Portland Bill Drone Flight FORTS and FORBIDDEN CITY

  • The Island of Portland Bill has some interesting fortifications and 2 prisons and due to the restricted access is best viewed by drone. I am uncertain if this footage was not uploaded to the channel by error, so if this is a duplicate I apologise.
The term frbidden city is what has been given to the dockland area which was so large that it was considered by locals to be a city and being offlimits then earned the city the title forbidden. Most of the military presence has gone from the area so the forbidden title is probably no longer deserved.
Portland Bill is a narrow promontory (or bill) at the southern end of the Isle of Portland, and the southernmost point of Dorset, England. One of Portland's most popular destinations is Portland Bill Lighthouse. Portland's coast has been notorious for the number of shipwrecked vessels over the centuries. The dangerous coastline features shallow reefs and the Shambles sandbank, made more hazardous due to the strong Portland tidal race.[1]
The Bill is an important way-point for coastal traffic, and three lighthouses have been built to protect shipping. The original two worked as a pair from 1716, and they were replaced in 1906 by the current one.[1]

Also something else you may interested to know. The stone column you started the video over is often referred to as Nicky's Knob and you are correct it was left by the quarrymen as a reference to how much stone was taken and to show the height of the original land. Also the building behind the knob is very unusual its use is currently undisclosed as far as I can tell. I went up and looked over to it's roof one day and all the sand or material inside had pushed up with such pressure it was lifting the roof off and in places it has done this many times since it's construction. It possibly indicates the material is being pushed up from under ground with force as the machinery that potters around the building has blue and red flashing lights on the grill indicating some kind of mining operation perhaps. The building I am referring to is in shot at 1 minute 14 seconds. At 1.29 you can clearly see all the patchwork repairs on the roof where material has pushed it all up. I was also detained and questioned in the port area a few years back by several huge special forces people the normal police and a civilian retired RSM that I recognised from my time in the army. When he tersely told me not to walk under the barrier as military people like to do and I looked at him with a sideways look he denied all knowledge of being in the military and went all coy and made himself scarce. It's a strange place in that port and not at all as it seems I can very much assure you.

Excellent flying, Matt. The main part of Portland ROTOR is that suspicious lump in the Prison Moat (Gorge). The emergency exit used to come up into the Moat. The Portland Bunkers Ltd building used to be a guardhouse for the now demolished HMS OSPREY (not to be confused with RNAS OSPREY which was the RN helicopter training base). Between 1968-70+ HMS OSPREY became one of the most important Central Government wartime dispersal sites in the UK. It was one of four land-based PYTHON Sites. PYTHON Sites replaced the former Central Government War HQ under Corsham (BURLINGTON etc) on 01 May 1968. After that date, BURLINGTON then became a decoy site for the PYTHON concept until the end of the Cold War. What you have there is excellent footage of a place from which the new Prime Minister might have ruled the UK, if his PYTHON Site survived the nuclear attack.

I have always really enjoyed Drone footage. As a child, I used to have flying dreams from what is now known as a Drone's eye view of places I've never been or close to home they always are my most favourite dreams.

I live on Portland and mentioned in one of your previous videos that you should come and visit. Such a shame that there are so many blocked off and restricted access areas but I do believe that there are ways to access these places if you know the right people

Very interesting video, I was based at the old Osprey in 67/68, halfway up the hill on the back road shown in your video, much better seeing the place from above rather than trunching up or down that leg tiring road.

Back in the late 70's, I spent a week at HMS Osprey, which at the time, was land based. I believe it was something to do with anti-submarine research. I was there as a Sea Cadet, but I didn't end up joining the navy, but it was fun learning how to fire a .303 rifle. We also got the chance to go out on a "target towing tug". Basically a tug boat that tows out a floating platform with targets mountred on it that are used for target practice for fighter jets. HMS Osprey occupied some of the land you showed in the drone footage. In fact that flag pole at 3:41 may well have been theirs in the past.

Thanks Matt, i absolutely love Portland so this was a real treat. Ive only seen photos of the forbidden city before so it was great to see the drone footage. I went walking there once and was turned away by the port authority at the main gate. The cafe at the top where the big radar station is is quite nice, great views of the bay and there are some abandoned buildings up there once used by military officers, quite interesting to poke around. Cheers

04:27, in front of the green cabbed tanker, three anti-air platforms? With possibly a fourth overgrown? Perfect spot for them too, I could be wrong. 06:15 another circular walled structure with a walk way in.

Matt also also also from my experience living there day to day you could do worse than focus on the Verne as it is a citadel that has housed and still does I think radar and other sensitive equipment, but since it was changed to a sex offenders prison all the prison vans have stopped going up and down and there isn't the daily barrage of traffic at shift change time. I have become deeply suspicious of its current use and am not at all sure if it used as a prison at all. It is my belief that all the sensitive sights are connected by underground workings and the entrance or a entrance to the rotor tunnel is in fancys farm behind the citadel. Also you show the buildings with the patchwork roof again at 7.46 and you can clearly see the proximity to the citadel. Also the channel or moat you mentioned was cut when the citadel was built and most of it was used to build the breakwater. They rent the stone from Albion Stone I believe.

Portland is a fantastic place to visit and I know it very well, having been there many times over the years, but this part of the island was always an intriguing mystery to me. It was a part you could never get anywhere near, so seeing this footage is fascinating. It’s a much bigger area than I thought. Looking at it though, I’m kind of puzzled why it’s still ‘sensitive’. It all looks pretty deserted. I actually though the M.O.D. were no longer there. This is definitely the sort of thing drones were made for. By the way, what is this bunker that you keep mentioning?

I love Portland, I want to move there. Such a lot going on in a tiny place, sad it's been so ravaged by quarrying, losing it's stone circle, demolished to build the prison (that's now a youth detention centre), I mean they coud have just moved it all a bit or the left or right? The islanders begged not to lose their stone circle but still they did, very sad, also the hill fort (now the prison). So it's been vandalised & had the guts ripped out of it but still manages to be beautiful & have rare flora & fauna. I'd not seen this site so thanks I now know what's there. You made me laugh too! The port is missing a trick for sure, it's listed so why not fix it up a bit so people can pay to go look around? It would be a huge tourist attraction. No instead they try & build incinerators & moor up controversial barges. Duh!
