Lightning rods are not supposed to be hit by lightning. Sometimes they do but it’s not what they are for . They pull the ions out of the air to prevent lightning from happening. If you’re building does get hit the rods are not strong enough to stop damage to electrical or stop a fire

Usually I’ve seen the copper goes inside a PVC because sometimes when attached to the building, the building tends to damage anyway. And the end needs to be connected to a large copper plate sinned in minerals and conductive mixtures under the ground deep around 4-6 feet.

And to those actually searching for an explanation:
Electricity always searches for the path of lowest resistance. Everything is a conductor after a threshold is reached, that's why lighting can travel through air which is usually considered non-conductive
So when the electricity from lightning travels through the air and reaches the top of a building, it will prefer the path of lowest resistance created by the copper rods and channels and connect to ground

What you said is only truth if a positive lightning its hit, and positive ligtning strike are very rare, since the most commend lightning is negative ligtning that is the one that we do not want to hit the house, so what it actually does the positive charge that gets build into the stick gets push closer to the cloud so the negative lightning will not be able to strike it and have to found another way to balance it out by founding postitve within the cloud. Also that does not mean that negative lightning will never hit it. Positive lightning normally strike very far away from the storm so if the storm is right above your house it is guarantee not to be positive ligthning. If negative lightning does hit it, it will be the same protection as if the positive lightning hit it

  • @Dooberman69

Lightning actualy donot hit on the rod except for some really rare circumstances, it works by discharging the clouds above it through corona discharge, if there is a thunder storm at night, sometimes you can see it glowing cause of the plasma created by corona discharge infact if lightning hits the rod it would destroy it

That small diameter pole and thin strip look woefully inadequate. Seems like it could easily arc if something else is grounded nearby... You see other building have massive lightning rods.

And as everyone talking bout thieves, for us we do the extension till ground from the inside instead of outside.... Hope it helps
