Old video but it looks a lot like the front diff that Honda use. It will act like a diff brake if there is big difference in torque going to one of the front wheels. At least that is how the Honda front diff work.
Hey! Looks like I've got virtually the same identical unit in my '96 Bearcat 454. How did you open it up?! I've managed to get the axle cups off of the splines and open up the case, but I'm left with this, what looks like a closed and sealed unit. I've got access to many machining tools, so not much is impossible. I've scoured youtube and can't seen to find any videos of anything. Looking to weld the inside of it to lock it. Thanks
The two halves of the center unit are threaded. They are screwed together than they weld the seam so it is permanent. If you can machine the weld down you should be able to unscrew the two halves.
I guess it's those needle bearings that seized up in mine causing it to act like a full on locker. I see AC 300 front diffs on eBay regularly and I think I'll do like you did and just swap my 500's 3.6 ratio ring and pinion into the 300 case and be done with it and have the best of three worlds...2wd 3wd and 4wd diff lock.

+leemer1 I think you will need to modify the cable also so that it will move enough to engage all 3 settings.
+Boyd mine has the push pull lever on the left fender.
+leemer1 I know the cable on the 300 did not allow the full range of motion. It had to be modified. Yours is probably the same design.
