  • Castlevania had an arcade port one year after its release called "Vs. Castlevania." It also had an arcade sequel/spinoff called "Haunted Castle" one year later. Lets look at all three and compare.

    The Pizza Hut near my house growing up had a table top arcade version of Castlevania. You could eat your pizza on the glass top with a TV mounted underneath and controls right in front of you. Growing up in the late 80s was so different than now!

      The Pizza Hut near my house had a table top arcade also, but it was Altered Beast. It also had a PlayChoice bar top near the exit!

    I had the honor of playing the VS. system version on its actual arcade cabinet back in 2013 at the Barcade in Jersey City. It was only for a few minutes though as I had a pizza cooking next door that I was waiting for to take back to my father's apartment. The next time I went in there a few years later they didn't have it anymore. At least I got the Arcade Archives edition now and I got an arcade controller for my Switch too.

    Worth noting: In Vs Castlevania, once you get to the prison, the clock time and difficulty of the NES version are identical from there on out. Only the levels before it have decreased time.

    For those who want to play it, it has been digitally released as part of the “arcade archives” series. (Both VS Castlevania and Haunted Castle)

    • @PikangsFutaba
      @PikangsFutaba Год назад +1

      Also Haunted Castle in the Arcade Archives re-release has the option to disable the limited amount of continues, making it a little bit easier overall, as you can put your health to the max allowed at the expense of losing continues... WITHOUT losing said function in case you get a game over (that limited continues disabled option CANNOT be changed in the Konami Arcade Collection... because it doesn't appear at all... which to be honest is good as otherwise people would stop playing the game whenver they die and see they had to restart the game from square one with the limited continues rule... something that BOTH Contra and Super Contra in both Contra Anniversary collection and the Arcade Archives version (as far as I know) don't allow, you still have limited continues on those 2 Contra games like the good old days of the Arcades).

      That's actually common for Konami games. Contra Arcade looks washed out compared to the vibrant color pallete of the NES games, which is important in these games.

    • @cherokeefit4248
      @cherokeefit4248 2 года назад

      There is no actual arcade castlevania ever than this port. You had the actual nes version on the play choice ten or you had the vs stand alone game. I’m one of the rare people that never played the nes game. I played the arcade game first and was wowed that an arcade game of castlevania exactly existed. The game I played wasn’t a play choice ten or red tent, it was in a dedicated stand alone cab. Wish I had one so bad .

    If you think about what type of game Castlevavia is, then richer colors do it no favors. This is one of those rare cases where the NES version is better than the arcade. But then, the NES vesrsion did come first.

    • @PikangsFutaba

    On VS. Castlevania, you basically get three hits from all the enemies until you're dead! I played it last night at a bar and got to Stage 12 before they shut the game off due to 'last call'. lol.

      I actually played Haunted Castle on Konami Arcade collection on the Switch and my God, it's so @#$%king hard. The fact you get only one life makes the game tedious to play and those damn annoying stupid bats that are way too small and hard to hit, really pisses me off. I like the game because of the sound track and it plays like a true Castlevania game but I wouldn't say I love it.

    I must ask. When it comes to Haunted Castle, which version of it are you playing? There's actually two versions, Version K and Version M. Version M, from what I hear, is insanely difficult and a lot of enemie's will cause your character to die in two hits. Version K is more lenient in that regard. Try Version K

    I actually ran into this game in a grocery store once a long time ago. I wasn't a fan of Castlevania much when I saw it, so I had no inclination to play it. Of course (at the time) I didn't think it was a big deal to see NES games show up as Arcade games, that was just kind of normal for me as a kit, they seemed to be everywhere, between the Vs. Systems and the Playchoice 10 units.

      Dead Account Yep, now it’s out and I used my eShop coins to get it, even though I have the collection of the franchise. But TBH, I like that the Vs. version does adds in a challenge with small time limit and slightly more damage from enemies. Also, I’m highly interested in beating high scores from other players.

    I remember player VS Castlevania at a skating rink. I could have sworn they turned the difficulty up even higher (dip switches). I'm pretty certain I remember all the enemies doing six bars of damage but that could just be poor memory.
    EDIT: I was wrong. VS Castlevania does have a hard setting: it causes the enemies to do 8 damage (half your health) 😲

    I've only seen the Castlevania arcade game once, back in 1989-90. The limited time forces you to rush through each level. Haunted Castle is just a broken mess; poor collision detection, slow and fragile player, and you have to memorize most enemy encounters if you hope to get past stage 2.

    I love castlevania. I bought it from the Nintendo Wii Store . I used to have it as a kid. Probably on my top 5 favorite games of all time on any system and in arcades. #1 SUPER MARIO BROS. #2 GTA 3 (when it was more simplistic and not ridiculously hard to complete, don't get me wrong GTA 5 is awesome but all I do is drive around, I'm not into talking on a headset listening to people arguing and whatnot. Vice city was great . I didn't like San Andreas, for some reason I felt the graphics were like PS1 graphics...yeah I'm an old school gamer I still say GRAPHICS! I'm a 39 year old guy so I was about 4 when NES 8 BIT system was released..perfect timing.
    Anyways rambling on ...sorry, not that anyone will ever even read this....
    #3. CASTLEVANIA (I never play part 2 cause it sucked!!! - 3 is ehhhhh nah #4 WWF WRESTLEFEST ARCADE GAME (greatest wrestling game ever made...better than any new WWE 2K bull. It takes like 38 button taps to do a suplex). #5 WWF NO MERCY N64. (Closest in best controls next to WRESTLEFEST). The graphics were funny cartoonish looking but the game play was so much fun....so easy. I wish whatever company made it ..was it AKI or something THQ maybe....whatever engine they used, if it was put into a Wwe 2k ps4 game , then THAT would be the greatest wrestling game ever made, because it'd have the easy controls....plus the REALISTIC graphics it has....it's really amazing but so sad about its game engine. Now that I've written this for nothing...or maybe a few people will reply and call me an a hole or this and that ...so be it. There's someone out there who understands what I mean. HAPPY RUSEV DAY!

      it isn't itd just a harder (outer hellish if you ask me ) version of the nes game
      1) the health bar is wayyyyy too feeble
      2) enemies come out of nowhere and thanks to point1) you're not gonna pass level 1
      3) checkpoints don't exist so if you die at stage 5 you're booted back to stage 5 only once! then you restart from the beginning
      4) you know how arcade games lend you help when you put a quater while playing? this game does it... for the first 32 then it ignores the rest ; it just expands your health bar up to 64 hp but due to point 1) and 2) you're not gonna be happy to see what happens

    Here's one of the earliest examples of Konami being greedy. In a time when micro-transactions and loot crates didn't exist, the only way they could make you keep paying for a game more and more was to tweak the Arcade port to be way harder or just to create an original Arcade game that's really unfair and difficult and, unlike most Arcade games, the coins just restore your health, you can still get a Game Over and be forced to start all over.
