R5ii sounds amazing, but I think the R1 is a better system in low light? I don't shoot sports but I move a lot while shooting and same for the wedding at the party! I'm right in the middle of things so AF is important for a lot of my photography.
None, your cameras are still top tier and you dont need to upgrade. New cameras havent introduced anything worth making a jump. The R1 AI af is only worth if youre shooting sports because of predictive af, thats it.
So honestly you have a really killer setup currently - you definitely don’t need the R1 and the R3 is SO good with dynamic range! If I were you, I’d stick with that setup unless you start needing more video-centric features or start shooting a looottt more action.
With the release of the R1 causing the price drops of the R3, would this be a good time to upgraded to an R3 from an R6. I shoot my son’s youth hockey (14u) games with an R6 and a RF70-200 2.8 or RF24-105 2.8. I was planning to skip the R6mkII and wait for the R6mkIII but the R3 looks great. What’s your opinion?
This is a GREAT time to upgrade to the R3! The R3 is still such a solid camera and would be perfect for what you’re shooting. My only qualification would be to make sure you get it for less than the cost of the new R5II as the new R5 is VERY similar to the R3 with even a few extra features and I wouldn’t want to spend more on a used R3 if I could get a new R5II for the same or less.
@@joshrexfordI'm just barely discovering your channel, and you make great content! I have an R8 with a battery grip, and will be upgrading in about two weeks. I've wanted the R3 all this time, but with the release of the R5II and now watching/ reading hands-on reviews with it, I've come to the conclusion that the R5II is likely the better choice. The two main things that the R3 would give me which I want is the integrated grip/ pro body as well as the significantly larger buffer. I really want those features, even though I realize that I'll likely not need the R3's huge buffer and that I can purchase a battery grip for the R5II. B&H is currently selling the R3 brand new for $4k and the R5II is $4,300. I primarily shoot portraits, family; have done engagement, wedding and reception photos and the likes; but have just started shooting sports more regularly with a 300mm f/2.8L II with our four kids (three in middle school and one in 1st grade); football, flag football, volleyball, baseball and softball, lacrosse, swim; something all year long. So... your honest recommendation... for me, would you ultimately recommend the R3 or the R5II, given that they're practically the same price? Thank you!
I got a 5D MkII, and I want to upgrade ! But +4k$ (6k+ in CAD) for the R5 mkII ? Really ? To me, it a 2900$ camera. So I have a family wedding comming up, and sure I would love the R5 II for it, but after taking picture of the signing event, my 5D mkII picture look amazing. I will have for the main wedding ceremony 3 Blackmagic camera, 2 Insta360 camera and I'll take picture with my 5D mkII !
Ok. I have the r5c, pre-ordered the r5 mark ii. My question is what is actually better/newer, best feature rich and innovative brand and model out right now? I have an rf lense but only one so i am still in a safe position to move to other brands.
Do you see what they are offering to give you for the R3, it’s ridiculous!! I preordered the R5 ii but I’m keeping my R3. My husband says I have to sell something but there is nothing that I’m willing to sell to get practically nothing in return!
If you don't need the 45 megapixels, than the R3 is the better option. The R3 has much better DR, much lower noise and you can shoot much more images with a battery. Beside that, the R3 is more solid and wheatherproof.
Canon shooter here. I currently use the Canon R3. I will be upgrading to the Canon R1 and will also purchase a Canon R5 MkII. My Canon R3 is a true beast and I shoot sports on a regular basis. With that being said I love my Canon R3 but will be purchasing as I said before the Canon R1. Some people are saying that there will not be a continuation of the Canon R3. I can believe this. And here's my reasoning why. A part of me wants to think that the Canon R3 was a phenomenal TEST BED because a lot of the features that are in the R3 have shown up in the R5 MkII. And by them doing this it just proves that if they wanted to they could have put more resolution and a bigger sensor into the Canon R1. Because when you think about it the R5 Mark II has a 45 megapixel sensor with a lot of the specs that are in the R3 and a few that are also in the R1. Just think about that for a moment and marinate on that and let me know what your thoughts are if any from anybody who reads this. In closing I will say this. Possibly in four more years when the Canon R1 MkII arrives don't be surprised if it has possibly a 33 or 36 or even 40 megapixel sensor. And honestly it doesn't even need a global shutter.

Apparently Canon has said the R3 is not going anywhere
