There was a certain point in time where the crossover skins and cosmetic items of Fortnite used to match the themes of the seasons they were added in. This once great attention to detail has been heavily neglected, however, to the point that crossover items don't even have a passing resemblance to the theme of a season.
In today's video, I go over examples of what good, bad, and ugly Fortnite crossover seasonal synergy looks like, giving my opinion on what works, what doesn't work, and what Epic Games can do to reimplement this once great Fortnite feature.

I should make it clear that despite ragging on Khaby Lame a lot in this video, I don’t hate the man in the slightest. Hell, if I were in his shoes, I’d jump to have myself added to Fortnite, too.
I just think Epic made a huge mistake including him in the battle pass, rather than just having him be an item shop skin.
At the very least they did give him a nice design so he doesn’t stand out too much compared to the others in the battle pass
My favourite skin is stormtroopler i havent used another skin for longer than two rounds since it camed out
For all we know, it could’ve been a request from Khaby himself, so he could get the highest amount of people to notice him. You said it yourself that Fortnite is an advertising machine. I mean think about it, Khaby is in the game to get people interested in him and his content. Put him in the battle pass, and then anyone who played that season saw him front and center. Some item shop skins might be forgotten because they can be absent for a while, but people will remember Khaby just because he was in a battle pass
At the very least though, they gave Khaby an outfit that makes him look like he’s part of a heist squad, it goes with his theme of dressing up and doing skits for his content. Ch4S4 is him doing a heist skit 🤷♂️
Honestly they shoulda had the phantom thieves from persona 5 as the battle pass colab skin more specifically their leader "joker"

Khaby Lame was basically stretched to fit the heist squad;
in his NPC bio, they say that Khaby is here to simplify things and that you don’t need to go extreme lengths to pull of a heist (think of a way to get to the other side and Khaby points out that there’s a door)
still feel that Khaby’s battle pass spot should’ve been replaced by a more logical collab tho
I feel like if we didn't get khaby we would have gotten Montague from this season to take his place

I mean like, Dallas from the Payday series was RIGHT THERE (Could’ve replaced either Khaby or Ashoka)

In my opinion, the biggest fumble was in Chapter 4 season 3, when, while yes, transformers made sense for the new movie, but not doing a Jurassic Park crossover was wild. I mean, they were literally already doing a universal property. The season was literally dinosaur and jungle themes, and the season released right before Jurassic Park’s 30th anniversary! A massive fumble in my eyes.

Oh, I think Chapter 5 season 1 is doing it justice? We got Solid Snake and TMNT, both collabs that work with fighting against organized crime. Peter Griffin being there is kinda weird but it's Family Guy, this is probably a cut-away gag. If the next season is Greek Gods and myths, a percy jackson collab could work. Even bring back Kratos in the item shop?
Given how much ass Peter kicks in his show, has a cop as a best friend (he even becomes one in an episode or they go on patrol in some others), his massive, massive body count (especially massive for a main character), is buff as nails, etc....

Persona 3 Reload, FF7 Rebirth and Hades 2 would all fit the Greek myth theme. Granted FF7 draws from an eclectic mix of various European myths and religions, which fits Chapter 5's setting as a whole I suppose as the map is based on various parts of Europe.

I was genuinely so confident that they would have a Cyberpunk Edgerunners collab during the Mega season considering they just had a Cd Project Red collab the season before and Edgerunners was still relatively new and popular. And I’m still waiting for it to this day as a collab

When it comes to any single collab I genuinely don’t think anything will ever be able to match the Spider-man collab from chapter 3 season 1.
The skin itself is absolutely perfect. They didn’t add a bunch of pointless lines everywhere, they didn’t make it orange, and that is perfect. All three styles look like they were taken directly from the pages of the comics and I cannot praise them enough for how perfect they all look.
But even more importantly is the web-slinging, which is also great. (Here’s what I wrote about them back when they were still in the game)
I love how utterly unique this style of slinging is compared to basically any other game with web slinging in it. We always tend to talk about how awesome it would be to swing around in a city but nobody ever really takes about how dynamic web slinging would be in other location’s and I think it was an ingenious decision to show of the absolute max potential for slinging in other places that I really hope future spider man games try to dip more into.
Another thing that makes Fortnite’s web-slinging so good is the fact that every single shot of the webbing is entirely up to the player which to my knowledge has never been done before, this makes every single moment using them feel drastically more impactful and makes it way more interesting than without it (imo) so now if you want to follow someone going in a car, while in any other game you would simply follow the car around the city, in Fortnite there a suddenly an infinite amount of different ways you could go after them, you could simply follow the car until it stops or you could go ahead and try to shoot one of the tires or you could connect yourself to the car, or even try to land on-top of the car, and that’s not even factoring in the dynamic environments that constantly shake up how you can get from point A to point B. due to all of this being in the player’s own hand (it at least for me) can lead to moments that genuinely feel better then some parts of ps4 spider man in terms of satisfaction.

my fav collab by far is deadpool during chapter 2 season 2. i love how they didnt just make him a skin, but he was involved with the story going on throughout the season. he was hiding out in the agency where you could visit him, use his computer and interact with the space he was in. then later he kicked meowscles out of his yacht which impacted the story as meowscles was now shadow and living at a box factory which would later be catty corner. he even hijacked the battle bus! you could argue his skin didnt match the espionage theme, but i think they encorporated him extremely well.
Plus it was Deadpool, he just broke the fourth wall and added himself to the game.
Meanwhile Peter Griffin seems completely detached from the plot. Wasn't even on Jones' list of potential society members holding Peely hostage (and the bounty boards).
That’s the thing. At least the Attack On Titan collab makes sense. European map still in game and the theme of Japan. AOT worked with Mega. And the worst part about the Last Resort season is that Payday 3 came out the same time as this season.
Plus AOT Season 4's ending part 1 came out. So it was great to promote the show
Yea wouldn't be suprised to see FF7 in Chapter 5 regardless of season considering all the various European stuff it draws from, though if any time was good it'd be Season 2, with FF7 Rebirth coming out today.
I think an important thing to remember is that the item shop is NOT the battle pass
The whole point of the item shop is to have rotating items that aren't tied to a battle pass or season
So saying any item shop only skins should have "seasonal synergy" doesn't make a lot of sense

Personally, having a colab skin is always good because most battlepass skins are not it. But that’s my opinion
sure, but it takes away from actually getting good late tier skins from battle passes, right now we have collab skins being the main selling point of the battle pass, but back in ch1 and some seasons of ch2 it was an actual original skin and not a collab skin, that was the selling point, a badass skin, now it's just meh skins with one crossover skin

Im a newer player and skins like darth vader nader and rick sanchez beeing battlepass skins is such a shame. It sucks that newer players just cannot get these beloved characters in any way.

Which is why collabs shouldn't be in the limited system. But it makes the game stay alive so nothing the players can do
I think that to me indiana Jones and darth Vader make a bit of sense to me. Being that the theme of vibin is summer fun and relaxation. A big part a summer fun and relaxation is going to the movies. To see those movie blockbusters. And i feel like darth vader and indiana Jones represent that part of summer fun. The summer movie blockbuster that come during the summer. And also that both Star wars and Indiana jones movies have been summer blockbuster in history. So I feel like there inclusion makes sense in a way
I know why fortnite collabs don't synergise with the season's theme anymore. It's because they never did. I mean we got Wreck-It-Ralph collabd during a Halloween season (c1 s6) NFL collab during a winter themed season (c1 s7), Avengers collab during a pirate's themed season (c1 s8), John Wick, Stranger Things and Air Jordan collabs during a sci-fi season (c1 s9), Travis Scott during a spy themed season (c2 s2) and so on. Hell even the seaon you claim is "the good" isn't actually good, because c2 s5 was about hunters (I have no idea where you got warriors and survivours from. Every promotional piece of chapter 2 season 5 only mentioned hunters.), and the only 2 skins that fit that description are Mando and Predator, and eveyone else there doesn't make as much sense. The only collaborations that used to make sense with the theme were the battle pass collabs, and their case I agree, it would be nice if they synergised again. But outside of battle pass collabs never cared about the theme of the season and they will never care in the future. I mean, making every collab synergise with the season's theme is just too much work for no gain. It wouldn't make much diffrence if epic held the Jujutsu Kaisen license untill the season that fits it happened, or just released it now. Besides holding onto the license untill the season's theme fits it, could be pretty risky. What if by that time the hype around the license dies out? What if the owner of the license will get into controversy? What if the owner of the license changes their mind on collabs? What if the license will get into legal troubles? If epic releases collabs right after they're done, even if it doesn't fit the season, a lot of those problems could be solved by making the collab off sale and never releasing it again. It would be unfortunate, but epic would've already managed to get at least some money. But if epic holds onto the license untill the time is just right, and one of those problems happens, epic will have to delay the collab indefinitely or completely cancel it. So, in my opinion, it's probably better if epic doesn't wait untill collabs fit the theme. In that case a lot less cool stuff would be canceled.

The warriors and survivalists thing actually came from an internal doc that leaked suring the epic vs apple trial. They only ever advertised it as hunters publicly but they meant to cast a wide net

the decrease in synergy with collabs probably comes with priorities changing and also a big part of the community have complained about the collab heavy battle passes/seasons, it sucks but the more they focus on everything, the less they can focus on the collabs
my favorite is crossover was 100% the Futurama one
I remember while working 2 jobs in quarantine. I spent over 500 dollars during chapter 2 season 5-8 due to all the collabs. I loved each and every one of them and i still use them to this day. Granted i can actually play more because im only part time. But besides jujitsu kaisen, ninja turtles, eminem & invincible i havent spent money really since chapter 2. Battlepasses have been bought but i really regret not buying the one with indiana jones. But its okay, i have plenty. The collabs then were exciting and new. The story made it make sense, now it feels like a big ad. Sure it was all along. Although now its just throw in this here and this there. No rhyme or reason. I do wish we had the opportunity to use collab items such as deadpools dualies, stark rifle, all the marvel powers, mandalorians sniper, jujitsu kaisens mythics, spiderman gloves, and the countless pois they only added for a short while

I was thinking the same thing about Ashoka with the heist season. At least these past years I've been playing the Fortnitemares collabs made sense with spooky Halloween times, like Ash in Chapter 3, and then with Jack, Alan Wake and Mikey Myers for Chapter 4.
It's not much, but sometimes you gotta just pick your battles.
Personally, my favourite collab is the Street Fighter skins. Being able to play as my Street Fighter mains, Ryu, Chun-Li and Sakura, using a gun is just funny to me 😂
I agree with this so much. A strong battle pass theme can really make a season so much better. That's one of the reasons I love Ch2 S5 so much: all the collabs, even the ones in the item shop, fit the theme. These random collabs in battle passes can ruin their themes as it's basically whatever random media is coming out around the same time, with no thought put into it. I was never a fan of collabs in battle passes to begin with and believe all collabs should just be in the item shop, but if you're going to shove them in the battle pass, then at least make them make sense!

i was so fucking pissed during Chapter 4 Season 4 because Payday 3 was releasing around the start of that season which coincidentally had good stealth, taking out cameras and guards, placably turrets that act JUST like the ones in PAYDAY 2 and robbing vaults. so i went assuming "HOLY SHIT WERE ABSOLUTELY GETTING THE PAYDAY GANG IN FORTNITE! THE TIMING AND SCENARIO CAN'T BE A COINCIDENCE!".... only for them to never come to the fucking game and my heart being sank low.... i wanted to play as Dallas and Chains so bad, like they have done collabs with MUCH more vulgar franchises so it was safe to assume they could achieve it and advertise Payday 3 as an addition to them using Unreal 4 for that game just like Borderlands 3.... but.... nope. absolutely missed opportunity that pisses me off to this day
yeah honestly I feel like fortnite is just getting lazy with themes and effort towards seasons in general..
I think some of it is because in Ch2 S5 Epic wanted specific collab skins and were looking for them while in most other seasons companies wanted their characters in the game and they reached out the to epic
MGS and TMNT sort of it Chapter 5 Season 1 but Family Guy and DBZ (Frieza and Cell) had no reason to be there (Frieza _was_ added during Winterfest but Cell was too).

I don't think epic games can simply just snap their fingers and make a collab happen, it's way more complicated than that and some developers may not agree with epic's terms and conditions. It may be easy to sit here and judge them for not doing Y collab on X time, but sometimes it's prolly not even their fault
Skin wise, my favorite collab is the Season 19 Spider-Man collab by far. Gameplay wise, it's between that collab and Season 25's Star Wars collab
The only crossover I feel like they put serious effort into was the Spider-Man one because they actually had a new drop in the Daily Bugle. How come we couldn’t get something like that with Star Wars or maybe a leaf village drop for naruto? Maybe a hero school with the my hero collab, heck this season why not have the iconic family guy house somewhere on the map? Clearly Peter griffin is the big draw of the battle pass.

I only really care about fortnite cus i find its existence really funny. but i do agree that part of me wishes there was more synergies between season theme and collabs. In general i prefer it when collabs try to mix the two franchises together as opposed to just slapping on some familiar iconography and calling it a day. Battlebus is one of my favorite skins in a long time for this reason, i think they're neat.
I really hope we get some actual time travel themed collabs next season. My personal most wanteds thats actually feasibly possible is either Frisk from Undertale (cus of the whole saving and loading thing) or Silver the Hedgehog. Although if we're going with a collab thatll never happen in a million years. I would love to see Time from the indie visual novel her tears were my light, who is a literal physical embodiment of the concept of time, and thus, can time travel. But thats a really obscure game that i earnestly dont expect anyone reading this comment to have even heard of, let alone played.
I also think the seasons nature as a "retro" season could make retro characters work well. Pretty much any character originating from the NES, Genesis, PS1 or OG Xbox. Maybe even some old DOS characters.

The MHA CH4S4 Collab actually makes sense to me at least.
It’s a season themed around Heists, and bad guys breaking into buildings to rob them, so…superheroes usually stop those kinds of people, it’s more a contrast then relating to the season theme but still.
I was also hoping that they added the Payday gang. Id think itd be so cool and in payday 3, they could've added the wildcards mask with customizbility like instead of a diamond, you could put on a heart are spade. I though theyd fit so well with one anothwr but it just never happened 😢
In regard to Michael Myers and Alan Wake, they were specifically added for Halloween so i feel like they get a pass.

The Witcher’s oath is as simple as “slay monsters get money”, but Geralt says there not an official oath for them but common people respect codes enough it becomes an excuse to get to the point and remain neutral. There are the basics principles Witchers follow such as respecting authority, fighting with honor, and protect the innocent.
I still find most collabs bad, especially secret skins. Deadpool being revealed early fit deadpool himself but after that most secret skins weren't secret, and usually collabs. Remember when every week after beating challenges you got a loading screen with co-ordinates to a free level up and when you got a certain amount you got the secret skin?

Deadpool is my favorite collab. When chapter 2 season 2 came out i knew jack shit about him but now that i know alot about him im lucky that i got deadpool

i think goku fits in better then most collab skins for that season anime can be a relaxing hobby and goku over all is a pretty chill and friendly character
Well one thing i've noticed is that even the normal battlepass skins dont always fit in its own season. I think the last time they did a great job making them all fit was the neon tokyo season. I do hope that if they are going for a greek mythology season next time that we get young kratos.

I think the whole point of Darth Vader in the Vibin’ season was for strong juxtaposition. Indy fit the adventure aspect and rolling boulder gameplay feature.
They should add super man dead pool and Luffy from one piece live action in mortal kombat

I'm so sad so many amazing skins are gone and never will come back. Indiana jones is the one I'll never get over... maybe one day we'll be able to get deadpool again.

At the end of the day, the skins make money. Plus, each community is just happy to get their favorite characters in their favorite game.
The MHA fans have 7 skins (correct me if I’m wrong) of very popular characters who they love, they don’t care if the skins came out in a futuristic season.
The Star Wars fans have, a lot… ranging from a ton of different seasons, but they don’t care if they released in a season about vacation and fun, they just want to play as fuckin darth Vader.
They really don’t care if the season is about heists or jungles, they are happy and enjoy the collabs, and that’s really what matters.
I started mainly getting into fortnite because of carnage in ch2 sn8 since I’m a huge marvel fan. Idc if the season is about cubes or the destruction of the island, I enjoyed the season because I got to play as a character I like a lot.

Real shit when it comes to fortnite and thier collabs ita pretty much one giant marketing scheme and as they established themselves that theyre within the center of the ominverse so any character from any franchise/IP can be apart of fortnites story but that aside as for me I pick and choose what I want to buy and play as for im very selective and organize when it comes to skins for I like playing as soldiers, warriors, mercenaries, assassins, basically boots on the ground/regular human type so if see any skin that i feel I'll like alot and have the vbucks for it then ima cop it
My fav collabs so far based on how much I use them would definitely be MHA, RE and Dragonball, some of my top favorite skins are Deku from My Hero, Leon Kennedy from Resident Evil, Piccolo from Dragonball and Guile from Street Fighter

Honestly one one of the few collab skins i dislike purely for the season it was added in is darth vader from ch3 season 3 vibin because you know a guy stuck in a suit that was canonically specifically designed to put him in a constant state of agony in order to fuel his rage just screams

For the ant man inclusion I believe and I can be wrong is due to the fact that he is connected to the Quantum Verse maybe by chance as yet it’s a new concept in the MCU it actually was first introduced in Captain America Comics #26 (March, 1943) and yet it was all around Captain America it was later introduced that Antman can access that verse in Fantastic Four Friday #16 in where the Fantastic Four are saved by Antman but there’s a chance that it may have been introduced way earlier with Antman being able to access it but that was for me just digging deep to possible connections of other verses and marvel and Antman so yeee and it was also called the Microverse back and maybe it was then changed to the quantum realm but eh that deserves more looking into them I already just did
I disagree that Chapter 4 Season 4 had no theme matching colabs because it was a Halloween season and they added some assorted perfectly themed Halloween skins

I thought Sly Cooper would've been great for Chapter 4 Season 4, Sly's personality and what you do in his games fitted perfectly with the Season.

Bruh I miss when the battle pass actually had a theme. I know I may be in the minority here, but I enjoy skins that have the same base model as the chapter 1 defaults vastly more than the newer ones. I just love basic skins like sparkle specialist
