Me and my wife couldn’t ever get ahead so I finally sat down with her and we added up all our bills and created a budget. We found we were spending on average 1200 a month on stuff now we’re putting a 1000 into savings and attacking our stupid bills and selling things we don’t need and now we are a year away from being debt free!

Wesley Groth - same here, I was spending a literal fortune eating out every month, usu fast food & easy take-out - not anything trendy or spendy. But doing it A LOT. Lunch out every week day & dinner out 4-5 nites a week. Eating from home has been a game-changer, budget-wise.

It took me a while to teach my wife how expensive it is to eat out. I asked her if she wanted to go out to a nice restaurant. If she did, we had to cut back on eating fast food. Skip 2 McDonalds meals and you can get Applebee's instead. Skip 4 McDonald's meals and you can go to a pretty dang nice restaurant for the same money.
And it's YOUR food vs someone else's. Take pride in that.

Actually; in Alberta, Canada, we had a Premier who told us to look in a mirror, instead of admitting that his party, which had been in power for 45 years at the time, had royally robbed Albertans and had given that money away.
My response and campaign against him ended with a threat that every Albertan needed to buy a hand mirror and beat him with it.

What’s amusing is even after becoming debt-free for almost two years now, some family and lots of friends still think I’m dumb for not having a credit card because I’m not ‘reaping’ the benefits. I don’t have a negative net worth; they do however.

I've never had a budget. Once I started making money, I just kept living like a poor student and saving the surplus, which I worked out was about 60% of my income.
That's what I do--spend as little as possible, all of the time. I don't have cable, an i-phone, car payments or credit cards, don't eat out, shop at thrift stores and buy clothes only when the ones I have are falling apart, so it works.
It is still a spending plan. You are being intentional about your money, which is the entire point of the budget.

Same here, I was happy with 23 and no money. Now I spend some money in a few things some times, but 340 days each year I live like a student and enjoy free things.
I AM Dave Ramseyish, I am debt free, pay myself first, pay my bills, and live below my means. Whatever is left over I divide by 32 days in a month, that’s how much my wife and I can spend a day. If we spend less (which we usually do)!we have more the next day. By the end of the month we usually have a good chunk to put aside. Dave is a great inspiration and keeps me motivated.
Ha! I thought I was the only person who did that. I might give myself $500-$700 of money in my budget for gas, food, entertainment, and pretty much anything I swipe my card for during the month. Divide the remaining amount by the number of days, pay it all off at the end of the month, and repeat the next month.
If you have money leftover you do not necessarily have to divide it in two days you can just invest the whole thing
These concepts are also in the book ; The Richest Man in Babylon . Dave Ramsey is on point . His program is Biblically sound and it works 🙏🙂

I worked in the gulf-oil field for years-[good money] I have seen guys make the big money for years and blow it - and about 1 in 10 will manage and save their money and set themselves up in life!
You tell your money what to do, or you wonder where it went. One month into my debt free journey and this sums it up so well! Very powerful statement. You have to be proactive and plan.

what unnecessary bills? mortgage? water? sewer? electricity? insurance? cable? car payments? ok, there's a short list....check off which ones we can do without. oh yes, lets not forget Credit Cards. Is that on the list? Depends on what you used it for. food before the paycheck comes in? I've done that. Then pay it off? yup....life happens. A new sofa on sale? Nope. Never. That is NOT an emergency. Sit on a folding chair from Wallmart until you save up for a sofa. It won't kill you. Dave would not approve of me. That's ok, I don't need his approval and neither does my family. They live wit ME, not Dave.

Lot of things are actually not necessary- go van dwelling, go off-grid etc. - no need for electrity, sewer, or water. Definatley no cable/internet- go to library or Wi-Fi. Dont even need to buy food- grow food, go to soup kitchens. Lots of soups kitchens also give clothes...etc etc. Its all optional.

I used to review my checking account once a month after all bills were paid and put everything over about $500 towards prepaying the mortgage. That $500 was a cushion that worked for me to avoid accidentally overdrafting if a math mistake was made. Kept emergency fund in a separate account. Shaved 16 years off a 30 year note.

I paid off my credit card debt, cut up both my credit cards today, I have a $1000.00 for an emergency fund. What's next!
Contribute to your employer's 401k up to their match. If they match up to 4%, then you only contribute up to 4% yourself annually
Open up a Roth IRA with the following:
Small cap growth mutual fund with a 10 yr track record of earning at least 12%
Mid cap growth mutual fund with a 10 yr track record of earning at least 12%
Large cap growth mutual fund with a 10 yr track record of earning at least 12%
International or emerging markets mutual fund with a 10 yr track record of earning at least 12%.
If you are contributing 4% to your 401k, contribute 11% to your Roth IRA and divide the 11% evenly between these 4 mutual funds you picked.
Live below your means and invest not rocket science.

What Dave describes is like going to AA meetings. You have to keep the budget, keep the dollar apt and you will be successful. Same with a diet. It's not something you do then get off, it's a life time change to be successful. Intentional.
I owed a 20k car loan, and my car was worth 16k if i sold it. Which meant i still had to pay out of my pocket 4k, i did it. Why? My payments were 550 a month. And i was tired of paying for 3 yrs, and still had another 3 yrs left. Guess what? I saved up 7k really fast with those 550 extra a month, bought a car cash. And now iam back where i started. With s car i OWN, and still making 550 extra a month. I basically gave myself a 550 a month promotion lol be smart with your money guys, and having a car loan is a hole you do not want to be stuck in...well, any loan actually

It's a good speech but most people will not live on a written budget because it's not convenient. Our culture worships comfort and convenience.
John Dyer But the inconvenience is so small compared to the rewards of accomplishment and peace it brings. It really sets you on the path to being more happy and content. I've only been on a written budget for about a month now and wow! What a difference. I feel like I got a huge raise and my bank account is in great shape despite the fact that I'm aggressively paying off debt. It's like you can really see the cash flowing in a very smooth and controlled manner and I'm not as worried about money actually

What are you talking about? Download EveryDollar app, every single month, put the budget for that month. I use the TD spend app to categorize what money I sent go where, like if I spent 60$ at Walmart it go to Groceries, same as utilities and anything else. Every week, open the app, and make sure u spent as budget u want. I am 19, married, go to school and work and I can still do it. Pls no excuse if you want to take control of your money as well as your life.

Some people don't uses that or write it down because it's too depressing to see more month than money. They are stretched to their limit. It's easy for people to look at others, tell them how to live.

It all boils down to common sense, something many today do not have. Put simply, if you spend more than you have (or make), you will eventually be broke - no matter how much you make, or how much you start with. Put the credit card and checkbook away and start paying for day-to-day things with CASH. That way, you'll actually "see" the money you're spending. When you use a credit card or a check, a $20 purchase and a $500 purchase look exactly the same. When you use cash, you can't help but notice the difference between one twenty-dollar bill, and twenty-five of them!

You do have a point BUT I've never had a written budget and me and my boyfriend have always been debt free. We have no credit cards, no student loans (and we have both graduated from universities, I'm a doctor and my bf is an engineer) no cars (we use bikes and public transportation), I eat plant-based most of the time (like 5-6 days per week), we rarely spend money on restaurants and such, we save about 50-60% of our income and it has always been like that. Now we have a mortgage that takes up about 20% of our income and we were able to pay a hefty downpayment for our apartment. Our secret? Oh well we live in Europe :D :D

Wow what a great quote at the end there. "You don't get a pass if you're smart. If you're smart you gotta do it twice as much." Being smart is not an excuse to be mediocre, it's the exact opposite.

I definitely check my budget and work on my finance numbers more frequently than I make purchases.
I'm nervous to spend every single dollar with an emergency fund still. I like to have a few hundred bucks to fall back on for things I don't expect like an expensive oil change, broken glasses that I need to replace, or to help someone out. These are not exactly emergencies but they are expensive needs or obligations.
Im from Venus you can allocate money to savings you don't have to spend it all by anymeans if you have excess pay off debt or save 😊
Ya, I keep an emergency fund in savings plus some buffer money in my checking since the timing of auto-pay bills is not always convenient in comparison to paychecks.
You can always save more in another account for those specific things! I’ve saved my 1,000 but I opened a couple other accounts to save for upcoming things like my insurance (I pay every 6 months) trips, summer wardrobe, birthdays, possible car expenses, etc.
I have Sinking funds for these types of things.
Dave says you should start with a small cushion in your checking account. Mine is 100 (i.e., $100 in my account = don't touch that). After that, the funds I have coming in need to equal zero. For lesser emergencies, yes, a sinking fund is good to have.
Your financial situation is largely based on decision making and not circumstance. The wealthy understand this and the poor don’t.

I have personally spoken to people who have a less than 200.00 house payment who struggle to pay it. I go over their Financials and food is eating them alive.
