  • Here are 5 sensory Issues HACKS that WILL work for YOU! Watch and learn from my personal experience with Autism Sensory Issues.
    1 - Noise Canceling Headphones: Use these when in noisy areas like super markets or shopping malls.
    2 - Cut Tags Off Clothes: Avoid that horrible over sensory irritation from the tags on clothes by simply cutting them off.
    3 - Weighted Blanket For Anxiety And Relaxing: Use a weighted blanket to help when you are feeling anxious, it is a great sensory toy.
    4 - Sunglasses: Use sunglasses to block shop lights as these are super triggering and can cause lots of issues when shopping.
    5 - Carry A Good Smell With You: Use like something like mints to create a good smell that you can smell if you are around a smell that can be sensory triggering.
    6 - BONUS: Avoid places that give you sensory triggers.
    Sensory issues aspergers syndrome come hand in hand, there is no surprise that sensory issues autism are a big problem for many autistic people.
    But sensory issues in autism are often diagnosed together, as Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) is very common with a diagnosis of Autism.
    I have laid out 5 /6 hacks that I use to help me better cope with life and sensory situations so that I can be more relaxed in life.
    I hope these sensory issues hacks help you or someone you know to feel more confident with sensory processing issues.

    Also my tip: I found I don’t get as sensory overwhelmed when I’m out if I carry a kinda heavy backpack everywhere. The weight keep my mind off other sensory overloads, this combine with a good headset is amazing for me.

      Same here with my heavy Uggs when I’m out. Keeping me grounded. And a heavy weighted blanket. I’ll try the backpack. Thank you for the tip.

      I carry a backpack with me, as well. Empty (for the most part) when I start out; full and heavy when I finish. I do find that the added weight makes me feel better as I walk home...and yes, listening to music on my headphones (and then just keeping them in my ear in the store, with the music turned off) helps immensely with other noises.

    What I do for sensory issues is deal with it when I start the day by having alone time by myself doing yoga and meditation, breathing exercises that calms me down then I read and pray. By doing this kinda of stuff that calms you it prepares you to be mentally ready for the day of issues.

      Yes I do that too not with rosemary but I carry always a smell I can handle or enjoy in a necklace so I smell it when there is unpleasant odor around that or I will pinch my nose.

      Chewing mint gum, breath mints, and chewing mint leaves also really helps with powerful odors! My uncle used to take me bowhunting with him and when you field dress an animal, there is a smell so he would give me mint leaves haha.

    I’m finding this now. I’m a mom of a boy in the spectrum. He is about to turn 4 and it breaks my heart when he has meltdowns when we HAVE to go certain places. Hearing you speak about it describes perfectly what he can’t say right now. So BIG thank you mister!

  • @HugeHeart13

    Putting a drop of essential oil of my preference for the day under my nose works really well to help me when in public places. Not having to smell other people’s odors or different smells from outside of my own preference is such a relief. I feel safer like I’m in control of what’s coming into my brain.

    My biggest tip is to avoid places where I will get triggered. Or if it’s a place I have to go, like the supermarket, I go right when it opens, 6 am for my local market. Shop when nobody else is there. No screaming kids. Nobody bumping his cart into yours. Brilliant.
    Instead of noise canceling headphones, I do regular headphones with podcasts I enjoy while in public. I just focus on the words in my ears harder and harder when something is bothering me.

    I always hold my breath within fifteen feet of the seafood section, that's my grocery store trigger, it's just the worst.

  • @Green_Roc
    @Green_Roc 5 лет назад +9

    I'd need those headsets for waiting rooms. It's one thing I still have to go out to, and cant get away from, and those places often trigger me, specially when ppl play videos on their phones outloud or there's kids screaming! I've had meltdowns in waiting rooms far too often when other ppl are being so obnoxious!

  • @maggierestivo5256
    @maggierestivo5256 2 года назад +3

    One of my sensory hacks is meditation. I listen to music with my headphones, and the music just takes me places. Very relaxing. I can relate to the smells in grocery stores, though for me, the biggest threat is the cleaning aisle with all the detergents and what-not. I liked your hack; believe it or not, in Medieval times, people carried a pouch with herbs in it that smelled sweet, called a "pomander". It would counter many awful smells (including the smells from their own, and others, unwashed bodies).Weighted blankets, YES! I will look into that. I wish I could wear sunglasses, but I already wear glasses, and contact lenses are now a no-go for me (due to dry eyes). Loved your talking about your son! I don't have a child, but my cats can be pretty loud. Lastly, "Yes, Dan, I would love to see a vlog!" Keep up the good work!!! You are doing so much good in the world, with this.

  • @cerridwenrowan

    I use a tissue with a couple of drops of essential oil to overcome bad smells an added advantage is that people tend to avoid you or give you more space if they think you're sick😂. I use warm water to brush my teeth and everything that is in contact with my skin is (if possible) inside out because seams irritate me as much as tags

  • @johnravely2872
    @johnravely2872 5 лет назад +4

    From the pov of someone who spent 41 years not knowing exactly what my issues were:
    Headphones- One other side benefit is I have a problem with being very approachable to strangers. Wearing headphones, even if there is no sound playing, greatly discourages unexpected conversation attempts. Those of you who use public transportation know what I'm talking about. They assume you cannot hear them, and they don't try to engage.
    Tags: You blew my mind, Dan. I never think about how I have the ability to change things, and don't realize this is an option. I also looked at my favorite, most comfortable clothes, some of which I've had for decades. No tags on them. Coincidence?
    Weighted Blanket: I've definitely found taking a brief nap helps. Big blankets for sure, as does having my small dog asleep on my chest (or cat when I had one).
    Sunglasses: had glasses since I was five, never thought sunglasses were something I could wear, so never did. Wife forced me to try prescription sunglasses a few months ago. They definitely help, although remembering to bring them, and having to switch glasses often, is a struggle. In the US, most big stores use fluorescent lights, and they not only hurt, but make colors look different, which is subtley disorienting. Sunglasses do help.
    Smells: no issues with the deli, but cleaning products and fragrance aisles kill me. Holding my breath hasn't worked well, might try this one!
    Bonus: yeah, maintain low expectations when you have to go there, and don't go places you know won't end well if you can help it. Don't be afraid of the outside world, but be smart about it.
    Also big

      I also find most over ear headphones and many in ear headphones pretty annoying/painful, but I've found some comfy ones and they help so much! I love these sleeping headphones by MaxRock : www.amazon.com/MAXROCK-Sleeping-Headphones-Earplugs-Cellphones/dp/B077NNZ3QH/
      I've never had a pair last more than 3 months(usually a button or one of the sides goes out) but they are so nice I just keep getting them. I forget they are there, which is really good. Sometimes I listen to things, but I also use them more like earplugs sometimes. They cut noise by 22 decibels which is really really nice in stores, crowds, restaurants, cars etc.

    I struggle in places where there are several conversations that are going on at once, like at a party.
    Are there any hacks to focus in on the conversation in your immediate area and tune everyone out that is not a part of that conversation?
    Is there any hack not to look like a jerk for just wanting to leave or go outside and chill out on my cell phone?

    • @johnravely2872
      @johnravely2872 5 лет назад +5

      It is always going to be hard to block out all the input. I have found that when you let most people know you want to hear them, but you're having trouble focusing, they will move closer, talk louder, or agree to move to a quieter spot. They want you to hear them, just ask. Try not to yell things like, "Sorry, what? These jerks behind us are too loud!", as you'll likely be overheard by the jerks behind you. This can be awkward. ;)
      Not always easy. Just tell lies, like you need to call someone/getting a call, have to use the restroom, or even tell the truth. "I gotta do X for a few minutes, I'll be back". You don't have to explain why. It is OK to go get some air. People will understand. Just say something quickly and go.
      (not professional advice)

    • @juxtaposition22
      @juxtaposition22 5 лет назад +6

      I also struggle focusing on the sound I want, and honestly, I've found the most acceptable solution, is honesty. I tell the person I'm talking to "I'm sorry, I'm enjoying talking to you, but I'm getting overwhelmed with all this sound, any chance you'd like to step (outside, to another room, where ever) so we can continue?" They may not want to leave the party, but I've never had someone respond as though I were being rude. I find the more honest I am, the more understanding others are.

    • @HannahRainbow88
      @HannahRainbow88 5 лет назад +1

      I lipread which helps me make more "eye" contact with a person I'm talking to as well as being able to focus more on what's said. Background noise is horrific for me - had loads of hearing tests which I've aced but struggle with processing words... It was one of the things that tipped me off that I am ASD.

    • @Shinobi_sac
      @Shinobi_sac 5 лет назад +2

      @@HannahRainbow88 I partially lip read too, not only because it helps me pick up more of what is being said, but because it shifts my focus to the direction of the person speaking to me. Otherwise I will use in-ear earphones with low(ish) volume music playing to draw my focus closer to me, rather than a wide area around me.

    My child doesn't have issues with tags, but what he and I do have issues with are others touching us. And people are so "welcoming" to helping themselves to sticking the tags back in our shirts to "help" us. It sets me off for one, and stresses out my child.

    Watching from Australia, female 63yrs I have ADHD and Complex ptsd, my son is on the spectrum and adhd. Recently I've suspected I may also be on the spectrum. It's hard to differentiate issues if they are autism traits or c ptsd/adhd symptoms. I always have to cut the tags out of my clothes. Noise!!!!! I wear noise cancelling earplugs every night to sleep and always when I go out. My dog barking!!! OMFG and he's a bad barker, he wears a citronella collar gives him a shot of citronella every time he barks ...it may work on your son...🤣 Night time I only have a lamp if any thing...I hate bright lights/outdoors etc. Just found your channel it's great. I use Decibullz attenuation filters earplugs. They dial down the noise without completely cutting off my environment. I buy as many tagless clothes as possible and am very particular about the texture of the fabric and how they fit my body. I created a weighted pillow with a faux fur cover to mimic snuggling my cat. I also have a soft cotton cover and a flannel cover for it to suit my needs. Lights don't generally bother me. It is the visual busyness of stores and the auditory stimuli of those environments that I really struggle with. My mom and my brother are the ones that do the shopping. I also don't drive because it requires me to process too many things at once while doing multiple things simultaneously, my mom is my primary chauffeur.

    Hey this is how I deal with nasty smells by breathing through my mouth not with my nose.
    Also with bright lights I cant wear sunglasses since I have glasses so I wear an hat. And when my anxiety comes in while I out of the house I switch my focus to my friends or family by talking to them having a laugh. Another thing I do is focus on the matter at hand while I name 3 things I am thankful for and why when I am by myself.

    Your bonus hack is actually helpful and very important Dan! One big example is nightclubs, which can be super triggering for a person on the autism spectrum due to loud music, crazy lights, drunken people and casual tobacco smells but even more triggering when it's overcrowded. The other night I turned down a nightclub invite 'cause it was gonna rain that night, which wouldn't allow me to get out since this nightclub has an outdoor area (I've been to this club before). Plus, because it was on a Saturday night, I was expecting it to be overcrowded so I definitely stayed in.

    the best tip is to stop forcing yourself to go to places and do things that are going to be too mentally challenging for you. Before I found out I had aspergers i’d always put pressure on myself to do those things because I thought that the anxiety would go away with habit, it didn’t. And frankly I didn’t even want to do all those things, I just wanted to fit in

    My mom got me the hearphones made by Bose and they are amazing. It allows me to control how much sound I hear and it also amplifies voices. Having ADHD and SPD I can never hear the people talking to me because I'm so distracted by everything around me. These headphones are amazing but they are $500.

    Great video! Speaking of sensory processing disorder I couldnt help but be distracted by the subtle constant feedback in the background its a high pitched oscillating sound from the mic and if you have the blue yeti its because there is to much electricity being sent to it and you need to basically unplug and replug after 10 secs to defuse the excess energy.

    First off my regular glasses are Raybans, and they're the same frame only in white and purple. Secondly, I need to try these with my son. And myself. The more I learn about autism the more I think I may have autism as well as my son.

      Ray bans are awesome!! Yes! That happens a lot with parents as autism is genetic, if you have any doubts why not take the test: ruclips.net/video/WRxrX_Suygc/видео.html ⚡️ Please subscribe to my channel to see more videos from me :).

    The earphone thing I do a lot! I have Raycon earbuds and they arnt concidered noise cancelling but they do cut out almost all outside noise when listening to music, I too used to cut off all my shirt tags when I was a kid too, flickering lights are a but triggering for me too, same with certains smells and tectures of foods, a lot of people dont understand how that can be but they dont see the world like people with aspergers do. It's cool to know I'm not the only one who finds things irritating and can find a life hack to make aspies' worlds even better and easier on a day to day basis

    I find playing with natural gemstone beads very calming when anxious, and feeling overwhelmed. I rub, roll them deep into my arms and hands like a massage, they are cooling too, as I get hot, I rub them on my face and enjoy the smooth sensation, I'm basically trying to ground myself. Using the beaded bracelets like stim toys. And I just love rocks and geology, and I'm in awe with how incredible Earths jewellery is. 💖

    For avoiding smell issues, you can dab a bit of lotion or Vicks sav under your nose. Also sometimes actually putting the peppermint in your mouth instead of just smelling it can help. Just a suggestion. I’m not autistic but I have these sensory issues. At least I’ve been told I wasn’t.

    Please do the vlog. I'm trying to teach my kids how to manage their sensory needs through the day, but it's hard as I don't have sensory issues myself. It would be really great to have a working example. Some ideas we have been given were great in theory, but not terribly practical in real life.

    I think this is quite obvious, but all sort of gadget toys can help to get rid of stressed energy or help you to better focus. There's also a lot of jewelleries and stuff that can work like sensory stimulus toys but still look stylish, such as bracelets, necklaces or rings (huge amount of them on wish). Absolutely worth trying!
