Agree with your comments 👍 I bought one of these at the start of 2021 & it gave me a great introduction to wood turning at a very reasonable price. From it I learned what more I needed if I was going to get more fun from the hobby & so I eventually got a more robust lathe. I sold the Parkside for almost what I paid for it - but it was a good start to a great hobby
Thank you. It was really easy to make. A simple but enjoyable project. This lathe is currently available in Lidl (I think this week only) at £60. Real bargain!
I would make a tool rest from a 6 inch piece of 1 inch round bar stock . To properly install a spur drive first use an awl and locate your center point , then use a mallet to drive the spurs into the end of the spindle . And make a center hole for the tail center . Spur drives are the traditional method for spindle turnings When using the face plate make allowances for the thickness of the mounting screws and part off the piece . Another option is to gluea waste block to the base of your stock and either cut it off with your pull saw , or turn it off . And for your safety BUY A PROPER FACESHIELD . parts flying off is a usual indication that they are not securely mounted between centers , or that a piece the is at either end has split . Tail stock tension has no bearing on the bearings, ,they support the motor shift. This style of variable speeds to be adjusted while the motor is running , and can damage the mechanism if done with motor switch off . Smoke from the drive head can be an indication that there has been a fault in the drive belt adjustment for speed, if the speed control knob is moved with motor switched off , it could also be and indication that the motor is overloaded and there might be a fault in the motor wiring . If you continue to use the lathe . I would find a ten to 15 cm bolt that fits your extra spur drive and use it to set in the points of the spur drive . You will need a bolt with left threads
Thanks for the video, I got one of these a few months ago , just done a couple.of handles for candle holders in lanterns,I do need to get better lathe gouges though. I love the light that you made.
I've recently got into woodworking and my dad got me one like these so i can make mugs and cups in a better way. This video is great cause i have just the same opinion as you do. Its surely not the best but far from being bad. I just have a couple tools(including the ones that come with it) but its really all about learning how to make the best out of them, but i would recommend changing things where the tools lay when you're working because it really feels like its gonna break sometimes.
Excellent review, just what I was looking for before the Lidl trip tomorrow! They’ve just come back in stock!😊 £90 though which is annoying as they were £60 last year😆
@@creationtools9541 I went for the band saw instead! 50% increase after 9 months on the lathe is a bit cheeky! Thought I’d wait and see if they come down..but I doubt it. All the best
@creationtools how would you suggest covering/masking/removing the screw holes you are left with by using the steel plate? My wife has bought me this lathe for my birthday i believe, im excited to start using it ! You video has been the most helpful, that ive seen, to show the capability of the machine! Also you mentioned your new tools for the bowl on a stand ... do you mind sharing which tools those are?
Ideally you'd plan ahead (unlike me) and design the piece with this in mind right from the start. So you would make the base of your work piece (where you're attaching the plate to) extra thick. After completing the lathe worth, remove the piece and saw off the extra material. Does that make sense? The tools I'm using are from a company called Crown Tools in Sheffield. If you send me your email address, I'll forward you a link. Happy birthday by the way!
Please don't buy this lathe it is flimsy junk. It is a dead end to woodturning can't get a chuck for a m18 spindle under powered waste of money. Buy a 2nd hand cast iron mini or midi lathe then you will have an abundance of cheap 2nd hand standard attachments to give you a taste of all aspects of turning before having to buy another lathe. Try and find a local woodtuner or club before buying they will steer you in the right direction. I have been woodturning for about 20 years now and I have helped and taught a lot of people woodturning and saved them a lot of money buy showing what not to do and why.
Bought one a couple of days ago in a Lidls warehouse sale, a steal @ £34, works a treat once properly bolted to a solid bench.
Good video and explanation of what you can do with this tool. Good to not hear the same old tool snobbery you find on many forums
I love the pepper mill coaster , you can drill out the screw holes and either fill them with dowels or wood filler

Thanks very much for this concise and comprehensive vid. I don't need an industrial machine, so will be hitting Lidl tomorrow. Cheers.

Excellent video, very well made and very useful. Thanks
Very helpful assessment .Thankyou.
Thanks..a really good explainer vid. I've just bought one - great for the money.

Isn't the face plate intended for turning bowls, and similar items?
Just got one. It's an awesome thing
Thank you for the good video!

Yes, I noticed the price had gone up but honestly, even for £90 it's still a bargain.

@@tomhart5465 the bandsaw is also very good. I've been using the parkside bandsaw for the past 2 year. Fantastic value !
Thank you! They are coming into store for €90 in a few weeks I’m definitely going to get it 🙏
They're definitely worth buying.
Best of luck!
Have you tried to add a chuck? I’ve made a few bowls now but feel a chuck mount would be easier to have a clean base finish.
I haven't as yet. Though I've heard that people have done so quite successfully.

15:30 Why did you split the handle the whole way through? Is that a full tang blade?
