    Hi Alec your machinist friend got that idea from thread cutting on a lathe. You use 3 small wires to measure the depth of the thread you are cutting then compare it to an existing bolt of that pitch to see how much more to take off. Btw you are using a vernier not a micrometer they do the same thing only the latter is more precise. Neat trick though. Take care Owen m

    Yep those are vernier calipers. Or we jokingly call them “very nears” 😊 you successfully did what we call “ measuring over wire”. Thanks for sharing sir
