@@guyamber5415 Is "pure Latvian" different from American Latvian? I thought I was fluent in Latvian until I started to listen to these songs. I can understand only a few words.
@@MelbaOzzie Yes, it really is pure Latvian. Only the last part is in Latgallian dialect. Reason why can't you understand more might be with the fact they use a lot of non-basic words, like a lot of diminutives in this song. Also some words are stretched. Besides those points American Latvians tend to pronounce some words in a pre-Soviet era way which makes them sound kind of softer compared with how we speak in Latvia now, not to mention that a lot of you guys over there speak Latvian with a very notable American accent. Have you been to Latvia and spoken Latvian with locals, preferably not in Riga which is half Russian anyway? Did you understand them easily?
Hi, I do not think there is one but here is my best attempt: My mother's shoes fit me well So does my mother's headgear The time is not here yet, though To go sit in the sleigh of my husband-to-be. I shall not cut barley while there is dew, I have plenty time when the midday sun shines; I shall not marry while still young, There is plenty of time in a lifetime. Come let us sing, oh sisters, While still all under one roof; Who knows what next year brings. Where each of us shall celebrate her midsummer, Go leave, sister, when you have to, Just do not leave in springtime, It is springtime that the groom-to-be Brews his heather flower beer. I hadn't grown up For me to be out of my mind Those wanting to marry me are already as if pouring money Over my body. Come let us sing, oh sisters, While still all in one place; Who knows what next year brings. Where each of us shall celebrate her midsummer (...)
The lighting here is a real mistake. Gaudy geometrics definitely subtract from the experience. The women and musicians -- and. the music -- need only illumination, not this garish light show. (I've seen videos of other Tautumeitas performances, by the way, and they were superbly staged.)
So, in this video, they are on a flashy stage with lights and flash... instead of dancing in a field... And there are no comments saying they are filthy pagan witches that should be destroyed... Amazing. So, it is all about what is acceptable. If you have yuppie/modern trappings, then you are fine.
Dziesma par īstu māsību!! Vairāk, vairāk mums šādu sievu, meitu, māsu! Skaisti!! :)

@@JohnyJKLV Could you tell a bit more about how the common Latvian pronounciation has changed since pre-Soviet era? What used to be pronounced softer?

The problem with big expensive lightwalls is, if you don't use it to the max you're accused of wasting money. SO - Glamwall!
