You know, after rewatching this scene I realized this whole mess could have been prevented if Carl hadn't tried to bribe the cop. If he didn't he probably would have just gotten a citation for the missing tag and that would have been the end of it. On the other hand we wouldn't have much of a movie.
Wrong lol. Did you not watch the movie? The car is "stolen". They got the car from a corrupt sales manager of a car dealer so they had no Vehicle Licence. Without this they would have anyways get told to step out of the car and would tow it away. You can't drive around without your papers, so he tried to bribe him.
The Coen brothers make some of the best films you'll ever watch. One thing i always liked about their pictures, is the set designs and wardrobes. They really go all out to make sure all of the shots are period correct. It has to be a ton of work to get all the vehicles on the road, as well as the interiors of the various bars, motels, houses, etc. to look like they would if you saw them during the time the story was intended to take place. If you really take the time to look at all the little details in their movies, you can see that they put a lot of effort into that type of thing. I can't imagine being tasked with making every scene fit perfectly to the time frame of the story. I feel like that attention to detail is one of the things that separate a good film from a masterpiece.
Almost all movies nowadays, and absolutely ss well in the 90's, have a set designer or set director that is in charge of doing exactly this for the film. It isn't just a Coen Brothers thing
I've come to really appreciate any film that can make me feel as though I'm really there in the period the film is based in. Cars, clothes and locations, to me, have always been a surface layer for a particular time in film. What really sells it, for me, is the little details. How people speak, music of the time either in the background or more pronounced, election signs if it was an election year, sayings, TV, etc. Other examples of films I feel absolutely nail their time periods: Goodfellas, Mississippi Burning, The Ten Commandments and Titanic to name a few.
The Coens made a mistake in No Country for Old Men. That movie is set in 1980, as mentioned by Anton during the gas station scene when he says his quarter has the year 1958 on it and has been traveling around for 22 years. In that same scene, you can look behind Anton's left shoulder and see Jack Link's Beef Jerky on a rack. This is wrong as Jack Link's did not offer beef jerky until the mid-1980's.
Whats brillant about this character is all the little things he does or doesnt do that . A lot of impressive stuff in this scene. The situation between the two is already tense, but the officer makes things so much worse. The divide between the two characters' personality is put to the test and their relationship completely fails in this moment. What is more, is that the Officer is deliberately given a very impressive and intimidating feel. He is all business, and he overshadows Carl. He literally looks down on Carl instead of being friendly toward him, on his level. He represents the authority of justice and the law, and in a lot of ways, how powerless it really is to protect people in the face of objective evil such as Gaear.

I found that if just right then you figure, and somehow convince yourself, that it's all over or the jig is up, at that moment a certain calm will come over you. (believing a worst-case scenario). It takes a surprising bit of skill to do this. This is hard to explain. In my long life I have pulled through some real squeakers!! (not murder or kidnaping like this scene though!!). Just a few months after his arrest, Gaer escaped prison, fled to Russia and snuck himself on a space shuttle traveling to the ISS. After a year in space on the ISS, Bruce Wilis paid him a visit and asked him to help blow up an asteroid. The rest is history.
Trying to bribe a cop after getting pulled over for dealer plates... ya not suspicious at all lol... honestly without the bribe he probably would've just reminded them to put on the temp tags and let them go lol
@@newjeffersonian6456 ya true but she didn't start making noise until after the top was already getting suspicious... Cuz Buscemi just tried to bribe him for an extremely minor issue. May as well put a sign on their car saying "yes we definitely have something to hide officer!" Lol
I live in Minnesota, new cars have to display dealer's license plates or have a temporary one taped to the back of the vehicle, as the officer stated, but the whole scene is about the attempted bribery
I think a thing you guys aren't really getting the point of the bribe. In that situation the bribe was all they could do. Even if he hadn't bribed the officer and thus alerted him that something fishy was up they were still cornered. The cop wasn't just going to just "let them go" because they were nice and cooperative. They needed temporary tags so they would've had to get towed or maybe if he was nice enough the cop could've guided them to a place that could help. But regardless along the way someone would've found out that they were in a stolen car with a kidnapped woman in the trunk. The bribe attempt was just a last ditch effort to avoid something more bloody and drastic.
Gaar Grimsrud seems to be blaming Carl Showalter for his bullet making them every cop’s worst nightmare... “you’ll take care of it...”, he says... Keep your gun in that lighted glove box, and quickly light up again, Gaar... - \ : D /

Damn that was brutal O_O
Vegeta solo, it made me feel bad for the cop
Put. That. Back.
In your pocket pleasssssse.
1:27 Till Lindemann? JAJAJA
They look like an inflated Ryan Gosling and a deflated Bill Skarsgaard.
And you’re unfilmable
No way the officer noticed the tags missing from that far away at night lol
Beast mode
I like society and I like states and countries and I am so sorry for the trooper that there was a mental person in the right seat, So sad.
The albino man is icecold
Just a few months after his arrest, Gaer escaped prison, fled to Russia and snuck himself on a space shuttle traveling to the ISS. After a year in space on the ISS, Bruce Wilis paid him a visit and asked him to help blow up an asteroid. The rest is history.
they used MIR not ISS as fuel depot :D
Yes, and then killed and while in hell, came back to earth to collect Keanu Reeves' soul.
You can say it's not total truth by the fact russia never launched space shuttles
Before that he survived getting eaten by compys.
Trying to bribe a cop after getting pulled over for dealer plates... ya not suspicious at all lol... honestly without the bribe he probably would've just reminded them to put on the temp tags and let them go lol
With a groaning woman covered up in the back seat? Don't think so.
@@newjeffersonian6456 ya true but she didn't start making noise until after the top was already getting suspicious... Cuz Buscemi just tried to bribe him for an extremely minor issue. May as well put a sign on their car saying "yes we definitely have something to hide officer!" Lol
what was wrong with his license?
he was bribing the cop, theres a 50 poking out for him
He didn't have the vehicle registration. That's why he had the $50 bill.
HE'S GOT NO PLATES ON THE CAR
LOL I saw your comment on "Governor's soundtrack -Walking Dead" Donald Trump campaign song
Why didn't he just put the temporary dealer plates on?
I think, but im drunk, the best part is that gaear is scared shitless.
As the cop approaches his gun is on his left side. In the next scene it’s on his right. Not sure how they got that mixed up...
It's called a mirror
@@RedAce93 oh...
Yeah, it was a mix-up I guess.
Why don't you ask those three people up in Brainerd if a deal is a deal?
Meine dispatcher says there is something wrong with deine cable?
don't be fatuous, batty
