    Regrets and Grateful (3 each)
    Regrets...
    1. Family Separation (that could be three all by itself). My usual sea/shore rotation was brutal. I earned nine sea service ribbons, and deployed even more (you only get one ribbon per year). Out of 20 years, I did 13+ on sea duty. All of it at least 70% underway. One time I was gone so long my son broke his ankle - and it had healed before I got home.
    2. Moving every few years. As exciting as it was, having to yank kids out of schools and family away from friends is hard.
    3. I can't think of a third regret. Wish I got promoted more, or faster, but who wouldn't?
    Grateful for...
    1. Seeing 5 continents and dozens of countries. Getting to live in every time zone the US has.
    2. The gratitude of patriotic citizens...not all of whom were American, believe it or not. I had Aussies thank me for winning WWII!
    3. Benefits... even the ones I didn't necessarily avail myself of! I said above I'd wished I'd gotten promoted more. But my retirement check still shows up every month. Nice!

I served at Pearl Harbor/CincPacFleet/Makalapa Gate. My family lived at Moana Loa Terrace. All before you were born (1990-93). I loved it. The three years went by like three months. Spent most of it outside... running, swimming, rowing, windsurfing, and lifting weights... Got into great shape. The food, the locals, the local music, culture and the scenery were all great. My fav beach was Kailua (windward), but I loved the North Shore too. Concha shells!
Good luck in the reserves and civilian life, shipmate.

My only experience with Hawaii was our stops at Pearl Harbor going and returning from our 1984 West-Pac on the USS Long Beach CGN-9 in support of the USS Kitty Hawk CV-63 battle group. A very clean and beautiful place with the occasional rainbows but very $$$. Also invest as much as you can in the TSP (at least 10%) and to put most if not all in the C & S funds. The TSP wasn't available in my navy days but had it since working for U.S. civil service since 1989. My TSP has gone up over 130% since retiring in 2016 so this is all based solely on C & S fund increases in my TSP account.

I worked and taught at Midway Ceremonial Hall for 20 years and did voiceovers for recruit training, as was as well the announcer for grads on Friday . . . over 1200 live "shows" I called them.
