    My dad always told he’d rather have an extension cord or a garden hose rather than a parachute if he had to jump out of a plane. He said it’s guaranteed that the extension cord or garden hose would get caught on something on the way down.

    Start your braid at the fold end. Incase you only need 10' of your 100' braided cord. Pull out enough to git er dun, braid it back up from where ya stopped.

    Understated here -- and crucial to making Over-Under work -- is the way he 1:20 *finger-twists the cord* as he lays down the loops. That's the hard part, learning which direction to twist. And if you start with a cord that has a helical, spring-like pattern in it, this method is nearly impossible. You need to first "unwind" those coils. But it's worth it. The big benefit to this method is when you unwind the cord it's much less likely to have those loops that stick up and trip people.

  • @akaredcrossbow
    @akaredcrossbow 3 года назад +4

    I’ve been doing the braided cord for about 17 years now after a co worker showed me how to do it, but I do it the other way. Start at the middle of the cord so you can pull out what you need not 50 feet at one time. It’s easy to put back together and it never gets tangled.

    I've bought a couple of the simple screw in bike hooks, put them in my 2x4 studs in the garage and wrap the cord around them, kind of like the elbow wrap. I also mounted them close to outlets so I can plug one end in and I am all set.

    • @ptorq
      @ptorq 3 года назад +1

      The braid is long, but has the advantage that it's too thick to easily tangle with other cords. If you're carrying a dozen coiled extension cords to a job site in a box, by the time you get there you won't have twelve coils, you'll have maybe two coils and one knot with 20 ends. If you braid the cords first you can throw them in the box and easily pick them out one at a time with no tangles.

    • @debbielippitt9359
      @debbielippitt9359 2 года назад +1

      @@ptorq If you start the braid at the folded end(not the end with the plugs) you can easily un-braid a small section if you don't need the whole cord ..then re braid up the small section you used. Don't start braiding(actually it is crocheting) at the plugs.

    Got a pro tip for you DIY Guy.
    You're doing your braid wrap backward.
    Don't start at the plugs. Instead, start the knot in the middle of the cord and braid toward the plugs.
    You're able to secure the braid by plugging the tips together and by doing it this way you can unplug the cord and release as many loops of the braid as necessary to get the job done.
    Now you don't have to re-braid the entire thing every single time you use it.
    Try it. You'll never go back to the other way.

    for the third method, use a rope tied in a loop about 8" diameter. Pull the loop through the center of the extension cord, then through the center of the rope loop and pull tight. The loop holds the cord tight and you can easily hang the loop from a nail or hook.

I’ve watched probably 5 people undo it from the wrong end and spend 20 minutes pulling the whole cord through each loop, cracks me up. Technically 4 people because one guy did it twice an was yelling “ who the F keeps tying all these knots in the cord!!!” 🤣 😂 hahaha good times

    At last I have found this method.
    I first met it many years ago in water safety where it used to be used to tie a lifeline to a lifebelt as it stowed the line without tangling. One end was tied to the belt and the other to a post. In a emergency the lifebelt can be removed from the post thrown to the casualty, and line would unravel quickly and without tangling.
    These days, vandals would mess about with it or even steal the lifebelt and / or the lifeline.

    I prefer the "6ft Loop", you start with the Male end in your left hand (or right if you prefer), you straighten your arms, sliding the cord through you right hand, pinch the cord between the right thumb and pointer finger and bring it to your left hand, making a loop, you repeat this process until the entire cord it done, you will end up with an approximately 3' loop, and the Male and Female ending will meet , which you them plug into each other. You will need something to hold the loops together, but it works great. There are no sharp turns and it hangs on a wall, loop, or whatever you want beautifully. I actually hang mine from bungycords based on gauge and length. I just put a screw in a the side of a wall stud, skip a few studs and put in a second screws to secure the bunny to

  • @notcharles
    @notcharles 3 года назад +1

    I use a reel. One way, leave the female connector at the hub and wind the cord on the reel leaving the MALE connector exposed. Then, when using the cord start at the electrical outlet, plug the cord in and walk back to the location the the work/tool you need to power. Or, find the center of the cord and start wrapping the center at the hub leaving bit male and female connectors exposed after the cord is fully wrapped about the reel. Then leave the (FEMALE) receptacle connector at the work and unwind the cord half way to the electrical outlet you will plug it into.

    • @aminormaximum2446
      @aminormaximum2446 5 лет назад

      This way might be simple, but it is not the best way. Using this method you have to inside the whole thing to use it. Start from the other end, and pull out what you need, with the male end going one way and the female going the other. The middle stays together, that is, what you don't need of the middle. When you are done with it, you simple re-roll what you used, and, ¡viola! It is back as it was with minimal effort....

  • @jeffd8465
    @jeffd8465 2 года назад

    the braided wrap IMO was done wrong don't tie the knot in the line, instead plug the ends in and then pull it through your hand to get to the middle. keeping the loop of the made give it a half turn and braid it like this video shows and when you get to the plug ends you pull them apart and put one of the ends through the knot loop and plug the ends back together.
    doing this will keep things clean, not over twist the wires, and it allows you to undo it to the length you need without taking the whole thing apart. I've even found that you can secure one of the plug ends with something then walk with the other one in your hand and the line will undo itself as you go.

      Over under is great for audio and lighting, because you can leave the cables coiled on the ground and hook it up to the lighting, and when you raise the truss, everything just uncoils without a hitch.
      But if you've got a new guy on the crew, he's going to knot it all up. Over under turns into 50 knots if you start with the wrong side.

    Wrapping the cord around your elbow, will cause you more problems a year or so down the road..all your doing is twisting the copper wire inside the cord, and those kinks will never come out…as a tradesman with 35 years experience before retirement, the best and most useful way to wrap a cord, aside from the heavy duty yellow commercial cords, is just to loop them in you hand… 3’-4’ lengths, and loop them..sure you have to tie them, but it’s a hell of a lot easier, than messing with a 25’ or 50’ long corkscrew from doing the elbow wrap

    Why didn't you unravel the braided cord from the other end? That way you only need to unbraided what you need, you show unraveling the entire thing even if you need 6 feet of it.

    Thanks but I'll stick with a cord roller.
    They cost $9 at Harbor Freight and the cord is rolled up perfect every time.

    if you start the braid at the NON plug end ... you can unravel a little bit and do it up again as you need

      Why would you not start at the non plug end? Who would tie the plugs in a knot?

    Wrap it just like you would a parachute cord. Easier much better. Way easier to store no knots.

    Why do all my extension cords all end up looking like curly phone cords?

    • @BobStein

      To unwind those coils, spin one end of the cord as if you're doing jump-rope. With the other end flailing free, it will turn over until those curls are gone. The Elbow Wrap method just puts those curls back in. The Over Under method prevents them.

    First and second methods twist the cord around and will cause it to coil. This will eventually lead to permanent damage. The second method is the only good way to wrap a cord because it doesn't twist it.

    never elbow wrap because it twists the wire in the cable and the braid method was done backward ,if you leave the male and female ends out last you pull only the length you need of extention cord

    "Hey, we need a guy to front this diy show. He needs a beard and a check shirt."
    "We got a guy but unfortunately he clearly has no actual clues about this stuff."
    "Does he have a beard?"
    "Yep"
    "Shirt?"
    "Yep, blue."
    "He'll do. The public are idiots anyway. Beard & shirt. That's what marketing says."

    Too bad you did not do the daisy chain method correctly. Its best attribute is that no matter how long the cord is you only have to unwrap the amount you need. This is done by connecting the ends then following the cord back to the half way point then you start the daisy chain. Now you can pull from the end with the plugs and only the length you need gets undone also you can throw the cord in a tool box or in a drawer and it cannot get tangled.

    You started at the wrong end. Start at the other end. Then you will only need to uncoil, recoil the cord need for the job

    Honestly the best way is this. ruclips.net/video/QkkodIpQ6N4/видео.html
    because you can just unwrap how much you need and re-wrap (tangle) it when your done.
