Even 6 years later this is a great and (imo) up to date tutorial, Amazing work! That can´t be said about a lot 6 year old videos... I think only the DSR from Nvidia got easier to apply.
Everything I was looking for in one single video. Love it. I took a bunch of screenshots and was disappointed when they looked compressed as all hell. Not anymore...
I'm glad you found it helpful. I have a few more of these planned... I just have to finish the research and script-writing. Let me know if you have any questions though and I'll try to help.
Im on a 1080 Sony TV so thanks for the DSR info. Tiff also keeps the bitrate which is basically grey scale steps. 8bit is 256 steps while 16bit is over 16000.
Years and years of highschool and they in all the years I took computers classes they never ever explained png, gif, most just told us to save it as whatever LOL anyways, my point What a clear, great video, thank you so much! and I will be sharing with others man Gonna stop by your twitch with some pocket money too
I'm glad to hear this was helpful! It's not something the average uses really needs to know though. And, depending on how graphics are used in your computer classes, it might not matter. But, it's good to know. And I appreciate the Twitch gesture... except that I don't stream on Twitch.. or anywhere. It seems way too difficult to me. I prefer to hide behind my screenshots and videos.
So I've been googling for 5 minutes on how to take a high quality screenshot for star citizen but I was using generic search terms. Happened upon your video and heard "Star Citizen". Full circle 😆
My video was meant to be generic so that it could be applied to ALL in-game screenshotting. But most of my shots do come from Star Citizen. Let me know if you had any specific questions and I'll try to help.
You can either crop your image AFTER you take it OR, you can switch the game to windowed mode and use custom resolutions that are in vertical aspect ratios.
What do you set your rights to on Flickr? Do you know if Steam's "uncompressed" png options are worthwhile? Even running SC as a Non-Steam-game allows for its use, though it throws the PNG into one, unorganized folder for all games. May have to look at Nvidia's overlay for screenshot options...
I set the rights on my images on Flickr to "Attribution, non-commercial". But in the end, that doesn't mean much as I'm taking screenshots of assets owned by CIG. Videogame screenshots are an odd thing as far as rights go. My setting was simply to encourage people to give me credit when they use my images, that's all. As far as Steam, I have no idea. I've never taken a screenshot with Steam before.
Sorry for a delayed response... hopefully you've figured it out by now. If not, SC is NOT on Vulcan yet so you need to choose the "Direct3D 9 - 10 / 11 / 12" option
GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is probably the king of the completely FREE Photoshop alternatives: www.gimp.org/ I have GIMP because I want to learn it and be able to answer questions like this... but I'm still learning my way around. I'm a professional graphic design and have always had a copy of Photoshop installed. But GIMP seems to be a very powerful tool. As for GIMP's use specifically with high resolution screenshots: it seems to be perfectly capable. I just opened an 8k Star Citizen screenshot in GIMP, downsampled it to 4k (using IMAGE > SCALE IMAGE), and the exported it as a lossless PNG. Everything worked perfectly. So I'd definitely suggest you check out GIMP.
Mr. Hasgaha I appreciate you taking the time to reply and give some advice. My PC is very capable at producing high quality captures, I just have to learn all the ins and outs of settings and controls. I've taken a few SC captures, but look forward to getting better at it. Keep up the great work, I look forward to learning more from you!
Great video. With software like SRWE or WBG, are there ways you can use a higher custom resolution and fit it all onto a lower resolution monitor so you can still play the game and see what your're trying to capture? Thanks
It depends on the game. Some games have built-in screenshot tools while others don't. The buttons to capture screenshots also changes between games and software. I know that Star Citizen's built-in screenshot function is PRINT SCREEN by default... but I don't use that because it captures in a compressed JPG format. I use ReShade to capture in all my games now.
Are you constantly running the game at ridiculous resolutions or is there a way (in Star Citizen specifically, if it matters) to instruct your computer to only use a very high resolution momentarily when you press the screenshot button? While I don't mind the game freezing or stuttering when I take a screenshot, having it stutter all the time would make it hard to get to the right place in-game and take the perfect screenshot. I want to avoid having to manually open graphics settings in-game and DSR settings on my card back-and-forth as I game and take screenshots occasionally.
I play the game at 2560x1440 to 3840x2160 on my 4k 16:9 monitor. When taking screenshots, I play in those normal resolutions, set up my shot, and then increase the resolution only when everything is ready. At 8k, I'm getting about 2-3 fps. When I take super high resolution shots, I'm either using VSR/DSR (video card feature) to upscale the game image while making it fit on my 4k monitor OR I'm in windowed mode in a custom resolution that extends beyond the physical bounds of my 4k monitor. Either way, I then downsample to 4k before sharing the image. To my knowledge, there is not a way to automate that resolution-switching-process. Even if I did, switching from 2560x1440 to 8000x4500 with ReShade usually takes my PC 10-20 seconds to stabilize before I can take the shot.
@@Hasgaha sadly, not the answer I was hoping for. But very admirable that you go through that process to take some pretty snaps. I think I appreciate your work even more now.
I just started playing the metal gear series and some of the scenes in MGS3 and MGSV really make me want to take a screenshot, but I don't think there's settings to turn off the HUD and things like that
I've only played the very first Metal Gear (1988 on the NES). I remember thoroughly enjoying that game even though it's considered an illegitimate port of the original. I have zero experience with any of the games in the MGS series. All that aside, many games lack a way of hiding the HUD elements... especially slightly older games. It's only been in recent years that the game devs (and publishers) have recognized the passion of screenshotters and the usefulness of including screenshot tools (for free marketing). If you're willing to dig and accepting of potential risks, you could search the internet for mods and camera hacks. Usually, others have thought the same thing, "this game would be great to shoot, I wish there was a HUDless option or camera controls".... and then figured out how to make it happen.
@@Hasgaha I found a setting that turns off the HUD in MGSV, but I wish there was a dedicated camera mode. MGS2 had a dedicated camera item that actually took the highest quality photos possible in the game, and I unlocked a camera in MGS3 after beating it for the first time, but there doesn't seem to be one in MGSV which is probably the most graphically advanced game in the entire series.
What kind of high end machine did you have when you could use the DSR from Full HD to the upscaled resolutions?! Try it today from 2k to 4k with Horizon Forbidden West and my Frame Rate died :D
Hi, can I ask you something? I have a problem on ps4... I switched to png format and when I send the Screenshots to my Chat and save them they're emulating back to jpeg format... 😓
I might be spending less time in Space Engine once Star Citizen Alpha 3.0 comes out... we'll see. But yeah, that's an interesting question... I feel like we've been on SE 0.9.8 for a really long time now. I'm going to guess SC 3.0 will go to the PTU first.
