This is such a pro tip. I was thinking maybe I should just "fill up" the canister with a hose (cause priming is insane), but decided to google it instead. Hi. It depends a wee bit on what kind of filter you want and what budget you have. If it's a canister filter you're after I'm a big fan of the Oase Biomaster Thermo series. I think they do a great job and have some handy maintenance features. Many fish keepers also speak highly of the Ehiem canister filters. If budget is and issue the All Pond Solutions (or Sun Sun depending what part of the world you are in) range is a cheaper option. Some people are critical of them while others swear by them but you get what you pay for I guess. Another nice option is hang on back filters if they would suit your set up. Aqua Clear filters have a very good name. We can't get them in the UK so I use Seachem Tidals and I love them. I customise them so they work a bit more efficient but I think they are very good filters. On a four foot tank (you didn't give me the other dimensions) I think I'd consider running two Tidal 55s. I'm going to post a link for one of my playlists below where you can see several videos about a couple of the options I've listed so have a look through it and I hope that helps you decide. ruclips.net/p/PLjAgXimdeWgeduYUVdZUcYf2reYR4hUWm
I sucked on the out... and yes it did filled my canister but when I turned it on. It didn’t suck in new water for rotation... it simply doesn’t take in new water unless it’s me who’s in the end of the “out”
That's a weird one. If it drew the water in with you sucking it you would think it would do the same when you switched it on. I don't know what filter you're working with, is it new or in use. Sometimes with existing filters it helps to give them a good overhaul including cleaning out the pipes, media and the impella section to ensure everything is operating efficiently.
@@DanielKeepingFish I tried it in one of my smaller tanks.. it worked. Just had to get the air out.. I found the issue. The “in” hose wasn’t fully submerged 🙈🙈🙈🙈 so I had false air when inwas struggling it to work. But this video did help me :P nooby mistake. First time using one. I have a JBL cristalprofi 1500
@@echtwaarhe6417 haha, I was just saying to someone on another comment sometimes it's the obvious things we miss. 😂 Hey they're nice filters. Enjoy it bud.
Haha you got to suck with your mouth rather than inflate your lungs to get it going. Lots of people have found this a very helpful method to get their filter started but totally get it won't be for everyone.
I'm very new to all this scene I've to move my tank as I'm moving house but someone has told me if I switch off my filter it wont just start again when plug back in! Anyone know what the process is? I was told I'd have to blow Into the pipes or suck on them to get it going again?
It depends greatly on what filter you have but if it's a canister filter many have a primer that you can push to start the water cycling. If it isn't working then following the steps in this video should help.
I'd check all your connections and make sure it's not taking in air somewhere. Next time you think a gush might be due try tipping the canister front to back then left to right slowly and see if any air is purged.
Okay, I’ve recently upgraded to a bigger tank and will likely need to get a canister filter for it, but I was not aware that I might need to put a dirty ass filter pipe in my mouth on a regular basis to get it working!! 😷
Haha, you don't necessarily need to do it this way. It's just some people find this method a nice solution when they are struggling to get the system running or with the priming function, etc. Enjoy your new filter and big tank.
Huh... I think I might give this a go using some tubing and a vacuum priming bulb. Got one that's been rock solid at starting the vacuum. Probably could get this going without needing to drink the fishy kool-aid.
I sucked and couldn’t get it to work- it would fill up the canister but that’s it. I keep retrying and having to dump out the canister water to retry. It’s very frustrating still
my prime button decompressed and stopped working. I’ve tried this but it doesn’t seem to be working. The input starts bubbling and won’t start a siphon :/
If you're doing it like it the video you shouldn't be getting any water in your mouth at all. Everything should be empty of water; the filrer and the pipes. You only suck on the return pipe till it starts filling the canister. Once the canister fills you switch the power on and you should be good.
@@DanielKeepingFish lolol I was sucking on it trying to get it to come out of the return pipe and keep flowing. Haha I gave up and will undo everything again tomorrow and check everything is put back together correctly. Then suck on return pipe until the cannister is full hmm hmm. Thanks it doesn't taste too good either :P .
Hey. I cannot get the water to flow. Once I suck onto the output pipe the water does come out but then it does not continue to flow (stops). By now the the canister is full as well. What am I doing wrong or is the filter faulty. I must be doing something wrong as I have the same issue with a Eheim filter. Standard pipe lengths...etc. Can't believe 2 filters are faulty. PLEASE SOMEONE HELP.
Soon as the canister is full it should run fine when you turn the power on. I would check the impella, the bit that spins to draw the water through, generally in the top part of the filter. If there's nothing blocking that from spinning I would make sure everything is but together properly and sitting snugly where it ought to go. Also make sure the intake pipe is submerged. Depending how much water your filter holds sometimes it can drop the water below the intake a little but when you fill it. If it's not fully submerged it won't draw the water in.
@@DanielKeepingFish Hey Thanks. I checked the impeller but when I took it out the rubber cap on the white rod at the the impeller end (not the fan end) was not there. Could it have stayed in the housing in the pump head? I did try shaking the pump head and tipping it upside down to see if the rubber cap would drop out, but I did not notice anything fall out. Do you think it is stuck / wedged in? I can't see it as it is black and the pump head is black so it is difficult to notice at the bottom of the well. What would happen if that cap was worn not there? I will clean the impeller tomorrow and place it back in the pump head and once dry power it up and see if it spins (fingers crossed!). Can you buy these rubber caps from anywhere and are they universal? Any advice would be appreciated as currently using a small UV Pump / filter to pump a large tank. Thanks again. Amir
Hey. Thanks for your advice. I did change the impeller and the system works fine. All that bloody heartache - had I not known it was the impeller I would still be dumbfounded now. So many many thanks once again. Hats off to you. Amir

Hey they're nice filters. Enjoy it bud.
Thanks it worked !
Haha, no worries. Glad it worked for you.
after 2 days of killing myself and wanting to send my soul to hell you have saved me from it all. thank you! this works and in like 2 seconds flat!
Haha, been there many times myself.
Glad you figured it out. 👍
Amazing
Appreciate you 🙏
We are new to this, so don’t mind the stupid question, at which point so you turn the filter on?
Once you hear the water stop flowing down into the canister. You'll hear when it's full. 👍
Wow thank you so much lol
No worries. 👍
Thanks so much...
No worries bud. Guess it helped then. Glad if so. 👍
Tried this and i felt i was inhaling ammonia and starting to cough and gag. I feel like it could work but im not ready to die.
It worksssssss!
Haha... sure does. 👍
Thank you
My problem isnt priming i always get it flowing but every so often it lets a big gush out the outlet drives me insane
I'd check all your connections and make sure it's not taking in air somewhere. Next time you think a gush might be due try tipping the canister front to back then left to right slowly and see if any air is purged.
How to remove air in the filter.. My filter is not working ...
If it is running but you can hear air inside it you can tip it gently in each direction until the air is released. Hope that solves it for you.
Thanks for ur reply...
Thanks!!!!
Haha, no problem. Hope it helped.
THANKYOU because the prming button WILL NOT MOVE, I love the cannister, i HATE getting the stupid thing going
Yeah I've been there, it's pretty frustrating hey? Hopefully this helped you out then.
Omg not sure what Im doing wrong.. I setup everything and nothinggggg
Sometimes it helps to start at the beginning all over again. Actually saves time.
Hope you get it sorted.
Thanks bro
No worries. Glad if it was useful. 👍
It’s very frustrating still
It turns out I had two o rings on on the first canister compartment instead of one. Didn’t realize it was an extra. It works now, tysm!
I'm sorry I only just saw this comment. Glad you got it sorted though.
my prime button decompressed and stopped working. I’ve tried this but it doesn’t seem to be working. The input starts bubbling and won’t start a siphon :/
Sorry to hear that. Hopefully this will work for you so you can work around the problem.
Cheers neerly sent it back lol
Haha, nice save then hey. 👍
nice but i never had to pump more mine than 3 times
Eheim Classic users already knew this trick 😜
i’m sucking on the output and no water is coming from the input :/
Make sure everything is closed up and sealed properly and the intake pipe is submerged. Should be fine. 👍
all I get is a mouth full of water and nothing else :(
My Primer button is stuck down
If you're doing it like it the video you shouldn't be getting any water in your mouth at all.
Haha
I gave up and will undo everything again tomorrow and check everything is put back together correctly. Then suck on return pipe until the cannister is full hmm hmm. Thanks it doesn't taste too good either :P .
@@elmoette11 haha, no you don't want to be doing that. I've had a couple of lungfulls of fish water myself in the past. Not nice.
Amir
Idk how I feel about drinking tank water
You shouldn't be drinking any tank water at all. If you are you're no doing it right.
@@DanielKeepingFish lol I know
@@epenaloza52 haha, right. Just someone else mentioned this week this had worked for them but their dad had swallowed some water doing it. Don't want to be responsible for some mad zombie outbreak caused by injesting evil filter water. 😜
@@DanielKeepingFish well now you mention it a few hours after the incident I felt weak and had a bit of a fever, and a terrible dry cough but im sure it's just the flu right?!🤔
@@epenaloza52 hope you're feeling better now. If symptoms don't subside may well be piscine zombie disease after all.
Hope not bud. 🤞
