Then you need a flame extender which is the kinderling like very very very dry leaves , grass and small thin sticks. Carrying cotton ball along and petroleum jelly (vaseline) helps and is an immediat fire starter.if you get lost and ran out of cotton balls you have to resort to other method which is found in nature. So to the newbies out there a ferro rod seems cool and it is . If you dont strike it correctly , you gona get sad, mad and wear out the ferro rod too quick. If you use the back of a knife make sure its a sharp 90degree spine. Practise different techniques with ferro rod and knife or the small scraper they give. If its too small whateher it may be, youre going to struggle to have proper grip. Also the ferro rod must be close and even down with its end into the fatwood shavings or dry grass so the sparks and heat is close enough for the material to ignite. Dont just pull the thing over a log making sparks that falls all over the place, looking nice but of no use.
An add, but no extra important info regarding techniques. Like scraping the ferro rod 10times with an axe is not good idea. Your dulling the axe blade and you are wasting material on ferro rod so its not gona last as long as one might need. A button compass is USELESS!!!!!!!!!! Cause a button compass mostly doesnt work. I say again from experience it doesnt work!
